In the second half of the 20th century the U.S. was the global leader in education, with largest supply of highly qualified people in its adult labor force of any country in the world.

 

This tremendous stock of highly educated human capital helped the United States to become the dominant economy in the world and to take advantage of the globalization and expansion of markets. But that lead has shrunk significantly over the past decade…

 

Over the next 50 years the U.S. labor force is projected to grow only at about 0.6 percent per year as baby boomers retire. As a result, there are mounting concerns about future growth of the U.S. economy.

 

By 2018, 63 percent of U.S. jobs will require some form of post-secondary education or training, but only 41% of American adults today have a college degree in America.

Si queremos establecer una planificación, abierta por supuesto,  de escenarios de aprendizaje y de trabajo,deberemos siempre mirar hacia sobre el futuro mediante la comprensión de la naturaleza y el impacto de las fuerzas impulsoras más inciertas e importantes que afectan a nuestro mundo. Es un proceso de grupo que fomenta el intercambio y el desarrollo de una comprensión más profunda mutua de cuestiones centrales importantes para el futuro de la economía del conocimiento, de los espacios y los no lugares,  más en concreto,  del conocimiento.


El objetivo es elaborar una serie de historias divergentes extrapolando fuerzas impulsoras inciertas y que ejercerán mayor influencia. Las historias, junto con el trabajo para llegar allí tiene el doble objetivo de aumentar el conocimiento del entorno empresarial y formativo y se ensanchan tanto en  la percepción de los participantes frente a  posibles acontecimientos futuros, especialmente para los receptores.

The trend in K-12 education has steadily been towards teaching students skills and concepts that will be useful to them in college and beyond. No longer are teachers solely responsible for a specific curriculum — the focus has shifted to skill sets like problem solving, critical thinking and collaboration — transferable skills useful no matter where a student ends up.

The problem is that many colleges haven’t moved along the same progressive path and are still teaching students in large lectures courses that make little effort to connect the material to the lived experiences and passions of students.


A college in British Columbia, Canada is trying to change that trend, emphasizing depth over breadth and aiming to develop highly interdisciplinary students. “We need an education for the knowledge economy in which people are equipped with the processes to filter, combine and create new ideas and products for themselves and for society,” said John Helfand, President of Quest University Canada in a discussion with American RadioWorks’ host Stephen Smith.

A few days ago I came across a post published by Teachthought on the 9 roles for teachers that lead. This post was based on a book that has recently been published under the title "The Educator As A Maker Educator". The book is authored  by Jackie Gerstein (most of you would recognize her from her popular blog User Generated Education). As the book was both cheap ($2,90 on Amazon) and short (only 61 pages) I bought it and read on it on my kindle the same day. This book is an intellectual journey into the depths of the theoretical ideas  that informs progressive education. It highlights the role of educator as a maker, which is an idea rooted in the experiential insights of John Dewey.

The concept of  educator as a maker is further illustrated by the 9 roles Jackie thinks should be present in every teacher who is to lead a successful learning experience. These roles are :

Albert Einstein nailed it–“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.” That truth will decide whether we develop a 21st-century friendly educational system or continue to tinker at the margins of school.


So far, we’re not showing much out of the box thinking. The Common Core is really just an extension of the past, with a few new standards and practices thrown in to stimulate more problem-solving. My view is that part of the resistance to the Common Core is the nagging suspicion that focusing on standards as the ‘it’ of transformation is too feeble for the times; we seek deeper change, but don’t know how to go about it.


Partly, this is because we’re stuck in factory-model terminology—and getting unstuck can be hard work. Thinking is driven by metaphors that become patterns of thought. Over time, the patterns get hardwired into the brain and limit us to a particular world view. The old terms act like conduits to keep our thoughts contained and channeled in the direction of more industrial education rather than opening us up to a more fluid system based on personalized learning, inquiry, authentic projects, and distributed knowledge—all of which, we know, will be part of the future.


One way to get at the problem is to change our vocabulary intentionally so we can redirect our thoughts. It’s similar to the growth mindset. The words of the teacher affect the beliefs of the student and result in different performance. With advances in the research of neuroplasticity, we know these shifts are physiological as well as psychological. The brain is malleable, but needs direction. When it comes to reinventing schooling, that should be our aim as well.


Outside of education, this is familiar turf. Society and industry has had to invent thousands of innovative terms to capture new trends, attitudes, behaviors, and relationships. But education might as well be using rotary phones. So much of our vocabulary speaks to the past, not the future. Here are 10 examples.

