Learn why it is important to stretch your brain, to try new things (and to fail) and to continue to try and improve. Learn about our "Lizard Brain"  (also known as the amygdala),an important component of our brain that impacts how we learn, but the learning is related to the time when humans hunted in the wild. This part of the brain holds us back in many ways, and although it once protected us now it tends to hold us back.

What can we do about this? The video explores this and discusses some of the ways we can "dance" with this "Lizard Brain" and move from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. For more information take the time to watch this video.

Jackie Gerstein reviews the skills identified by Tony Wagner as well as six additional skills and attributes she believes learners need today.  She then looks at a recent Gallup Poll that looks at Americans expectations of schools today. Quoting from the post:

"While student success may depend on mastery of content in core subject areas such as math and reading, it also depends on more than knowledge of core content. Critical thinking, creativity, communication, and other soft skills, as well as student physical and social wellbeing, are also necessary for future success in higher education and in the workplace. Americans Say U.S. Schools Should Teach “Soft” Skills"

The post continues and explores how the other 21st century skills may be classified as social-emotional skills and how the growth of these skills may positively impact students in other areas. As always Gerstein has provided a post that pushes boundaries and provides a variety of resources.

If we want our students to become critical thinkers they need to be able to ask questions. Rather than accepting the answer "I don't know" have the student think a bit more and come up with a better question. >>  Contributor: through empathy and understanding; making a difference to the surrounding world

>> Creator: being an innovator, designer and maker of new things

>> Communicator: with compassion through oral, written, visual, musical, non-verbal and dance.

>> Collaborator: team member, leading and negotiating, sharing

>> Explorer: showing curiosity, taking risks and experimenting

>> Thinker: creative, critical, analytical, broad minded

 

They came up with the 3 Big Ideas last year. For one week three times during the year, there are themes where learners self-direct their learning.
