Introducing practical and robust anomaly detection in a time series | Twitter Blogs | EEDSP | Scoop.it

Both last year and this year, we saw a spike in the number of photos uploaded to Twitter on Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Year’s Eve (in other words, an anomaly occurred in the corresponding time series). Today, we’re announcing AnomalyDetection, our open-source R package that automatically detects anomalies like these in big data in a practical and robust way.

Ceph Bobtail Performance – IO Scheduler Comparison Ceph

Ceph Bobtail Performance – IO Scheduler Comparison Ceph | EEDSP | Scoop.it

One of the strangest things about the holidays is how productive I am. Maybe it’s the fact that Minnesota is bitterly cold this time of year, and the only entertaining things to do outside often involve subzero winds rushing at your face. Or perhaps it’s the desire to escape from all other forms of life after 4-5 consecutive holiday celebrations. In any event, this is the time of year where (assuming I’m not shoveling 3 feet of snow) I tend to get a bit more done. Luckily for you that means we’ve got a couple of new articles already in the works. - See more at: http://ceph.com/community/ceph-bobtail-performance-io-scheduler-comparison/#sthash.Z9suJwrs.dpuf

New Study Reveals Most Influential Languages | IFLScience | EEDSP | Scoop.it
What makes a language important on a global scale? Is it the oldest? The one spoken by the most people? What about the one that has the greatest ability to reach other people by being translated? A multidisciplinary research team has examined the languages of the world and categorized them on how widely certain forms of media are translated into other languages. César Hidalgo of MIT led the research, and the paper was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Yandex technologies. MatrixNet | EEDSP | Scoop.it
The job of a search engine is, first and foremost, to provide answers to user’s queries. In response to each query, a search engine returns links to web pages it finds in its index – a database of web pages known to this particular search engine. Thus, an answer to the user’s query comes in the form of search results – a list of hyperlinks to web pages, whose content matches this query.

Nested virtualization for the next-generation cloud

Nested virtualization for the next-generation cloud | EEDSP | Scoop.it
Cloud computing is a reality that has changed both business and development models for online businesses. But current IaaS cloud models place a significant constraint on software developers—namely, dictating the hypervisor they must use. The requirement on virtual machine images removes choice from cloud users and to some is an obstacle for moving to the cloud. But a breakthrough from IBM research will change this model. The technology, called nested virtualization, permits a deeper solution stack where guest virtual machines sit on a guest hypervisor, which in turn runs on the cloud's chosen hypervisor. In this article, we explore the ideas behind nested virtualization and how it will improve the cloud.

Under the Hood: Indexing and ranking in Graph Search

Under the Hood: Indexing and ranking in Graph Search | EEDSP | Scoop.it

Search ranking is the process of choosing the best set of results for a search query. Our team combines data-driven techniques with intuition to create a process that is roughly:

Come up with an idea for a ranking change – ideas come from a mix of creativity on the part of our ranking engineers and feedback from our users

Implement the ranking change, test it, and launch it to a very small fraction of our user base

Measure the impact of the ranking change

Our goal is to maximize searcher happiness, which we do our best to quantify through metrics like click through rate (CTR), NDCG, engagement, etc. We have to measure the impact of ranking changes on all of these metrics to maintain a proper balance.

Modern Microprocessors - A 90 Minute Guide!

Modern Microprocessors - A 90 Minute Guide! | EEDSP | Scoop.it

WARNING: This article is meant to be informal and fun!

Okay, so you're a CS graduate and you did a hardware/assembly course as part of your degree, but perhaps that was a few years ago now and you haven't really kept up with the details of processor designs since then.

In particular, you might not be aware of some key topics that developed rapidly in recent times...

pipelining (superscalar, OoO, VLIW, branch prediction, predication)multi-core & simultaneous multithreading (SMT, hyper-threading)SIMD vector instructions (MMX/SSE/AVX, AltiVec)caches and the memory hierarchy

Fear not! This article will get you up to speed fast. In no time you'll be discussing the finer points of in-order vs out-of-order, hyper-threading, multi-core and cache organization like a pro.

But be prepared – this article is brief and to-the-point. It pulls no punches and the pace is pretty fierce (really). Let's get into it...
