Let’s dive directly into the world of educational apps. Our survey suggests that the majority — one might even say, the vast majority — of educational apps encourage pursuit of the goals and means of traditional education by digital means. They constitute convenient, neat, sometimes even seductive pathways to accomplish what were already goals in an earlier era: mastering concepts, learning arithmetical operations, identifying geographical locations or historical figures or key biological or chemical or physical processes. We could dub them “digital textbooks” or “lectures” or “pre-programmed educational conversations.” Decades ago, major behaviorist B. F. Skinner called for teaching machines that would automate the traditional classroom, allow students to proceed at their own rate, provide positive feedback on correct answers, and either repeat a missed item or present that item via another pathway. Those sympathetic to Skinner’s brand of psychology and to its associated educational regimen would easily recognize many apps today and would likely nod in approval at their slick, seductive interfaces.

En los centros educativos muchas veces se hace lo que se espera de ellos por tradición cultural, por costumbre…no porque sea necesario…se confía que las escuelas transmitan conocimientos a las generaciones más jóvenes. Son, sin embargo, también cada vez más criticadas para distribuir el así llamado conocimiento inerte, es decir, el conocimiento al que se accede sólo en un conjunto restringido de contextos a pesar de que es aplicable a una amplia variedad de dominios.

Mientras que lo que si deberíamos aprender se presenta de manera aislada, casi por sustitución del anterior o en el mejor de los casos como una alternativa, pero claro es dificil que se haga porque rompería el paradigma formal con el que estamos instalados por el predominio de otro informal, que en principio nos descoloca porque éste ni necesita de las organizaciones educativas, ni siquiera en muchas ocasiones de los docentes.

Digital mindset" seems to have become another buzzword--rather buzz-phrase to be grammatically precise--whenever the conversation (online or offline) veers toward social business, social learning, collaboration, and other 21st Century phenomenon in general. One of the oft-repeated reasons for the failure of Enterprise Social Networks (ESNs) in organizations is often attributed to a lack of "digital mindset" in the employees or leadership or both. It has become a specter looming over everyone's head. This post is an attempt to distill some of the skills/attitude/knowledge that possibly make up the "digital mindset". In an attempt to crystallize the skill sets, some of the finer nuances have been lost. It is also important to remember that there is no black and white distinction between digital and non-digital mindsets. It's a spectrum, and we need to move along the spectrum to make the best of the world we are in. The trigger for this post comes from a tweet-chat hosted by @WiproLPS with @bill_fischer sharing his insights on this topic. As eLearning professionals we want to take our students on a learning adventure where they come out on the other side brimming with knowledge, inspiration and staggering awe for their superhero-like trainer. Ok, maybe these goals might be a tad unrealistic. Even the best eLearning designers can sometimes drop the ball when it comes to training because we forget that what comes easily to us might not come easily to our students and maybe, just maybe we might even overestimate our students’ abilities and interest level.

In order to effectively train, we have to evaluate how we present information and make it easily accessible to both novice and expert learners. The trick is though; we can’t dumb down information to the point that it sounds condescending. Remember, at one point there was a time even you didn’t understand the techniques you are now training, keeping that in mind will help direct your training style.

At TeachThought, while we love Apple’s products, app ecology, and general aesthetic, we tend towards recommending Google for most classrooms. Though they’re not mutually exclusive, rare is the classroom that has the budget for Chromebooks and iPads. 1:1 is rare; 2:1 is rarer still.

Google Classroom is the result of Google bundling Google Calendar, Google Drive, Gmail, and other services into something simpler for teachers to use. We recently shared 60 ways to use google classroom, and it’s likely we’ll need to follow that post up with an updated version as Google continues to iterate their academic side.

We are in the decade a big data. During this second decade in the 21st century, many are grappling with the challenges and opportunity of massive data and the emergence of tools to mine and analyze these data. Within education, this is not new. It started long before No Child Left Behind, with the 20th century growth of modern educational psychology and measurement movements. From that era we saw IQ and aptitude testing, standardized and multiple choice tests, the Bell Curve, and countless efforts in quantifying almost anything about students: achievement, retention, reading proficiency, performance by demographic data, etc. While some of these ideas have a much longer history (China used proficiency exams for civil service already in 2200 B.C.), these certainly gained a new level of attention and importance over the last 150-175 years. Consider how things have changed, as explained by David McAruthur in his 1983 report, Educational Testing and Measurement: A Brief History.

