I don't believe this style is a trend or a revolution. I think this style, as other styles, serves a purpose for an audience wanting simplicity and straight forward functions over graphic embellishments or bells and whistles. In fact, in the early days of web design, sites where just as simple, perhaps not as pretty though because we didn’t have the choices of colors, gradients and rounded corners that we have now (thank you CSS). It is actually a style after my own designer heart; I love the minimalist design that complements function and minimizes distraction. Of course, one needs to be careful of being too drab or not engaging enough for the audience. Injecting surprising elements perhaps for “delight”.
