How Technology Is Changing the Way People Learn

How Technology Is Changing the Way People Learn | Effectieve leerstrategien voor de toekomst | Scoop.it
We can make all sorts of assumptions about the way technology is changing learning, but what does the science actually say? According to Alfred Spector, Google’s vice president of research, it says a lot. For example, virtual tutors have helped average students reach the top 2% of their course; video games provide immersive environments that take the bordedom out of studying; and social networks are being used to increase interaction between students.

Schools Need to Include More Visual-Based Learning

Schools Need to Include More Visual-Based Learning | Effectieve leerstrategien voor de toekomst | Scoop.it
When asked what my first language is, I often answer, “visual.” I think in images, prefer to be taught through images, and like to express what I know through images. I find it disconcerting that as learners progress to the higher grades, there is less use of images and visuals to teach concepts.

Gamifying Your Class to Meet the Needs of All Learners

Gamifying Your Class to Meet the Needs of All Learners | Effectieve leerstrategien voor de toekomst | Scoop.it
Gamifying a lesson or longer learning experience provides powerful differentiation opportunities to support achievement so all can learn. The best way to start gamifying is to try it with one lesson. Having gamified whole courses, I recommend starting small—try developing some achievements and badges. (Find more game mechanics at Badgeville Wiki.) If you are concerned that students might not do work if they’re not earning extra credit, establish experience points and levels. As in open sandbox games, adding one game mechanic at a time can transform your classroom.

Using music in the classroom

Using music in the classroom | Effectieve leerstrategien voor de toekomst | Scoop.it
The alpha state is attained when brainwaves are operating at a frequency of between 8 to 12 hertz, when a person is effortlessly alert and relaxed – a state that enables learning to take place. The beta state of 13 to 40 hertz is the frequency the brain generates during normal daily activities. The delta state occurs during deep sleep, and the theta during meditation and deep sleep – states that shouldn’t be occurring in the classroom!

The Next Stage of Personalised Learning: a virtual tutor for every student

The Next Stage of Personalised Learning: a virtual tutor for every student | Effectieve leerstrategien voor de toekomst | Scoop.it
I do not believe that any machine could be as engaging or inspiring as a good teacher. Instead, human teachers could be supported by AI tutors, so that they have more time to focus on what they do best – creating positive classroom environments, planning exciting lessons, and developing richer more personal connections with each individual student.

Very interesting. I've been thinking for a while about how AI could help teachers with feedback. There are always issues with teacher time regarding how much personalised feedback students get, what if the feedback on some of each student's extra writing and speaking (recorded) practice was provided by AI? More practice, more feedback and more 'data' for a teacher to see on each student.

Would this work? Would it be good? Who knows?! But it seems interesting to me.
Mauricio Ramírez's curator insight, October 31, 9:17 PM
"What if we could give every student their own virtual tutor?", this is such a profound question that drove me to think about not only my students' necessities, but my own as an English facilitator who sometimes finds it quite difficult to guide learners, give them timely feedback and prepare classes and tests. Thus, having a virtual tutor would not only be ideal, but useful in order to help students practice and therefore improve their language skills; however, my only concern up to this point would be whether Artifitial Intelligence (AI) might replace teachers, and although the author emphasized on the idea that "with AI, we might see driverless cars but we will not see teacherless classrooms.", I still have my doubts going on in my head. Worth reading anyway! ;)

5 Ways to Cultivate Creativity in Life and Work

5 Ways to Cultivate Creativity in Life and Work | Effectieve leerstrategien voor de toekomst | Scoop.it
I believe that all human beings are creative, and that creative thinking is a central part of self-expression. Self-expression is a gift we give ourselves and the world. Creativity, therefore, is at the heart of being fully engaged in life and work. Creativity, like any other skill, can be fostered and developed. Under the right conditions, the muse (creative inspiration) will visit each and every one of us in its own unique way.

There are no new questions. Have a research question? Trust me, it’s been asked before. Put your exact question into quotations as a search term, and you will find, at the very least, a lead to your answer. Want to find out how much of the ocean has been explored? Type “How much of the ocean has been explored” into your search engine, and you will likely get your answer.

Increase student engagement with podcasts

Increase student engagement with podcasts | Effectieve leerstrategien voor de toekomst | Scoop.it
Much of the research on whether students are more engaged when using podcasts and other multimedia tools has so far focused mainly on college students. It’s been shown that some students, especially those who reported low levels of interest in the course, are more engaged when using podcasts in combination with traditional education tools. Until more research is done in K-12, we can assume that these results translate to younger students as well.
