Trish Sadar's insight:

Nice article to demonstrate an example of an effective, targeted resume.

The summary is targeted to the position and industry, the qualifications are targeted to the particular job based on the candidate's strengths.

Each position has a small description of what the person is responsible for, and Most importantly following that bullets that show case the results in action verbs of what the candidate accomplished in each position.

Remember most recruiters look at resumes for seconds.  The first page needs to tell us that you can do the job, you have the requirements and competencies we are seeking, and the results you achieved.

Melanie Mortensen's curator insight, December 11, 2012 5:49 PM

Going to a great school is helpful but if you dont know how to make up a proper resume finding a job in Software Engineering is going to be difficult. That is why I found this link useful. Not all jobs require the same format so this link is a great example of a proper resume for a Software Engineer. With this economy to land a job its important to have a good college background and resume.

Trish Sadar's insight:

Excellent article that is applicable to all industries!

Targeted summary is very important; however, a targeted resume is even more important.

Some technology professionals put everything on their resume.  It is important to showcase the job experience, projects, technology that is important for the job you are applying for.

Regarding the action verbs....I agree 100%.  When I read resumes I don't just want to know what you were responsible for -- I want to know what you accomplished in the role.

Did you increase productivity from ___ to ___

Did you improve ___ usage from ___ to ___

Did you streamline processes to...

Emerging Resume Trends – QR Codes and company logos | Tandem Resumes | Effective Resumes | Scoop.it

I have the opportunity to review a lot of resumes, so I have a front seat to emerging trends. Two increasingly popular approaches are to include Quick Response (QR) Codes and company logos on resumes.

Trish Sadar's insight:

This is definitely a must read for those of you who are integrating technology into your resume package.

Keeping the end user in mind is such an important tip.  I always suggest for individuals to insert the url of their past employer's on their resume so that the recruiter can quickly look at the company.

if they wish to. (Example below)

Melia Hotels International

http://www.melia.com/hotels/home.htm

The QR codes are useful for students who may want to show case concise and organized examples of portfolios.

Confessions of a College Counselor: Resume Tips for Students and Recent Graduates

Confessions of a College Counselor: Resume Tips for Students and Recent Graduates | Effective Resumes | Scoop.it

Solid resume tips for students and recent grads: http://t.co/j0q2rb8q...

Trish Sadar's insight:

Good article!  I agree that so many students still don't know who to listen to when it comes to their resume.

When students come to me and say Professor Sadar what am I doing wrong, I have sent so many resumes and I am not getting a call back.

Resumes should not be generic and one page.  Remember, the job of your resume is to land you the interview.  A great first step in accomplishing this is having this as your goal.  Next, ask yourself is my resume targeted to the job I am applying for?  Will my resume differentiate me from the hundreds of other applicants?  Within a few seconds will the recruiter see that I have the experience and I am a right fit for the position?

Resume Writing Tips: Five Resume Trends to Avoid

Resume Writing Tips: Five Resume Trends to Avoid | Effective Resumes | Scoop.it
There's been much talk lately about the arrival of the fully paperless office and
the entirely digital job search. Speculative technophiles and futuristic lovers
of all things internet are trumpeting the same message: The resume is dead!

Via DiversityLeaders
Trish Sadar's insight:

This article is a must read for those who believe that resumes are no longer required.

While most large global organizations do have their online application process, which has questions that require targeted answers.  When you do sit in front of the recruiter or hiring manager they will still ask to see your printed resume.

Having presence online is great; however, many HR departments do not have the luxury of time to search for you.  Many still depend on you finding them.

I always suggest a multi-pronged approach.  Every organization is different, and you never know what might get you in the eyes of the recruiter to land you the interview.
