50 Reasons Why Online Learning Deserves Respect - InformED #MOOC | Effective School Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

"Online learning is on the rise. According to a 2013 report by the Babson Survey Research Group, over 6.7 million postsecondary students were enrolled in at least one online class in 2011, compared to only 1.6 million in 2002, and 62 percent of the schools surveyed now award degrees entirely through distance education."

How to Use YouTube Annotations [VIDEO] | Effective School Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
There is no one way to incorporate annotations into your videos. The best way is to test out different annotations, and adjust them as you see necessary. Also, do not add an annotation to a video and forget about it.

In this article I will focus specifically on annotations, interactive elements that can be added to your video after it is uploaded. At this time, there are six types of annotations that you can add to your videos.

Karen Dietz's curator insight, July 28, 2013 10:18 PM

A few articles ago I curated the piece on the research between storytelling and storydoing companies. http://www.scoop.it/t/just-story-it?q=storydoers

As I said in my review, I applaud the endeavor to quantify storytelling, and the results shown are promising. But some of the assumptions are troubling and I end up having more questions than applause. Some of the comments in the discussion thread in the online article by Ty Montague are interesting too. Some make valid points. Some raise my eyebrows.

In any event, my friend and business story colleague Ashraf Ramzey in the Netherlands chimes in with his opinion in his recent blog post. He is hot under the collar like I get sometimes :) Ashraf is brilliant, knows his stuff, is well trained in storytelling, and he isn't just blowing smoke.

For Ashraf, the research is just another expression of the hype around storytelling these days. And he puts in a better context some of the thinking these days about business storytelling and marketing/branding.

Many thanks Ashraf for weighing in. And I hope my readers are getting the sense that there are many sides to business storytelling. The clearer we are about the approaches, methodologies, terms, etc. that we are using, the better of we will be.

This review was written by Karen Dietz for her curated content on business storytelling at www.scoop.it/t/just-story-it

I love this blog. I would call it authenticity. I agree most stories are made up, make believe and even worse the companies believe these stories themselves. I agree fully that's not story telling that is Adevertising.

Karen Dietz's comment, July 30, 2013 10:10 PM
Glad it struck a chord Hans! Yes, it's not storytelling but advertising.

A cool little tool that easily makes a picture using your quote (either your own or someone else's). There are background templates (though not very many) to choose from. You only have to type the quote, click on Create and...voilà, you have an image which you can insert in your presentation to add a nice touch.

Above you can see an example made by me.

"Eventually, MOOCs will evolve beyond the delivery of online courses to becoming a pervasive resource where open access to cutting-edge university research (as well as teaching) will play a pivotal role in guiding the decisions of individuals in matters that affect their lives the most."  This is the ideal objective.  As the commenter said at the end of the article, the low penetration of Internet, language constraint, local knowledge, etc. are all barriers at present.

Christopher Gurrie: In 2008, a colleague and I set out to make it our mission to rid this world of bad PowerPoint presentations. Remember the consequences: every time you make a bad PowerPoint presentation -- God (all of them) kills a kitten.

Even if we can only influence one student at a time -- hopefully we are doing our part to make presentation land just a little bit better for our fellow audience members. After all, we're only on this Earth for a short while -- it shouldn't be spent sitting through boring presentations where the presenter reads to us from slides laden with too many words and not enough practice...

This can be used on readers on many different level

Shelby Porter's comment, September 30, 2013 11:19 AM
I feel the skill of reading a map is very important, but it becoming less prevalent in classrooms. Teachers may find it more difficult to teach and therefore are not going in depth with it. I remember as a child in grade school we would color maps or have to find where the states are. We never were taught how to fully understand the uses of a map and all the different ways they are used and how to read them. It is becoming a lost skill in a world that needs to be more appreciative of geography.
