Share your moments as a Moodle MOOCer @ WizIQ.

Dr. Nellie Deutsch's curator insight, June 3, 10:23 AM

I'd like you to think of the Moodle MOOC on WizIQ: http://www.wiziq.com/course/20705-teaching-with-moodle as an event that is taking place in a city or town, at a hotel, campus, in a building, in a neighborhood, or at a park/camping area. You may share images of how you visualize the Moodle MOOC.

You don't have to drive or walk from room to room, building to building or house to house. All you need to do is click, touch, push a button, use the keyboard, or give your computer or mobile device a voice or gesture command (if you have these). However, you will need to have access to the Internet and to a device to get you to the learning environments.

In week 1, you will be getting acquainted with each other, the layout of the course, and learning about your personal and professional needs as a learner and teacher.

There are 3 main learning environments on the MOOC:

WizIQ with the courseware for the live online sessions and recordings, for the content (tutorials) and coursefeed for ongoing discussions during and after the MOOC). Google Drive (interactive syllabus is also available on WizIQ)
Moodle experience is available on http://moodle4teachers.org/ with 3 separate Moodle experience courses and conversations (see below) organized for each of the weeks (topics of Moodle MOOC)
Moodle practice for teacher role, manager role, and administrator role is available on http://www.integrating-technology.com/moodle
You are invited to join the conversations on the frontpage of moodle4teachers.org:

Conversation on Moodle Layout (Activities, Resources, Blocks):http://moodle4teachers.org/mod/forum/view.php?f=17
Conversation on Creating Engaging Activities: http://moodle4teachers.org/mod/forum/view.php?f=18

Dr. Nellie Deutsch's insight:

Subject: Tasks for Moodle MOOC on WizIQ for June 2013

Message: Dear Members of Moodle MOOC on WizIQ,

Congratulations on doing an awesome job asking questions in week 1. Hope you got some answers, too.

Many participants have been anxious to know what's ahead so here are the tasks for weeks 1-4. You may access them on the interactive syllabus and ask questions or add comments on the syllabus.

Tasks for Weeks 1-4: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-yrsOH1uHYdqJqvfYHjQ-KDszWkOp_dyOYphLPAoSNc/edit#heading=h.so6a5xl84772

Task for Week 1
Questions are important to learning. I follow the KWHL method of acquiring information. The idea behind the method is for participants to learn about what they know and decide what they wish to learn.

You will create a chart and plot what you know, what you want to learn, how and where you will get the information, and summarize what you learned. You then go back and list what you know, what you would still want to learn and so on. Learning is ongoing and so is the KWHL process.

Please share the task for week 1 here: http://moodle4teachers.org/mod/forum/view.php?id=74

You may do it during week 2 or work at your own pace. Here's a tutorial for the task for week one and how your're going to work throughout the course: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=HWrRSsx9XIU

Task for Week 2
In week 2, participants will learn about and create engaging activities for other teachers in the MOOC. Please team up and learn about your fellow Moodlers' students and how to create engaging activities for them. The task for week 2 is to demonstrate the activity you learned in real time. Yes, you will be teaching and recording/video tapping yourself as you do. This is not an "about" task. It is the real thing. You may work in teams and co-teach the activity.

Please share the task for week 2 here: http://moodle4teachers.org/mod/forum/view.php?id=73

Task for Week 3
In week 3, participants will learn about and demonstrate how to teach and learn online. The task of the week is to conduct a literature study on teaching and learning online. Participants will create an interactive digital artifact of their findings.

Please share the task for week 3 here: http://moodle4teachers.org/mod/forum/view.php?id=76

Task for Week 4
In week 4, participants will explore and teach in a live virtual class using the WizIQ plugin activity directly from Moodle. Here’s a video tutorial on WizIQ activity on the Moodle and how to schedule and teach a virtual class. You may practise using the WizIQ plugin activity in the following Moodle course called WizIQ Practice Area. Here’s more about WizIQ plugin activity on Moodle.

Participants will also be able to schedule a WizIQ activity on the managers course (M4M).

The task of the final week is to schedule a live class, add content, teach, and share the recording for feedback from the participants. You may invite friends and colleagues to your session.

Please share the task for week 4 here: http://moodle4teachers.org/mod/forum/view.php?id=77

Please access the interactive syllabus, ask question and add your comments to it:https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-yrsOH1uHYdqJqvfYHjQ-KDszWkOp_dyOYphLPAoSNc/edit?usp=sharing

Jeroen Bottema's curator insight, May 14, 7:18 AM

"I’ve been teaching online using both synchronous and asynchronous modes since 2004. The live online class connects my students and me for learning on a personal level and not just for information sharing. Enthusiasm is a key attitude in getting students to believe and trust the teacher online and face-to-face, but specifically online. There may be technical issues during the class. The only way to keep the students focused regardless of the technical issues is to encourage and create an atmosphere of trust. The teacher’s enthusiasm will facilitate and help the participants engage in what’s important; learning."

Dr. Nellie Deutsch's insight:

WizIQ live virtual class is free for educators. It is great for e-learning, conducting meetings and webinars, streaming face-to-face conferences and campus-based classes, preparing videos for the flipped classroom and for blended learning, and as a course management system. The interface comes in 14 languages and it can be customized to suit your needs. I have been using it since 2007 and have never looked back.

Dr. Nellie Deutsch's insight:

WizIQ was quite a hit at the TESOL Dallas conventions as teachers were impressed by the fact that the virtual class was like a real class but with a huge difference. Many teachers are finding students in campus-based classes hard to manage since students are more interested in their cells and in socializing with their friends than in what the teachers have to say. I pointed out that one solution on how to get students engaged and motivated in what the teacher had to say was to give WizIQ live online classes because teachers have more control than in a physical classroom. You can get a one-year free premium account worth $190 so take advantage of the offer: http://www.wiziq.com/academic/?gid=100041
