EgyptAir to cease flights between Cairo and Japan

EgyptAir to cease flights between Cairo and Japan | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

Egypt's national airline says it will cease operating flights to Japan until further notice due to major economic losses and lack of support from both governments.

(...) The company said that several of its routes have become an economic burden, especially flights to the Japanese cities of Tokyo and Osaka.

EgyptAir has operated flights to Japan for some 50 years, halting the traffic after the 2011 revolt that toppled longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak, but resuming the flights five months ago.

EgyptAir reviews in-flight movies after Islamist complaint -

EgyptAir reviews in-flight movies after Islamist complaint - | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it
Egypt-actus's insight:

(Reuters) - Egypt's national airline said on Thursday it will analyse its onboard movies to make sure they respect "Egyptian values and customs", following a complaint by a Muslim Brotherhood member who took offence at a film screened during one of its flights.

EgyptAir said the film had been turned off at the request of Ahmed Fahmy, the speaker of Egypt's upper house of parliament and a leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party. In a statement, EgyptAir said he had "expressed reservations about one of the scenes" in the movie.

The statement did not name the film, but local media identified it as "Arees Mama", or "Mother's Suitor", a decades-old movie starring the Egyptian actress Nelly. Al-Masry Al-Youm, a newspaper, said Fahmy had taken offence at scenes of intimacy.

Fahmy could not immediately be reached for comment.

The case is likely to fuel concerns about the extent to which the Muslim Brotherhood, which propelled President Mohamed Mursi to power in an election last year, could use its new position of power to curb freedom of expression.

Egypt Air losses since uprising amount to 6 bln pounds

Egypt Air losses since uprising amount to 6 bln pounds | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it
Egypt-actus's insight:

Egypt Air losses since the January 2011 uprising amount to six billion Egyptian pounds, 650 million of which are attributed to the upsurge of the U.S. dollar price, an Egyptian minister said.

Political unrest following the Egyptian uprising led to exhausting the resources of foreign reserves which the country's central bank said were down to 13.6 billion dollars by the end of last January.

The civil aviation ministry formed a committee headed by the chairman of Egypt Air’s holding company to handle the losses.

Vice president of the Central Bank of Egypt and two American University in Cairo professors are members of the committee which has been working for a month now, the Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported.

The losses of the airline company are serious but not disastrous and will not lead to shutting down the company or selling it, Civil Aviation Minister Wael al-Ma'adawi said.

32 thousand employees are working at Egypt Air when only 12 thousand are needed to run the company, the minister said.

Egypt's social circumstances make it difficult to get rid of the excess 20 thousand employees, he added.

Tourism, one of Egypt's main income sources, slowed down after the Muslim Brotherhood won in the first presidential elections after the revolution, the new constitution had been approved, and the Islamists dominated the parliament.
