Postcolonial and Postimperial Literature: An Overview | ELT

Postcolonial and Postimperial Literature: An Overview | ELT | EFL-ESL, ELT, Education | Language - Learning - Teaching - Educating | Scoop.it
Monica Mirza's insight:

Onlist S. Bonfils (a colleague) has just reminded us of "Things fall apart" as its Nigerian author -Chinua Achebe- has died (the novel's considered the archetype of the African novel in English) .

Should you plan to deal with the novel, its author and/or dwell in the African literature domain... let me suggest you ' www.postcolonialweb.org ', a website I discovered a while ago. It covers"Contemporary postcolonial and postimperial literature in English" and contains loads of relevant analyses and information to help you study them with your students.

Hope it'll be of some use :-)

Many things that are commonplace activities for adults — driving, voting, and paying taxes, for example — are not appropriate for children.

5 False Prophets in language teaching

5 False Prophets in language teaching | EFL-ESL, ELT, Education | Language - Learning - Teaching - Educating | Scoop.it

"Learning a language is a very personal endeavor. Each individual uses different ways to reach the same result: being able to communicate in a foreign language. [...] The problem starts when a teacher or teaching product lifts one of these approaches on a pedestal and tries to sell it as the “one and only” way. [...] For one person, immersion might be the way to go, for another one formal grammar study might be the best. In the end, however, each and everyone has to decide for themselves what works and what doesn’t. This article is just a little reminder that you shouldn’t take anyone’s word for it."

Monica Mirza's insight:

Smart drawings that tell it all  -love the "100% immersion" one :-)

Changing Education Paradigms (Ken ROBINSON | ANIMATION

Monica Mirza's insight:

In the excerpt from Sir Ken Robinson's TED talk I blogged there :  http://0z.fr/NJZg7 last year, he asked whether schools kill creativity and suggested a few bright answers...

It was issued in the site Teachers' Lounge for it's likely to interest colleagues, but I think it might also be of some interest to students. Besides, Ken Robinson's speech is so articulate and clear that it'll have the students feel as good at understanding a native speker... as I did myself :-D

The animation above corresponds to another of his talks. It deals with changing education paradigms and is quite shorter : hope you'll enjoy it !

Stanford Study Shows How Humor Activates Child’s Brain | CBS San Francisco | EFL-ESL, ELT, Education | Language - Learning - Teaching - Educating | Scoop.it
For the very first time, Stanford researchers have begun to understand specifically how humor activates different areas in a child’s brain.
Monica Mirza's insight:

The article is likely to suit French High Schools SMS sections, B1-B2 and above levels, but it may be used in other classes too..

It also includes an interesting video (02'48") that may train students to oral/viewing comprehension.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Humour makes an acceptable manner of putting oneself in the clear : teachers may well "use" it to provide students an honourable way of finding a way out of stressful situations, esp. contentious ones... before the whole class. But of course, it mustn't be confused with sarcasm, or irony  -for fear it might hurt or humiliate, then.

Technology is Changing how Students learn, Teachers say | NYTimes

Technology is Changing how Students learn, Teachers say | NYTimes | EFL-ESL, ELT, Education | Language - Learning - Teaching - Educating | Scoop.it

“I’m an entertainer. I have to do a song and dance to capture their attention,” said Hope Molina-Porter, 37, an English teacher at Troy High School in Fullerton, Calif., who has taught for 14 years. She teaches accelerated students, but has noted a marked decline in the depth and analysis of their written work.

She said she did not want to shrink from the challenge of engaging them, nor did other teachers interviewed, but she also worried that technology was causing a deeper shift in how students learned. She also wondered if teachers were adding to the problem by adjusting their lessons to accommodate shorter attention spans.

“Are we contributing to this?” Ms. Molina-Porter said.

This myth seems to get spread around by the media every year around Super Bowl time, as well as by fans themselves. This would be particularly remarkable considering only about one out of every seven people on the planet have access to the Super Bowl broadcast [...]"

"There seems to be a perception that online gaming has a detrimental impact on children’s development. Nothing could be further from the truth, and there are countless–and complex–reasons for this, but it also makes sense at the basic benefits of game-based learning. [...] education and online gaming certainly aren’t enemies [and ...] playing online games may be something which can enhance a child’s learning and development."
