5 excellent new Twitter tools for teachers

5 excellent new Twitter tools for teachers | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it
Twitter is one of the best platforms for creating and growing your personal/professional learning network (PLN). The strength of this microblogging tool lies in its easy accessibility and its sweeping widespread among a larger and diversified base of users. Creating a PLN in Twitter starts with following Tweetors whose tweets can potentially be of an added value to you. A rule of thumb here is that before you follow anyone, make sure you peruse through the tweets they have been sharing and see if they intersect with your own interests and goals. If so, use the snowballing strategy to find other similar Tweetors to follow. In other words, when you find somebody worthy of following, check their following list, chances are he/she is following other like-minded people you might want to add to your PLN as well.

Hashtags are another important tools to use to enrich your PLN. Look for hashtags related to your area of interest and check the people who are using them. Check out this guide to learn more about how to use the concept of hashtags. I am also sharing with you a bunch of interesting third party web tools that can help you make the best of your educational tweeting experience. The tools I picked out for you today are meant to assist you tap into the full educational potential of your Twitter PLN.

[PDF] Classrooms without walls: A comparison of instructor performance in online courses differing in class size

[PDF] Classrooms without walls: A comparison of instructor performance in online courses differing in class size | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

It is difficult to deny that online learning has had steady growth in recent years. A benefit to any institution implementing online courses is not needing a physical space for a group of students. In an online classroom, there are no physical barriers limiting the number of desks that can be placed in the classroom. With the potential to have larger class sizes, how might that affect instructors’ ability to perform their teaching duties? The purpose of this study was to look at instructors’ performance while teaching online courses and how class size might influence their performance. The results of this study suggest that there may be some negative consequences in terms of instructor performance and the quality of instruction in online courses with larger class sizes.

Metodologías Activas: Aprendizaje Servicio (ApS)

Metodologías Activas: Aprendizaje Servicio (ApS) | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

La señal crítica | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

The Future of Education: What's over the horizon?

The Future of Education: What's over the horizon? | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it
Like almost every product and service in our world, education is changing. New technologies designed to simplify and streamline the transference of information from those who have it to those who do not are being designed and refined at a pace and scale never seen before.

Information that was once the reserve of the elite is now being disseminated to new demographics, democratising education in a way that was unthinkable less than a generation ago.

But exactly how is that change happening, and what will the classroom – or virtual classroom – of the future look like? The chalk and blackboards of the 20th century may have disappeared along with the home telephone and the pocket calculator, but can we really expect that virtual classrooms-in-the-cloud are the inevitable apex of progression? Will technological innovation be responsible for meeting every new educational challenge, or will educators need to look at ways of tailoring the learning experience to suit different students’ needs? And, for that matter, will traditional educators be needed at all?

Open Colleges asked six global education professionals to peer into the crystal ball:

MOOCs in workplace learning (part 4): Their role in corporate universities

MOOCs in workplace learning (part 4): Their role in corporate universities | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

The world has gotten complicated. Organizations are struggling to keep up with the shifts:

in technology that are vastly impacting how people work, in the demography of their workforce which has become culturally diverse, multi-generational, and globally dispersed, in the nature of work that has moved from complicated to complex and emergent, and with the general fragmentation and breakdown of all aspects of the known ways of doing things.

We live in an age of dramatic oxymoron - unemployment is high yet there is a talent shortage. It is no surprise that skills required to meet this changing trends are in woefully short supply. The formal education system still functions as it always did churning out graduates ill-equipped to meet the demands of the current day organizations. The skills shortage looming ahead is alarming to say the least. It's roughly estimated that only "20% of the workers will have the skills needed for 60% of the jobs (mostly because the job haven’t been invented yet) by the end of the decade".

[PDF] Social network analysis of undergraduate education student interaction in online peer mentoring settings

[PDF] Social network analysis of undergraduate education student interaction in online peer mentoring settings | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

This study uses social network analysis to examine the patterns of student interactions in online peer mentoring sites within an undergraduate teacher education program. The peer mentoring sites were developed to provide both newcomers and more experienced peers the opportunity to discuss, share, and learn both from and with one another. The study demonstrated that the online peer mentoring sites supported interaction among first year and third year students. In particular, the networks formed by these interactions were sparse; online students did not seek or share course-related advice and information across the sites as a whole, but were selective with those whom they sought out for support, information, or guidance. This study has implications for future research to determine why students chose to use the peer mentoring sites to interact with their peers and what these interactions provided them. Such data could inform the ways the sites helped support students both in their transition and advancement in the program, and could be useful in assisting future development of the peer mentoring sites and similar learning spaces.

