Blended Learning solution in practice

Blended Learning solution in practice | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Blended learning is not only the buzz word. It is actually working. Why? Because we all realized that no single teaching approach is good enough to work for all learners. Since time immemorial we’ve been blending different instructional methods in our training initiatives. With the emergence of technology, this approach got new dimensions. And all this in order to give our learners an effective, integrated learning experience and the opportunity to move from passive to active learning.

[PDF] Selection against variants in the genome associated with educational attainment

[PDF] Selection against variants in the genome associated with educational attainment | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Epidemiological and genetic association studies show that genetics play an important role in the attainment of education. Here, we investigate the effect of this genetic component on the reproductive history of 109,120 Icelanders and the consequent impact on the gene pool over time. We show that an educational attainment polygenic score, POLYEDU, constructed from results of a recent study is associated with delayed reproduction (P < 10−100) and fewer children overall. The effect is stronger for women and remains highly significant after adjusting for educational attainment. Based on 129,808 Icelanders born between 1910 and 1990, we find that the average POLYEDU has been declining at a rate of ∼0.010 standard units per decade, which is substantial on an evolutionary timescale. Most importantly, because POLYEDU only captures a fraction of the overall underlying genetic component the latter could be declining at a rate that is two to three times faster.

[PDF] Neural architecture search with reinforcement learning

[PDF] Neural architecture search with reinforcement learning | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Neural networks are powerful and flexible models that work well for many difficult learning tasks in image, speech and natural language understanding. Despite their success, neural networks are still hard to design. In this paper, we use a recurrent network to generate the model descriptions of neural networks and train this RNN with reinforcement learning to maximize the expected accuracy of the generated architectures on a validation set. On the CIFAR-10 dataset, our method, starting from scratch, can design a novel network architecture that rivals the best human-invented architecture in terms of test set accuracy. Our CIFAR-10 model achieves a test error rate of 3.65, which is 0.09 percent better and 1.05x faster than the previous state-of-the-art model that used a similar architectural scheme. On the Penn Treebank dataset, our model can compose a novel recurrent cell that outperforms the widely-used LSTM cell, and other state-of-the-art baselines. Our cell achieves a test set perplexity of 62.4 on the Penn Treebank, which is 3.6 perplexity better than the previous state-of-the-art model. The cell can also be transferred to the character language modeling task on PTB and achieves a state-of-the-art perplexity of 1.214.

¿Revolución, involución?

¿Revolución, involución? | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

| Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

School of the Future

School of the Future | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

The school of the future is not a building, it is a culture of competence development, a pedagogical culture that has an active role in the development process of the information society. Schools and educational institutions need comprehensive development of pedagogy and a new pedagogical leadership; this requires systemic change in the operational culture. A change can only be made by ensuring that pedagogical leadership is actively oriented towards the future.

Edumorfosis's insight:

[Infographic] The state of technology in education

[Infographic] The state of technology in education | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it
In 2016, ClassFlow surveyed more than 1,500 educators across the UK to identify current attitudes and trends concerning technology in education. What we found, is that while teachers hearts are in the right place – with over half striving to innovate using technology as a tool for education – issues such as budget restraints and a lack of training are holding them back, with 70% of educators believing their school is not investing enough money in technology for education, or is investing in the wrong things.

However, with only 1% of teachers believing that there is no place for technology in the classroom, the future looks bright; with technology appreciated as a useful tool in a plethora of modern teaching methods, and resources.

The State of Technology in Education Infographic brings you a selection of the key highlights from the survey and subsequent report. Findings, highlight that teachers WANT to use technology in the classroom, but that investment is needed to ensure modern schools have the IT infrastructure necessary to reap the real educational benefits it provides; and ensure their long-term success.

Learning in the Modern Workplace is much MORE than courses and resources

Learning in the Modern Workplace is much MORE than courses and resources | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Organisations are no longer like they were 50 years ago; people are constantly moving around in their careers, and this is set to continue. So whereas training was originally done to people at a time when it was about training people to do a job for life, it is increasingly clear that conventional training practices and approaches are now outdated. Individuals mostly want to learn what they need for their job,  as and when they need it – and L&D can’t possibly provide everything everyone needs. What is more people learn in many different ways – not just through organised L&D activities – but everyday, inside and outside the workplace.

Modern Professional Learning is how we learn in the new world of work; it is more than being taught or trained and includes many different elements as shown in the diagram below.

What's hot: 9 major Ed Tech rends for 2017 | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it
Figuring out just what will captivate educators from one year to the next is a fickle business. The thing everybody was trying one year is on the way out the next. Other movements seem to have the staying power of cork in a bulletin board — always there, always ready for some new take. So it goes forthis year too.

The use of gaming, flipped learning, banning cell phones and purchasing tablets appear to be waning, while some new movements are definitely waxing. According to the 16 education experts THE Journal conferred with, you'll be hearing a lot more about nine instructional areas in particular: active learning, augmented reality, maker spaces, Next Generation Science Standards, open educational resources, robotics and STEAM, coding and student privacy. Those last two are red hot. Among the nine, only two of those topics surfaced in last year's list too: coding and OER.

