Ivy League’s meritocracy lie: How Harvard and Yale cook the books for the 1 percent

Ivy League’s meritocracy lie: How Harvard and Yale cook the books for the 1 percent | EFL School Owners and Managers | Scoop.it
Meaningful participation in a democratic society depends upon citizens who are willing to develop and utilize these three skills: collaborative problem solving, independent thinking, and creative leadership. But these skills bear no relationship to success in the testocracy. Aptitude tests do not predict leadership, emotional intelligence, or the capacity to work with others to contribute to society. Rainbow Bridges EFL Materials's insight:

A comprehensive damnation of the SAT and reliance on multiple-choice exams. Scores show low correlation with first-year scholastic performance, but high correlation with family income and money spent on education.

Teacher: I see the difference in educational privilege every day. I live it. I am disgusted by it. | EFL School Owners and Managers | Scoop.it
'Almost every day, I slip food to one of my students. Both of his parents are in prison. Or, one of his parents is in prison and the other is dead. We can’t quite get the full story from him....Where there is money, there is education. Where there isn’t money, there is excessive testing, lack of curricular options, and struggle.'
Rainbow Bridges EFL Materials's insight:

Teacher: I see the difference in educational privilege every day. I live it. I am disgusted by it.

I am angry that when I attend a conference for gifted children—which, make no mistake, I do have in my classroom, though they do not have the same opportunities as their more affluent counterparts—I see such a stark difference between the opportunities afforded to students in affluent areas, and the opportunities afforded to students in my classroom.

Where there is money, there is education. Where there isn’t money, there is excessive testing, lack of curricular options, and struggle.
