10 ways to use Mobile Devices in the classroom

10 ways to use Mobile Devices in the classroom | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

It is pretty much a given these days that students have mobile phones, tablets, and e-readers. Leveraging what your students already have and already know how to use is a smart idea – even if you aren’t implementing a full-on BYOD classroom environment. There are probably hundreds of ways, if not more, to have students use their mobile devices in the classroom in a format geared towards learning rather than for leisure. The handy infographic below takes a look at ten fairly general ways to use devices in the classroom. The general nature of some of the recommendations makes it a great starting point if this is a newer concept for you or for a particular group that you’re working.

3 design guidelines to consider for mLearning

3 design guidelines to consider for mLearning | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

If you are looking to deploy to mobile devices, there are two major considerations; technical and design. While some of this discussion will relate indirectly to technological capabilities of devices, I have focused the majority of the blog on design considerations to think about when developing solutions that can be deployed on mobile devices. In a future blog I’ll dive more into the technology considerations such as which tools or languages should be used for the development.

[PDF] 7 things everyone should know about mLearning

[PDF] 7 things everyone should know about mLearning | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

As you can see from the title, this whitepaper by Dr. Naomi Norman is divided into seven sections, namely:

  • The business case for mobile learning
  • How to build a mobile learning strategy
  • What to do about all the different mobile devices
  • Whether to build your own mobile learning or commission bespoke
  • What’s unique about mobile learning design?
  • How to make mobile assessment work
  • How to publish your mobile learning

There are helpful statistics included here. Besides the numerical figures, what makes this a more compelling read is its organized structure, conciseness, smart use of images or visual elements, and, most importantly, comprehensive listing of resources.

You can complete this guide in less than half an hour. It's a short yet comprehensive introduction to the world of mobile learning.

Design considerations for mLearning

Design considerations for mLearning | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Have you ever used a mobile device to take an eLearning course that was originally designed for computer-based training? If so, how did you feel about the overall learning and user experience? I’m guessing it was nasty!

Designing learning and reference content for mobile devices requires planning, and assumes at least some knowledge of the target devices you are creating your content for. Viewing learning content on a tablet is very similar to viewing it on a laptop or desktop computer, but it becomes a very different experience when viewing it on a smartphone. The physical properties and the way the device is used, mean that tablets and smartphones have different requirements from each other. And of course tablets rely on a touchscreen rather than a keyboard and mouse so they in turn are used differently from desktop computers. Any well designed mobile learning content should consider these differences. If you plan to design for both tablets and smartphones, bear in mind that the smaller device is the one where the learning experience will suffer most without a suitable tailored design.