How virtual reality technology is changing the way students learn

How virtual reality technology is changing the way students learn | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it
For many years, schools and universities have had to change the way they work and teach in order to fit in with technology.

Software like PowerPoint, for example, which has long been used as an education tool, wasn’t designed for education. Nonetheless, it has been a staple tool in education settings, used as a way to present information in template, bite-size formats.

But this isn’t always a good thing.

The use of digital technologies sees some teachers and students presenting information using templates, which means much of the individual character of teachers’ practices can be lost.

Research shows that software such as PowerPoint can homogenise and sanitise the way teachers present information to their students.

Only more recently are we seeing technology being designed and utilised specifically for education contexts, and it’s changing the way students learn and understand things.

Change with Digital

Change with Digital | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Our society and business life are highly digital, but the educational institutions are only just taking the first steps in becoming digital. The digitalization of teaching and education cannot be achieved by purchasing computers, tablets or interactive whiteboards – as counterintuitive as it may seem, thoughtlessly acquired technological equipment often proves to be an obstacle slowing down digitalization. Digitalization of the school should always involve enabling new, more efficient learning and teaching processes in information technology – making new processes possible – not simply replacing the pen or the blackboard with an electronic version. Technology must always bring added value to pedagogy.

Information technology can be used to enrich teaching and increase its methodical diversity, thereby providing students with better prerequisites for learning new things. However, using information technology in teaching and learning must be carried out systematically, based on the strategic goals of the curriculum and the educational institution. The main focus in using technology in teaching is not on learning the technical skills, but on utilizing information and communication technology pedagogically in different subjects and themes. In fact, the greatest benefits of using technology are gained from systematic use, closely linked to the learner’s learning process.

10 trends of Personalized Learning in 2017

10 trends of Personalized Learning in 2017 | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Personalized Learning continues to be on everyone’s mind. 2017 will see exciting examples and models of personalized learning that will be unique for each community. The idea of personalizing learning is not about creating one model that works for everyone; it is about creating an authentic model based on the needs of everyone in that learning community. We see the trends as a way to focus more on the distinctive characteristics of each learner and adapt the system and process as they learn, grow, and change. Teachers are learners too, and that means developing a support system for change. We divided the 2017 ten trends into five categories:

  • Process: UDL, innovation and creativity as the foundation for personalized learning.
  • Technology: Digital literacy plays a large role in personalized learning.
  • Structural: How learners will learn at their own pace and build their network.
  • Teaching & Learning: Learning is personal for both learners and teachers.
  • Cultural: When teachers encourage equity and agency, culture in the classroom changes.

We decided to choose two trends for each of the five categories that we believe will be big this coming year. Each of these trend takes in so much around personalized learning that we see multiple directions teachers and learners can use these trends to grow and change throughout the year and beyond.

Microlearning in practical examples

Microlearning in practical examples | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

It’s official: microlearning has been the hottest new e-Learning trend of 2016. It was the talk of the DevLearn 2016 conference, and the number of articles on the topic published by the leading e-Learning websites is, frankly, a bit frightening. If you’ve been living under a rock recently and haven’t heard of microlearning, the idea behind it is really simple: delivering information in bite-sized chunks, so that every concept or idea has an individual learning unit dedicated to it. For example, a video tutorial explaining a concept or answering a “How does X work” would be a good example of microlearning.

Microlearning pursues the following goals:

  1. Making information more accessible by portioning it into small chunks.

  2. Motivating the learners.

  3. Creating supporting tools for learning.

  4. Assisting with knowledge consolidation.

[PDF] Shaping the Habits of Mind of diverse learners in early childhood teacher education programs throught PowerPoint: An illustrative case

[PDF] Shaping the Habits of Mind of diverse learners in early childhood teacher education programs throught PowerPoint: An illustrative case | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it
This study examines the use of PowerPoint as a teaching tool in a workplace-embedded program aimed at bridging immigrant/refugee early childhood educators into post-secondary studies, and how, in the process, it shapes students’ “habits of mind” (Turkle, 2004). The premise of the study is that it is not only the bodies of knowledge shaping teacher education programs which must be interrogated, but also the ways in which instructors and programs choose to represent and impart these understandings to students. The use of PowerPoint to advance an authoritative western, linear, rule-governed form of logic is analyzed based on McLuhan and McLuhan’s (1988) and Adams’ (2006) tetrads. The findings demonstrate that PowerPoint enhances western authoritative ways of being through its modes of communication and representation, means of organizing information, forms of representing content and pedagogical approaches, thus obsolescing or displacing immigrant/refugee students’ own indigenous ways of knowing. Since learning always involves the development, integration, and reorganization of tools, and the medium is an extension of the self (McLuhan, 2003), the students should have multimodal opportunities to engage with and represent knowledge. When such opportunities are not provided, the life experiences and cultural knowledges of immigrant/refugee students are silenced. Expanding communicative and representative forms in early childhood
teacher education programs is necessary to promote a more inclusive environment.
