A blog about education, e-learning (e-everything, really), entertainment, eats, eastcoast-meets-westcoast and of course, erin. But not about earwigs or expressways. I have nothing to say about them.
"Abstract Recognition in education is the acknowledgment of learning achievements. Accreditation is certification of such recognition by an institution, an organization, a government, a community, etc. There are a number of assessment methods by which learning can be evaluated (exam, practicum, etc.) for the purpose of recognition and accreditation, and there are a number of different purposes for the accreditation itself (i.e., job, social recognition, membership in a group, etc). As our world moves from an industrial to a knowledge society, new skills are needed. Social web technologies offer opportunities for learning, which build these skills and allow new ways to assess them. This paper makes the case for a peer-based method of assessment and recognition as a feasible option for accreditation purposes. The peer-based method would leverage online communities and tools, for example digital portfolios, digital trails, and aggregations of individual opinions and ratings into a reliable assessment of quality. Recognition by peers can have a similar function as formal accreditation, and pathways to turn peer recognition into formal credits are outlined. The authors conclude by presenting an open education assessment and accreditation scenario, which draws upon the attributes of open source software communities: trust, relevance, scalability, and transparency. Keywords: Open education; assessment; accreditation; participatory learning"

If you’re implementing eLearning and ICT in Higher Education or Vocational Education and Training, then we’re sure you’ll agree that ensuring quality is a major priority! SEVAQ+ is a European-wide initiative for the Self-evaluation of quality in technology-enhanced learning, based on an innovative combination of the Kirkpatrick evaluation model for learning and the EFQM excellence model. SEVAQ+ enables you to engage in a 360° analysis of feedback from the major stakeholders involved in technology-enhanced learning systems and: • pinpoint areas for improvement, • track progress from one semester or year to the next, • benchmark your teaching and training against other institutions.Learn more about the SEVAQ+ team, the project’s background, and get involved by participating in our online communities or joining one of our webinars!

Justin van Fleet argues that corporations must come together under the united banner of a Global Business Coalition for Education to address the global learning crisis in the developing countries.
At the close of my last post, I promised this next would be less critical and more constructive. So that's what I'm working toward. As I view it, thie badges/assessment thing tries to address four separate issues that really need...
By sleeping before I blogged, I've gotten way behind on the whole badges thing. Here are some belated first thoughts. The Good Badges recognize that meaningful learning can happen in units...

"What is Mozilla's Open Badges project? Learning today happens everywhere, not just in the classroom. But it's often difficult to get recognition for skills and achievements that happen outside of school. Mozilla's Open Badges project is working to solve that problem, making it easy for anyone to issue, earn and display badges across the web -- through a shared infrastructure that's free and open to all. The result: helping learners everywhere display 21st century skills, unlock career and educational opportunities, and level up in their life and work. Learn more."
Learning for everyone, by everyone, about almost anything.

From 14 – 16 September 2011 the annual EFQUEL conference took place in Oeiras near Lisbon, Portugal. Like in 2010, Maike Schansker from the SCIENTIA section of UNU-ViE used her graphic recording skills to capture the essence of keynote speeches and workshops. Not only pen and paper were used to capture insights from this years conference, though. Equipped with a flipcam and portable audio devices, Dr. Virginie Aimard and Chahira Nouira captured participants' impressions and thoughts in video and audio interviews. Find further - posts @UNU_SCIENTIA about the conference on twitter (#EIF2011) - posts on the section's blog: www.vie.unu.edu/learninghub/
