At TechSmith, we’re always looking for ways to improve our video content for our viewers. One great way to do that is to include customers or subject matter experts in our videos. The only problem? Time, distance, and budget constraints make it nearly impossible to visit everyone in person. Although with technology like Skype and Google Hangouts, we don’t have to. Instead of traveling on site, we can capture interviews in video calls then bring those recordings into the videos we create.


Recording Skype, Google Hangouts, or any digital video communication can be a useful way to interview subject matter experts and customers. The footage you record can be used in a variety of ways: marketing videos, internal presentations, market research, etc. Using quotes from experts in customer-facing videos has worked well for us here. (We’ll talk a bit more about permissions for this type of video at the end of the post.)

Bryant University, a private university located in Smithfield, Rhode Island with academic programs that integrate business and the arts and sciences with a global perspective, offers a glimpse of what the future of campus design could look like. Its new Academic Innovation Center (AIC) opened just this past fall.

The Center provides spaces for innovative and interdisciplinary teaching and learning where students can learn in novel formats, develop and prototype new products and services through a design-thinking approach, and collaborate. The goal is to bolster students’ capacity for innovation and creativity.

When we learn something outside the comfort zone, we attempt to acquire knowledge or skills in an area where we’re lacking. Part of the discomfort derives from learning something we anticipate will be difficult. We have no idea how to do it, or we think it requires abilities we don’t have or have in meager amounts. Moreover, poor performance or outright failure lurk as likely possibilities. In other words, it’s going to be hard and require concentration, and what we’re struggling to do, others can accomplish beautifully, seemingly without effort. Their skills, and our obvious lack of them, raise questions about our merits as a learner and maybe even our worth as a person.

After several decades of managing technology projects, I have enjoyed a good number of successes, but have also had the good fortune of being involved in some failures. Indeed, failure is an opportunity – a chance to learn how one might avoid repeating oversights or ill-formed assumptions that contributed to failure.

Experience, coupled with formal learning about the project management process, have taught me a number of consistent potential pitfalls that often accompany technology implementation projects. Following are twelve possible problem points for most education technology rollout efforts, and some thoughts on how to avoid falling into these traps (or at least how to be better prepared for them). These are really just fundamental concepts from the discipline of project management, adapted to instructional technology projects and the educational environment.

Exponential technologies have a tendency to move from a deceptively slow pace of development to a disruptively fast pace. We often disregard or don’t notice technologies in the deceptive growth phase, until they begin changing the way we live and do business. Driven by information technologies, products and services become digitized, dematerialized, demonetized and/or democratized and enter a phase of exponential growth.

Nicole Wilson, who was Singularity University’s vice president of faculty and curriculum until last year, believes education technology is currently in a phase of deceptive growth, and we are seeing the beginning of how exponential technologies are impacting 1) what we need to learn, 2) how we view schooling and society and 3) how we will teach and learn in the future.

In other words: teach by showing them (the students) what they already do rather than telling them what they should be doing but aren’t. Though I will talk about philosophy sessions, as that is my background, the principles and procedure that you will find outlined here apply to any teaching context where the teaching of CT skills will be of value, whether maths, English or P.E.

Mi sensación es que los docentes ven a la tecnología como un recurso educativo muy costoso, no en términos de dinero, sino de tiempo. Puede llevar un tiempo considerable para docentes y alumnos familiarizarse con una determinada tecnología antes de poder utilizarla de una manera “inteligente”. También lleva tiempo el establecer las condiciones de logística para acceder a la tecnología de la escuela. Sería pertinente preguntarnos si el tiempo que se requiere en el inicio y la preparación valen la pena en relación a los beneficios educativos obtenidos.

La tecnología puede también conectar a los docentes entre sí. Desafortunadamente, muchos docentes trabajan aislados y pierden de este modo la oportunidad de aprender cosas valiosas que quizás ocurren en el aula de al lado, puerta de por medio, y ni hablar de intercambiar buenas ideas con aquellos que están aún más lejos. Bransford et al (1999), del National Research Council (Concejo Nacional de Investigación), llevaron a cabo una amplia revisión sobre las mejores prácticas en la educación.

