| Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Tools for unlocking Innovation

Tools for unlocking Innovation | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

By tapping into the bright minds outside its walls, the company believes it can improve the innovation that goes on inside them. ‘You pretty quickly start to understand, you can’t do it all,’ says Beth Comstock, GE’s senior vice president and CMO, who is heading up the company’s open innovation push. And it does make sense.

Today, you don’t need every expert in-house, nor is it always smart to hire a sole contractor. Rather, it’s totally possible, and often more efficient, to crowdsource for that knowledge. Liguori puts it this way: ‘For all of the smart engineers at GE, we sure don’t have a lock on all of the smart engineers in the world.’

Comstock believes that by marrying the insight of people outside your company with the smart people inside it, you’ll get to a solution faster than you otherwise would have.

Teachers whose lessons extend beyond the classroom

Teachers whose lessons extend beyond the classroom | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

A classroom is more than just an area for arithmetic lessons and vocabulary regurgitation; it's the cornerstone of a child's future. We've been told time and time again that teaching is the most underappreciated yet most necessary profession in our nation — and this shouldn't be so.

Today, on National Teacher Appreciation Day, it's time to stop what we're doing, take a step back and acknowledge our everyday heroes: The third grade teacher who sat with you after school to work on your multiplication tables, or the high school guidance counselor who instilled in you the courage and confidence to apply to your dream university. You know who these people are, so why not thank them? Our nation's educators are the ones who propel us forward each day, and their memories and lessons should be cherished.

Maximizing profit: The PBL classroom without PBL

Maximizing profit: The PBL classroom without PBL | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Facilitating problem-based learning (PBL) in the classroom requires a shift in pedagogy from a "stand and deliver" class. The problem presented at the beginning of a PBL cycle must create an authentic need for students to develop 21st century skills such as:

  • Collaboration
  • Communication
  • Problem solving
  • Reflection skills

A problem we presented in our math classroom is: "How can the student store maximize profit?" This question serves as a strong avenue to facilitate collaboration, meaning that when students try to work alone, it is too hard or too large of a task. PBL requires students to communicate their understanding of the problem, helping them develop critical thinking skills and increasing academic discourse in the classroom. Reflection is also an important part of a PBL cycle. Students should reflect on their process of solving the problem, but also on how collaboration, strong communication skills and thinking critically with peers made the process more manageable. Once students see value in these skills, they can begin making them part of everyday work, whether or not a PBL-focused problem is present.

Learning with a blended approach

Learning with a blended approach | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Blended learning programs are quickly becoming common place in K-12 educational settings, but also in the professional industry. Innovation in this area is being driven by a more personalized learning experience, engaging content, and collaboration.

If you are unfamiliar with blended learning, it is a format of education in which at least a portion of the learning content and instruction is delivered online. The main benefit with this approach being that the user gains control over the time, place, path, or pace of their learning experience.

A well-done blended learning program helps to build higher-order thinking skills. It takes the emphasis off of “remembering” and gets the learner “evaluating” and “creating”. This is one reason why blended learning is growing.

[Slideshare] Creative Commons V4.0 for Education (new)

In 2013, we launched version 4.0 of the CC license suite and it is ready for anyone to use now to apply to their educational resources or other creative works.

But what does that mean? What’s new in 4.0 that wasn’t there in 3.0? And just as importantly, what has stayed the same so that you don’t have to worry about changes to licenses you weren’t expecting? Lastly, I’ll go over some examples of organizations and institutions who have already upgraded to the 4.0 version of whatever license they were using.

Note: These slides are meant to be used as a resource by presenters - please download the file and see the detailed notes accompanying each slide for the actual information.

What happens when we don't connect

What happens when we don't connect | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

When discussing how the brain is “wired,” the references usually involve violence, greed, and self-interest. Jeremy Rikfin offers a different perspective in this RSA Animation Lecture where he offers a more primal characteristic of our humanity: the need to belong. In outlining this theory, he provides 4 fundamental human needs that:

4 Primary Human Drives

  1. Sociability
  2. Attachment
  3. Affection
  4. Companionship

These needs align very neatly with what connectivity, social learning, and even pop social media platforms provide. This would imply that the need to selfie, like, and check-in, align yourself with certain brands, and other tech-habits may not be so much the result of weakness and addiction, but rather a serendipitous alignment between the way you’re wired and the talent of prevailing technology.

In the video, Rifkin focuses on the idea of empathy–examples, what it means, etc.–and finishes his talk offering another theory about what happens when these needs to connect, relate to, and belong are repressed. That is, when the primary drives fails, the following drives take over.

4 Secondary Human Drives

  1. Narcissism
  2. Materialism
  3. Violence
  4. Aggression

¿Es la Gamificación el futuro del eLearning?

