Research: Using active learning more important than flipping the classroom

Research: Using active learning more important than flipping the classroom | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

An active learning approach produces the same student learning outcomes in both flipped and nonflipped classrooms, according to new research from Brigham Young University (BYU).

In the flipped classroom model, students watch video lectures outside of class time and participate in active learning activities during class time. The approach has been growing in popularity, so researchers at BYU decided to test its effectiveness.

MOOC-Supported Learning Communities for Future STEM Faculty

MOOC-Supported Learning Communities for Future STEM Faculty | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

I’m very pleased to announce that the free, seven-week, online course “An Introduction to Evidence-Based Undergraduate STEM Teaching” is now open for enrollment. The course is designed to provide graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) who are planning college and university faculty careers with an introduction to effective teaching strategies and the research that supports them. Although aimed at future STEM faculty, we expect that current STEM faculty will find the course interesting and useful, too.

What we’re planning is an extension of the local study groups that often form in conjunction with MOOCs. Since our primary audience for the course, STEM grad students and post-docs, can largely be found in clusters at research universities, we’re designing the MOOC to support and enhance local learning communities of MOOC participants. We’ll give those who facilitate these communities early access to the MOOC learning materials, as well as discussion questions and other activities they can use in their weekly meetings. Think “flipped classroom” lesson plans here, where the pre-class assignment is participation in the MOOC, and the weekly learning community meetings help MOOC participants go deeper with the material, applying it to their own teaching contexts.

The MOOC of One: Personal Learning Technologies (Stephen Downes)

What will it happen after the MOOC? How will they influence the next generation technology? Stephen Downes, who built the world's first MOOC software, describes the development of MOOC and examines the transition from the idea of the massive open online course to the personal learning environment.

While much attention has been paid in recent years to the massive numbers of students able to participate in open online learning, what is often overlooked is the capacity of individual learners to use open online learning to shape and design their own curriculum and pedagogy.

This talk will examine how open online learning puts the control of learning into the hands of learners, how educators will adapt with new learner-driven pedagogies and curriculum design, and the technical infrastructure supporting personal learning in a community and cooperative environment.

Megatrends in MOOCS: #5 Lifelong Learning

Megatrends in MOOCS: #5 Lifelong Learning | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

When Udacity’s Sebastian Thrun, Coursera’s Daphne Koller and Andrew Ng, and other education innovators decided to start putting courses from top universities online, for free, their idea was to make education accessible to everyone who wanted it, regardless of socioeconomic status, country, and other barriers to getting a traditional college education. What they may not have anticipated was that MOOCs would be such a huge hit with people who already had that traditional education—those already in the workforce who had gotten their degrees five, ten, or even twenty or more years earlier.

But that’s exactly what has happened. MOOCs have spurred a major trend toward lifelong learning. Companies are now experimenting with ways to harness their employees’ desire to learn to help their organizations succeed.

Last paragraph in the Excutive Summary:

"The greatest value of the disruptive education revolution led by MOOCs is that it is forcing universities to focus on their core competence for which they have long been revered and cherished. That core competence, to paraphrase Plutarch, is to kindle the fire to learn in young minds."