Many L&D teams are rightly sceptical of digital learning vendors who offer thousands of content options. They know that people won’t have the time nor the inclination to search through endless learning categories to find the resources they need. Offering choice a good thing. But if there’s too much choice, people can easily get lost in a mountain of content.

What’s needed is a new way to curate content, by focusing on the challenge that individuals are facing. When people speak to their family and friends, they don’t say “my team need a project management course”; they say “it’s chaos at work and no one knows what they’re doing.” They air the ‘problem’, not the solution. Learning content should be curated to address specific problems: if this is the challenge you’re facing, these are the resources you need.

They increase their ability to spot flaws in existing concepts and discover ways to adapt and improve them. As socio-economic issues continue to disrupt global progress, deeper learning skills could present the next generation with the means to ameliorate international relationships and financial deficiencies.

30 teachers arrived, excited to learn. They rolled up their sleeves and placed laptops and Robot kits on the floor. The room filled with excitement (and laughter!) as everyone tried to come up with different solutions on how to create different programs. The results were hilarious; a robot inspired by Darth Vader, a robot that asked everyone to turn the lights off when it was too bright in the room, and a robot that tricked the teacher to leave the classroom during an exam.

Not bad for a day of “work!”

Training, like above, is what we’re all about at ROBBO. ROBBO is a fun and simple way for absolutely anyone to get introduced to the world of robotics and coding. As a part of one of our many projects, we organized a training weekend for the single purpose of introducing teachers to programming and robotics. The teachers started with simple exercises in RobboScratch, a visual programming environment; moving the character, creating series of multiple commands, and learning the advantages of the infinite loop when making programs.

So, what do we mean about classroom robotics? Our educational robotics consist of two different robots; the Robot kit and the Lab. Both robots are ideal for learning programming, robotics as well as skills in problem-solving, mathematics and physics while working in interactive teams. The Lab includes a microphone, LED-lights, light sensor and a slider and is great for experimenting with different elements such as sound or light and numeric values. Our other robot is the Robot kit, equipped with a motor, which is a fun way to explore everyday technology using a touch sensor, proximity sensor, light sensor, line sensors and an LED-light. Our robots are programmed in the visual programming environment RobboScratch, an adapted version of Scratch developed at MIT.

As a teacher, you’re fully aware of how much the world is advancing through technology. Undoubtedly, innovation has touched many aspects of how you teach. The Internet has made it easier to gather, evaluate, summarize and disseminate information. If for example, you’re a math teacher, you may refer students struggling to grasp the Pythagorean Theorem to view Khan Academy videos so that they can catch up with the rest of the class.

Since you have probably used the Internet to post your own resume, you know how powerful it can be and how important it is to make your online presence as professional as possible. You can also use your knowledge and experience in job hunting to guide those students who don’t plan on going on to college on how to get internships and entry-level jobs after graduation. Job searching has changed remarkably over the past few years, and if your students are to succeed in the real world, they will have to take a very different approach than your previous graduating classes.

Bill Gates is investing billions and Mark Zuckerberg 100’s of millions, into the future of learning. We expect Edtech to transform the way we teach and learn.

Standardized testing and core standards are not going away, so many educators are turning to edtech to help them negotiate the demands of this exacting system. There is a growing relationship between these core standards and the personalized learning initiatives being funded by Gates and Zuckerberg. With these big investors at the table, educators are hopeful that the influx of edtech will move well beyond achieving benchmarks on standardized tests

Perhaps this is something to study more deeply and learn how it is done ‘professionally and properly’, I asked (in that parental way). It turns out that this may be a bad plan. The wisdom of the teaching staff is that there are things to learn about technology but that it is best “to find and develop your own worklflow”. A good studio producer, engineer or whatever will have ways of working that are effective for them and that they have worked out from experience. This is part preference of kit and software, part the ordering of activity and part finding your rhythm Gaining the experience is the education – learning by doing. Creativity is fundamental to the method as well as the music.
