Sirius: An Open Intelligent Personal Assistant | EEDSP | Scoop.it

Sirius is an open end-to-end standalone speech and vision based intelligent personal assistant (IPA) similar to Apple’s Siri, Google’s Google Now, Microsoft’s Cortana, and Amazon’s Echo. Sirius implements the core functionalities of an IPA including speech recognition, image matching, natural language processing and a question-and-answer system. Sirius is developed by Clarity Lab at the University of Michigan. Sirius is published at the International Conference on Architectural Support for Programming Languages and Operating Systems

Image Processing with C++ AMP and the .NET Framework - Visual C++ Team Blog - Site Home - MSDN Blogs

Image processing is a computational task that lends itself very well to GPU compute scenarios. In many cases the most commonly used algorithms are inherently massively parallel, with each pixel in the image being processed independently from the others. As a result, image processing toolkits have been early adopters of the new GPGPU programming model.

How to make a scientific result disappear

How to make a scientific result disappear | EEDSP | Scoop.it
Nathan Danneman (a co-author and one of my graduate students from Emory) recently sent me a New Yorker article from 2010 about the “decline effect,” the tendency for initially promising scientific results to get smaller upon replication.

How To Build a Cardboard Quadcopter
Keeping with our recent all-multirotor all-the-time theme, it’s time for another how-to post! Plans are afoot, and scheming has been schemed. The flying robot skeletons have been piling up in a corner of the workshop, and after several revisions we’ve narrowed down the design to something worth sharing.

An update on visualizing Bayesian updating

An update on visualizing Bayesian updating | EEDSP | Scoop.it
A while ago I wrote this post with some R code to visualize the updating of a beta distribution as the outcome of Bernoulli trials are observed. The code provided a single plot of this process, with all the curves overlayed on top of one another.

The Neural Network Zoo - The Asimov Institute

The Neural Network Zoo - The Asimov Institute | EEDSP | Scoop.it
With new neural network architectures popping up every now and then, it’s hard to keep track of them all. Knowing all the abbreviations being thrown around (DCIGN, BiLSTM, DCGAN, anyone?) can be a bit overwhelming at first. So I decided to compose a cheat sheet containing many of those architectures. Most of these are neural networks, some are completely …

An Appropriate Use of Metrics

An Appropriate Use of Metrics | EEDSP | Scoop.it

Management love their metrics. The thinking goes something like this, "We need a number to measure how we’re doing. Numbers focus people and help us measure success." Whilst well intentioned, management by numbers unintuitively leads to problematic behavior and ultimately detracts from broader project and organizational goals. Metrics inherently aren’t a bad thing; just often, inappropriately used. This essay demonstrates many of the issues caused by management’s traditional use of metrics and offers an alternative to address these dysfunctions.
