Building a Culture of Continuous Learning for Teachers

Building a Culture of Continuous Learning for Teachers | Edulateral | Scoop.it
We’re all familiar with the traditional model of professional development: an outside consultant comes in during the summer or at the beginning of the school year, spends a few hours or a couple of days introducing the new program or initiative, and leaves teachers with a stack of implementation materials.

And then teachers go back to the classroom, put the materials on the shelf beside the materials from last year’s new initiative, and go back to teaching the same way they always have.

It’s no mystery why this model for PD doesn’t spark lasting change in classroom practice. The mystery is why we ever expected it to in the first place.

The truth is, teachers, much like their students, need more than a one-shot lecture to master and apply new material. Effective professional development takes place within a continuous “Cycle of Learning” that includes targeted instruction, planning, application, and assessment.

There are good points made in the article. For example, the current model of teacher education is based on delivery of theory, often as a one time venture and teachers figuring out the practical on their own.

There is no mention of teacher voice and choice in the article. When I have a choice and express that choice in my voice, I want to learn what is being offered. Too often, it is voice and choice that is missing. We do not build cultures. They form.

Note Taking Skills for 21st century students

Note Taking Skills for 21st century students | Edulateral | Scoop.it
Ever since I went through the Writing Across the Curriculum Course at my school I realized the tremendous gap between “writing” as we’ve taught it traditionally and 21st century writing skills. That frustration threw me into research about how to teach writing in my classroom (all of that research was then put into my new book Reinventing Writing — just because I couldn’t find the book I needed when I was struggling with teaching writing in the digital age.)

The key to Innovative Assessments in eLearning

The key to Innovative Assessments in eLearning | Edulateral | Scoop.it

Assessments can be carried out both as part of on-going teaching and eLearning activities in the year (formative assessment) as well as at the end of certain predetermined points during the academic year (summative assessment). Assessment is, thus, not only a way of measuring the progress of individual students, but also a way of measuring how well the institution/area’s educational programs are working and whether they are successful in fulfilling the instructional goals, at the state and national level.

Innovative assessments are the need of the hour. Traditional assessments have not been completely succeeding at providing meaningful results as students have resorted to methods such as learning by rote, which defeats the purpose. Traditional assessment thus measures the amount you have learned by rote and does not really help in gauging the understanding and learning of a lesson. In fact, reports show that traditional assessment through standardized tests promotes drill and practice, promotes rote learning, discourages inquiry based learning, and omitting content which may not be testable on the current test format. Thus, it encourages testing of a small breadth of content. By developing new and innovative assessments in eLearning, teachers can evaluate students better; students may feel motivated to word hard on their grades instead of asking others "could you write my essay for me please"?

Projects Vs Project Based Learning: What is the difference?

Projects Vs Project Based Learning: What is the difference? | Edulateral | Scoop.it
All of these resources make sense on the surface, however many teachers fail to recognise that Project Based Learning is a process of sustained and deep inquiry. Rooted in the cognitive architecture of how the brain works and how humans learn. Without fully understanding this process our greatest intentions often result in engaging learning experiences for students, where deep learning fails to prosper.