¿Es la Gamificación el futuro del eLearning? | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

A vision of the future from those likely to invent it

A vision of the future from those likely to invent it | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

From employment to leisure and transportation to education, tech is changing the world at a faster pace than ever before. Already, people wear computers on their faces, robots scurry through factories and battlefields and driverless cars dot the highway that cuts through Silicon Valley. Almost two-thirds of Americans think technological change will lead to a better future, while about one-third think people’s lives will be worse as a result, according to a new survey from Pew Research Center. Regardless, expect more change. In a series of interviews, which have been condensed and edited, seven people who are driving this transformation provided a glimpse into the not-too-distant future.

20 simple assessment strategies you can use every day

20 simple assessment strategies you can use every day | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

The ultimate goal of teaching is understanding. But sometimes it’s easier to talk than to teach, as we all know, especially when we need to cover a lot of material in a short amount of time. We hope students will understand, if not now then before test time, and we keep our fingers crossed that their results will indicate we’ve done our job. The problem is, we often rely on these tests to measure understanding and then we move on. There isn’t always time to address weaknesses and misunderstandings after the tests have been graded, and by that time it’s too late for students to be interested.

¿Tecnología e innovación educativa o viceversa? (Márcia Padilha) | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

On the edge of chaos: Where creativity flourishes

On the edge of chaos: Where creativity flourishes | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

If it’s true, in Sir Ken Robinson’s words, that “Creativity is not an option, it’s an absolute necessity,” then it’s that much more imperative to find ways to bring creativity to learning.

But first, we have to understand what conditions foster true creativity. One definition that scientists have agreed upon for creativity is the ability to create something that’s both novel as compared to what came before, and has value. “It’s this intersection of novelty and value, a combination of those two features that’s particularly important,” Dr. Robert Bilder, a psychiatry and psychology professor at UCLA’s Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior. In any system, there are forces pushing towards organization and others introducing unpredictability. A truly creative idea straddles both of those states.

“The truly creative changes and the big shifts occur right at the edge of chaos,” Bilder said.

Top 7 BYOD readiness questions for the school teachers

Top 7 BYOD readiness questions for the school teachers | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

With education and education technology (edTech) diversification, it has become increasingly challenging for the teachers and school administrators to keep abreast of all the novel concern that education technology brings along. School administrators and teachers can love the changes or they can hate it but they most certainly cannot ignore the edTech.

Implementation of common core state standards has made it mandatory for the schools to implement teaching through the present day education technology or edTech. The examination of students, right from grade 3 onwards, would be conducted through computers. The new format of examinations prepared by PARCC and SBAC also involve use of present day edTech and thus, it is but obvious that the schools have to incorporate technology in education.

However, a bigger challenge that the schools face is the cost of procurement of technology and technical devices for education. While schools always have an issue of funds, rather than making huge investment in technology an easy way sort out is to allow students to Bring Your Own Device or BYOD. You must obtain a detailed insight of what is BYOD, its framework and advantages of BYOD for schools before you make up your mind.

How online classrooms are adapting to the Mobile Generation

How online classrooms are adapting to the Mobile Generation | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Education is a crucial component to success in the modern world. With the ever-progressing forms of communication and technology, we have seen an explosion of online tools and options that have become available to the mobile and tech savvy generation of today. Enhanced Models and Simulations Image via Flickr by possbeth In the past, teachers used tools...

In the past, teachers used tools from the environment to demonstrate concepts that were difficult for students to fully comprehend. A tuning fork, for example, illustrated how vibrations create sound.

Today, teachers have more refined resources they can appeal to in order to demonstrate concepts that are extremely difficult to understand. For example, digital simulations are used to model complex systems: weather patterns, chemical bonding, Fluid mechanics, and other complicated concepts — particularly those which unfold over time or through a convoluted series of reactions.

Similar tools are now used in helping develop new technologies in science, engineering, and mathematics.

Tierney, who has experience with Maryland’s and Tennessee’s Higher Education Commissions, spoke at this year’s SxSW EDU conference on the capacity for outcomes-based funding to boost performance for higher education institutions. In this interview, Tierney sheds light on the benefits of the performance-based funding model and explores one of its most significant critiques; that such a model would punish institutions that serve mainly non-traditional and high-risk students.

Awesome Chart: Traditional vs New Learning Environments

Awesome Chart: Traditional vs New Learning Environments | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

As I argued yesterday in a post entitled "Mobile Learning Explained Visually", the impact of emerging technologies is transforming those key traditional conceptions that have accompanied education since the dawn of time. In the span of one single decade, we witnessed the birth of dozens of new learning theories (some of which are old wine in new bottles) and the emergence of new forms of learning that are grounded in the social capital afforded by the net. With these new changes comes a new conceptualization of teaching methodologies, ones that can better live up to the expectations of today's learners. One of the areas where you can really notice the transformative impact of technology on education is in the new learning environments that are being designed or reshaped to accommodate the ethos of the emerging technologies.

30 plataformas virtuales educativas gratuitas | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it
