Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice President of the Commission, visits Egypt on Sunday,7 April.

Her trip forms part of the European Union's ongoing efforts to support the democratic and economic transition in Egypt. During her visit, she will meet President Mohamed Morsi and leading opposition figures, including Amr Moussa, Mohamed El Baradei, Hamdeen Sabahy, Ahmed Said,

Mohamed Abou el-Ghar and Said Badawi.

Ahead of her visit, Catherine Ashton said:

"This is a critical time for Egypt's transition. The country

is facing huge economic and political challenges. More than ever, Europe - as a partner and neighbour - has to support Egypt in its move towards deep and inclusive democracy. I will work hard in Cairo to engage with all parties to help build confidence and find common ground on both political and economic issues."

The Ministry of Foreign affairs has announced that it hosted “political consultations on planning policies and relations between Egypt and the European Union”.

Heading the Egyptian delegation for Thursday’s meeting was Assistant Foreign Minister for European Affairs and Security and Strategic Organisations Affairs Hatem Seif El Nasr. Deputy Secretary General for the External Action Service Helga Schmid headed the EU delegation.

According to a statement from the ministry, the two sides discussed “issues related to developments in the Arab Spring countries… the Palestinian issue and the responsibility of the entire international community to act pragmatically towards ending Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories”.

The consultations also dealt with wider regional issues such as the Syrian crisis and the Nile Basin Initiative, on which the Egyptian side presented its view. They also discussed “a number of African issues of common interest, mainly the situation in Sudan, Somalia, Mali and efforts to combat piracy in the Horn of Africa”. (...)

 

 

The ministry’s statement reported that El Nasr said that the consultations are “part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ keenness to develop Egyptian relations with the EU as it is a prominent force in the international arena and has been increasingly influential on both an economic and political level”.

EU High Representative Catherine Ashton said on Saturday that she is concerned at reports of renewed violence in Cairo and at the general climate of increased domestic instability in Egypt.

According to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), in a statement by Ashton's spokesperson, the High Representative called on all parties to “enter into a broad-based and inclusive dialogue to overcome the current political stalemate and the serious political divide.”

The Egyptian Chamber of Commerce in Alexandria on Monday 18/2/2013 started the practical steps for starting the technical aid program provided by the European Union (EU) to start implementing five new regional projects in Alexandria, mainly in the fields of sustainable tourism, food production, solar energy, waste recycling at an aggregate budget of L.E. 180 million, to which the EU would contribute 90%.

The remaining 10% will be provided by the Arab Academy for Science and Technology, the Federation of European Chambers, the Arab-German Chamber of Commerce.

The three-year program provides for exchanging expertise with the Euro Mediterranean chambers and the specialized authorities.

The first project covers developing tourist and historical heritage as well as enhancing cooperation in the field of tourism, said Ahmed Al-Wakil, Chairman of the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce and Head of Alexandrian Chamber.

 

He added that the second venture relates to the development of solar energy technology, while the third covers boosting food industries as well as the development of exports, he added.

 

The fourth project covers developing the societal participation in solid waste treatment through the schools and universities, while the fifth project covers developing supply chains in dairy sector, its production and the exports of its traditional industries, said Al-Wakil