There are many great reasons to keep your videos to 30 seconds, or less. I create a collection of short videos into a playlist for students. Say one piece of information and stop the video. In and out. Sometimes my videos are only 8 seconds!!

  • It is a lot easier to maintain enthusiasm and be interesting when it is only 30 seconds.
  • You say “um” and pause a lot less often since you are in and out.
  • It is easier to be comfortable on video for only 30 seconds.
  • Do not talk slow on a video. Students can replay if they need the information again. This helps you keep video short.
  • Do not repeat yourself on a video. Students can replay.
  • Title the video very specifically. With a short video the title says what the video says.
  • It is very hard to skim a video to find information. Short videos with specific titles make this possible.
  • Oftentimes we are just missing that “one” thing. Having to watch or try to scrub through even a 3 minute video can be hard.
  • It is really interesting to see the video analytics on a playlist of short videos. Some videos are watched a LOT and others, almost none at all.
  • If you need to update information or you make a mistake, you only have to replace a 30 second segment.
  • When a video corrupts, it is not that big of a deal to film it again.
  • Kids are willing to watch a 30 second video. They may not watch longer ones.
  • Makes it easier for students to learn on the go. They can watch a couple of quick video clips and pick up the rest later quite easily.

Recursos para Aprender. Esa es la tendencia. Una combinación de elementos de diferente tipología y procedencia que se “mezclan” de manera ágil y flexible en función de las necesidades y preferencias de los alumnos. Y que son accesibles separadamente para su consulta, cuando es necesario.

En las organizaciones, son recursos que pueden utilizarse en distintos contextos pero que tienen un foco principal y clarísimo: facilitar el aprendizaje con un modelo práctico y social. Aprender a realizar las tareas concretas del día a día, a enfrentarse a los problemas y ser resolutivo. Aprender de la experiencia de otros que están recorriendo el mismo camino que tú, en tu organización o en otras. Esto no es fácil conseguirlo con “cursos”, estructuras formales que necesitan planificación, diseño, impartición… y tiempo.

If you’ve had a chance to read my last blog you may have guessed that I have a general dislike for most formal education. In many countries the way that we teach children is out-dated, ineffective and instils the idea that without good grades you won’t be able to succeed in life. Since grades are primarily based on how well you can memorise facts, something that’s become more and more unnecessary as information becomes more accessible, they actually have very little to say about a person’s skill or ability. It’s widely agreed that the current education model doesn’t work, unfortunately trying to pass any type of education reform in the current school systems is an almost impossible task. This factor alone gives eLearning an advantage that standard teaching models can’t hope to match.

A new report by New Media Consortium and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative gives a five-year prediction for emerging edtech. Key findings include advancing cultures of change and innovation, with institutions adapting to a culture that embraces innovation and allows for more flexibility, creativity, and entrepreneurial thinking. The report also suggests there will be a growing focus on data-driven learning, measurement and assessment, with better tools for teaching, more targeting of at-risk students and more detailed student profiles. Another future trend identified in the report is development within Open Educational Resources (OER), with more instructional materials available for free, and being open in terms of ownership and usage rights.

Blended learning is another topic identified as a growth area, with students being given opportunities to learn in more flexible and alternative ways. Blended learning will provide easier delivery and access to learning materials, and provide alternatives to students who won’t be in the classroom every day. Classrooms will also evolve into spaces that encourage more collaborative interactions. Tools such as 3D printers, robotics, computers, laser cutting, and textiles will help contribute to these “makerspaces“.

Many students are already bringing their laptops and tablets to school, the model of Bring your own device (BYOD) is set to continue. Another trend identified in the report is the idea of a flipped classroom, which refers to “a model of learning that rearranges how time is spent both in and out of class, to shift the ownership of learning from the educators to the students.” Podcasts, videos and online textbooks help facilitate this model.

The incorporation of wearable technology in education is another area identified as a future trend; virtual reality devices are already being used to provide first-person perspectives in medical procedures, or to give virtual tours of campuses. Machine learning technologies can also be used as a tool that adapts to a student’s learning in real-time, providing personalized instruction and feedback. All of these tools will be synced to the web providing an “Internet of Things” (IoT) approach to learning, with teachers and students informed by crowdsourced, and location based information.
