Designing for Services Beyond the Screen

Designing for Services Beyond the Screen | Effective UX Design | Scoop.it
You redesign the website for an airline, but who is designing the check-in machines, the CRM systems used by call center staff, the print materials, or the policies the cabin crew must adhere to?
Terry Patterson's insight:

UX design is an integrated process where the design answers the needs of the customer and provides elements of ease and delight. For application design, usable screens are a necessity, but the awareness of the entire user experience is paramount.

Hans's curator insight, June 30, 2013 9:10 AM

I agree, an awareness of the entire user experience is essential today, and that is more than than just content on a screen. People interact with technology in a variety of contexts which lead to a complex relation of touchpoints. We are connected to the web in eco systems of products and services that must be coherent in order to not make us drown in digital shit. I mean, designers have the holistic responsibiliy to handle all opportunities that lie before us and make sure that technology will actually make life easier to live - not the opposite.

Are You Sure Everybody Scrolls? | 352 Blog | Effective UX Design | Scoop.it
User tests like those from Huge might suggest that everyone scrolls no matter what, but you need end-user data to confirm design hypotheses.
Terry Patterson's insight:

This is a topic of interest for a long, long time. It's true, different camps and opinions about it has made me flip back and forth from one camp to another. It depends though, and this article describes the reasons why we should give a lot of consideration to the design cues and the hierarchy of information in a site. Good read. Highly recommended for your sanity and to suggest a specific approach based on the content you're working with.

Terry Patterson's insight:

I like articles that have a lot of "truth" in them. This is one of those articles. It is amazing how much the design process has changed from the time I started designing. It does take a lot more than intuition and graphic talent to put a digital product out there today.

Qantas suffers Apple Watch fail: it doesn't fit in the airline's scanners | Effective UX Design | Scoop.it
Scanners at Australian airports' boarding gates are too small for a wrist wearing an Apple Watch to get inside.
Terry Patterson's insight:

I found this article very insightful because it reminds us to test "outside the lab" and "in the real-world". Watching real interactions exposes issues that we may not think about during the design process.

No More Pogo Sticking: Protect Users from Wasted Clicks | Effective UX Design | Scoop.it
Misleading links and omitted information force users to bounce back and forth in a hub-and-spoke pattern, between a routing page and subpages linked from it.
Terry Patterson's insight:

This was a great read! Pay attention to your web analytics, it's not about increasing clicks, it's about increasing engagement and meeting the customers' needs.

What a Prototype Is (and Is Not)

What a Prototype Is (and Is Not) | Effective UX Design | Scoop.it

The main purpose of building prototypes is to test whether or not the flow of the product is smooth and consistent.

Terry Patterson's insight:

I have used mockups and prototypes with varying degrees of fidelity for as long as I can remember while working in this field. Some ideas are so simple that rapid prototypes taking straight to code approaches make sense. There are those times when we are still trying new approaches and flows for users and the thing needs to be tested. Either way, our tools must allow us to do this quickly and effectively. The type of prototype impacts your testing and can skew your results if you're not a methodical UX researcher focusing on the right staging.

A Common Design Taxonomy | UX Magazine

A Common Design Taxonomy | UX Magazine | Effective UX Design | Scoop.it
Terry Patterson's insight:

I read this article with a little bit of suspicion. There is a dissonance sometimes in the world of design that sometimes is just meant to be aimed at adhering to principles over preoccupied by aesthetics. Then, there is the design camp overly preoccupied by user experience and functionality. This article is recommended because, in my opinion, closes the loop and brings designers back to taking into consideration the ultimate design goal of a product. That, my designer friends, gets well overlooked and it is misunderstood and misinterpreted many times.
