Data Never Sleeps 2.0 - BI Insight - Business Intelligence

Data Never Sleeps 2.0 - BI Insight - Business Intelligence | EEDSP | Scoop.it
A few years ago, Domo created a wildly-popular infographic that cataloged how much data is created by common web services every minute. Since the internet landscape changes so quickly, Domo decided to revisit the topic and see what’s changed, through the same ‘one minute’ lens. Enjoy!

Small Datum

his has results for a read-only workload where all data is cached. The test query fetches all columns in one doucment/row by PK. For InnoDB all data is in the buffer pool. For TokuMX and MongoDB all data is in the OS filesystem cache and accessed via mmap'd files. The test server has 40 CPU cores with HT enabled and the test clients share the host with mysqld/mongod to reduce variance from network latency. This was similar to a previous test, except the database is in cache and the test host has more CPU cores.

Spark for Data Science: A Case Study - Hortonworks

Spark for Data Science: A Case Study - Hortonworks | EEDSP | Scoop.it
I’m a pretty heavy Unix user and I tend to prefer doing things the Unix Way™, which is to say, composing many small command line oriented utilities. With composability comes power and with specialization comes simplicity. Although, sometimes if two utilities are used all the time, sometimes it makes sense for either:

A utility that specializes in a very common use-case
One utility to provide basic functionality from another utility

For example, one thing that I find myself doing a lot of is searching a directory recursively for files that contain an expression:
Despite the fact that you can do this, specialized utilities, such as ack have come up to simplify this style of querying. Turns out, there’s also power in not having to consult the man pages all the time. Another example, is the interaction between uniq and sort. uniq presumes sorted data.…

GT!Blog » Character Encodings For Modern Programmers

The easiest way to understand the current state of encodings is to look at the history of how we got to where we are today. The pre-ASCII days are not particularly relevant, but they are interesting, so I have run through the various encodings that preceded ASCII from a technical perspective here if you are interested. The story of Unicode really starts with ASCII. Note that since Windows and UNIX are the only two types of operating systems of interest to most modern programmers, I’m only going to discuss them. (Linux, iOS, Android, etc. are all UNIX-based). First I’m going to go through all the problems of the various pre-Unicode ASCII based encodings, and then I’ll provide some programming pointers for cross-platform programming. You can skip the pre-Unicode stuff if you’re not interested in the history

Getting Started with Neo4j 2.0 | World Wide Webber | EEDSP | Scoop.it

With the recent release of Neo4j 2.0 and it’s a great time to get familiar with graphs and graph databases. Neo4j is quite different from relational databases, and it’s also quite different from most of the other NoSQL databases. The reason for its differences is that it addresses more complex challenges with interconnected (joined-up) data.  This makes Neo4j ideal for high fidelity modelling and high-performance querying of rich, real-world domains.