[Infographic] Blended and Online Assessment Taxonomy

[Infographic] Blended and Online Assessment Taxonomy | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it
The first part of an assessment design is the most obvious; the student performance, or more simply referred to as the activity. This requires a student to show the teacher what they know or can do. The second part assessment design is often assumed or omitted; however, this part of the assessment is critical to optimizing alignment to the objectives, and provides valuable support towards student success. This critical component is the grading plan or better named the feedback criteria. As a teacher, we need to effectively communicate to our learners both a description of how they will perform an assessment activity as well as a description of how we will judge the quality of their performance. Are you planning and communicating your feedback criteria? The Blended and Online Assessment Taxonomy Infographic presents types of activities that suit various levels of assessment as well as grading and feedback criteria which will help you plan better assessments.

Personalised Learning: What's coming and 10 trends every educator needs to know

Personalised Learning: What's coming and 10 trends every educator needs to know | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it
Personalised Learning is the tailoring of pedagogy, curriculum, and learning environment to meet the needs and aspirations of individual learners. In a personalised learning environment, learning starts with the learner, not the instructor. The learner understands how she learns best, so she is active in designing her learning goals. The learner has a voice in how she will access and acquire information, and a choice in how she will express what she knows. When she owns and takes responsibility of her education, she is more motivated and engaged in the learning process.

Many educators believe personalised Learning has the potential to drive breakthrough results for students, and as a result movements have begun cropping up all over the world.

What do we really mean when we say ‘Personalized Learning’?

What do we really mean when we say ‘Personalized Learning’? | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

The idea of personalized learning is seductive – it implies moving away from the industrialized form of education that pumps out cookie-cutter students with the same knowledge and skills. After decades of this approach, it is clear that all children don’t learn the same way and personalization seems to honor those differences. However, that term has taken on several different meanings.

When you say personalization, what do you mean by that?” asked Diana Laufenberg, director of Inquiry Schools and a former teacher at Science Leadership Academy in Philadelphia. “It’s not a word that always means the same thing.”

Personalization is often used in the ed-tech community to describe a student moving through a prescribed set of activities at his own pace. The only choice a student gets is what box to check on the screen and how quickly to move through the exercises. For many educators that’s not the true meaning of “personalized learning.”

Three trends that will influence learning and teaching in 2015

Three trends that will influence learning and teaching in 2015 | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it
There is no shortage of predictions for the upcoming year of 2015. Micro-credentials, digital wearables and mobile learning are just a few of the many. Yet predictions are notorious for misleading and even wildly inaccurate assurances. But analyzing trends across industries in conjunction with developments within a sector—the education sector in this instance, is far more constructive and strategic than considering stand-alone predictions. There are themes and patterns worthy of educators, administrators and stakeholders investment of time and consideration. This post examines and explores three trends that meet the worthy criteria. The three: 1) Skill-specific education also known as competency-based education (CBE) is expanding to institutions and generating new education technology products and platforms, 2) Social learning facilitated by technology and the acceptance of MOOCs is a new and viable instructional method, and 3) Learning-on-the-go supported not just by mobile devices and internet connectivity, but by the availability of sophisticated applications with few barriers will expand learning to students seeking flexible access to education.

[PDF] Rhizomatic, digital habitat - A study of connected learning and technology application

[PDF] Rhizomatic, digital habitat - A study of connected learning and technology application | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

’Homo conexus’ is used as a metaphor for the alleged next evolution of homo sapiens, an evolution that prepares us for knowledge production in the technology rich ‘network society’. This paper describes an experiment with network learning utilizing collaborative web technologies in a cooperative learning environment in college education. The pedagogic design focuses on the individual learner’s role in the group and on the group as a part of a larger digital, learning cooperative. The authors use the notion of the rhizome as a metaphor for learning in ’the postmodern state’ of information sharing and knowledge building.

The paper suggests a new way/model of describing key competences for learning in the future based on ‘network literacy’. The competence to produce knowledge through information fragments in a hierarchical, rhizomatic network seems to be a vital competence when learners produce knowledge on the basis of internet information. Also, a teacher’s network literacy and his/her competency to utilize different, connected technologies is necessary when learners act and learn within a rhizomatic network.

The authors claim that when the classroom becomes a ‘digital habitat’ and the learning processes are social in a connected rhizomatic network then information sharing, knowledge production and technology embody a strong synergetic entity. The study suggests that technologies used to create ’digital habitats’ are likely to enhance learning and motivation and allow new creative ways of working with inclusion. Furthermore the study explores if there is a need for a new approach to the understanding of learning that takes social constructivism to the digital age with a point of departure in connectivism.

Beyond that the study shows that there is a need for teacher training. Teachers need more robust methodologies for gaining technology and network literacy. We found that students initial level of technological and network literacy had large impact on the success of their work. On the basis of that we recommend more focus on training ‘network literacy’ through authentic pedagogic designs that utilize personal technologies in rhizomatic networks.