Como su nombre indica, se trata de un curso online masivo abierto (MOOC) o COMA en español. Es un modelo para la entrega de contenido de aprendizaje en línea para prácticamente cualquier persona sin límite de asistencia. Los participantes pueden ser estudiantes matriculados en la institución que acoja la MOOC o cualquier persona con acceso a Internet. Los estudiantes “abiertos”, que no pagan nada por participar, pueden unirse a alguna o todas las actividades del curso, que pueden incluir vídeos, publicar en foros de discusión y blogs, y comentar a través de plataformas de medios sociales. Aunque los participantes “abiertos” no reciben ningún crédito por el curso y pueden tener poca o ninguna información directa por parte del instructor, su participación puede agregar una dinámica para el curso que beneficie a todos los estudiantes. La parte “masiva” del nombre refleja más bien la posibilidad de incluir un mayor número de estudiantes que el tamaño real de la clase.

Según The Economist el futuro de la universidad será online o no será. En su último número describe una institución que se verá obligada a dar un vuelco en los próximos años si no quiere perecer por falta de respuesta a la demanda social.
Vaticinan que los MOOCS, massive open online courses o cursos online en abierto, se convertirán en el método estándar de enseñanza en el futuro para una mayoría de estudiantes. Según esta teoría, que tiene algo de ciencia ficción aunque haya MOOCS desde hace años, las grandes estrellas del conocimiento aprenderán técnicas de comunicación con el fin de que sus clases puedan ser filmadas y difundidas a una gran cantidad de estudiantes que pagarán precios mucho más bajos por su educación. Los mediocres, que es como denominan a una inmensa mayoría de docentes que no enseñan en las denominadas universidades de la Ivy League, perecerán al igual que sus mediocres universidades. Sólo sobrevivirán las universidades de élite en las que su alto coste se ve compensado por el capital social que proporcionan los contactos y el contacto con estas superestrellas del conocimiento que, aunque no lo dicen, serán las que filmen las clases que todo el mundo se esforzará por ver.

Transformational teachers don't react. They anticipate and prepare. Lee Shulman, as reported by Marge Scherer, suggests that expert teachers demonstrate the following, despite enormous challenges:

Cognitive understanding of how students learn; emotional preparation to relate to many students whose varied needs are not always evident; content knowledge from which to draw different ways to present a concept; and, finally, the ability to make teaching decisions quickly and act on them.

If you only seek new information and knowledge for yourself, without spending time to make it personal, you will not advance your own growth (bottom left). If you keep your knowledge to yourself, you will not be viewed as a contributor to any knowledge networks, and will miss out on learning with and from others, especially professional colleagues (bottom right). However, if you share indiscriminately, you will be creating too much noise, and others will ignore you (top left). The journey to personal knowledge mastery is finding the right balance between seeking, sense-making, and sharing (top right). There are many possible practices in this quadrant, but each person must find his or her own way.

Kahoot provides a learning environment that is ideal for engaging students for it incorporates the precepts of both game-based learning and inquiry-based learning. Kahoot allows teachers to create quizzes and surreys that include a wide variety of multimedia elements such as videos, pictures and text. Computer mediated communication (CMC) offers new opportunities for learners to create communities of inquiry that allow for more active learning. This paper reports on the use of a Learning Management System (LMS) as a tool to facilitate students’ writing and critical thinking skills. The primary data for the study came from students’ online learning records and from discussion forum postings in the LMS. It was found that students’ motivation to learn was at a high level. Most importantly, student motivation was positively correlated with their learning behavior. Although male and female students did not differ in their motivation and learning behavior, messages in the writing forum indicated that female students had higher critical thinking skills than male students. “Explaining” messages appeared the most often, while “interpreting” messages appeared the least. The process of text-based online discussion in the forum had the potential to enhance the students’ writing skills, encourage their critical thinking, and help them write more systematically. The practical implications of these findings are discussed.

Of course KM supposedly helps organisations achieve their mission, be more effective in that endeavour, but KM focuses a lot (my expectation) on ever-learning, looking back to look forward, keeping track and avoiding to reinvent the wheel (though it’s sometimes ok), institutional memory curation, lessons learned, picking peoples’ brains and co-creating… so really KM is about developing a collective intelligence and finding ways to anticipate and prepare for what comes next, away from silver bullets, in the itchy corner of our brain where the next solution (trial) lies.
