GHO4EDU is a collection of GHO that anyone can replicate. The idea is to demonstrate what others have already successfully done, then incorporate the best parts into your own GHO.

Of particular interest to faculty is the professional development GHO, where you can envision taking HR mandatory training up a notch! Further, connecting peer to peer across the spectrum of your specific discipline is a great way to initiate and then foster collaboration and professional networking.

Well worth the read!

Schools in Finland will no longer teach 'subjects' | EDUcation CHANGE | Teaching by Topic

Schools in Finland will no longer teach 'subjects' | EDUcation CHANGE | Teaching by Topic | EduInfo | Scoop.it

For years, Finland has been the by-word for a successful education system, perched at the top of international league tables for literacy and numeracy.

.

Pasi Silander, the city’s development manager, explained: “What we need now is a different kind of education to prepare people for working life.

.

“Young people use quite advanced computers. In the past the banks had lots of  bank clerks totting up figures but now that has totally changed.

.

“We therefore have to make the changes in education that are necessary for industry and modern society.”

.

Subject-specific lessons – an hour of history in the morning, an hour of geography in the afternoon – are already being phased out for 16-year-olds in the city’s upper schools. They are being replaced by what the Finns call “phenomenon” teaching – or teaching by topic. For instance, a teenager studying a vocational course might take “cafeteria services” lessons, which would include elements of maths, languages (to help serve foreign customers), writing skills and communication skills.

.

More academic pupils would be taught cross-subject topics such as the European Union - which would merge elements of economics, history (of the countries involved), languages and geography.

.

María Florencia Perrone's curator insight, April 8, 4:00 PM

The world around us is not labelled or divided in categories, then why is academic content? Can we not relate topics and elaborate meaning on the basis of relationships and intertwined data?

Helen Teague's curator insight, April 13, 9:11 PM

I wonder if this would work in the U.S.? Also, in Finland, students do not take standardized tests until the end of high school (Zhao, 2012, p. 111), so thankfully, perhaps the drill and kill process is diminished.

Create a quiz in PowerPoint

Create a quiz in PowerPoint | EduInfo | Scoop.it

Did you know that you can create a quiz in PowerPoint? You can create a simple quiz in PowerPoint using just hyperlinks. It’s simple because it doesn’t require any programming and you can’t grade it.

Students take the quiz in Slide Show view. When they choose the wrong answer, they go back to the question to try again. When they choose the right answer, they go to the next question.

Blended Learning at MIT

David Bramley's curator insight, July 6, 12:47 PM

This post is from 2012, but I guess MIT would want to claim they were ahead of the game!

I like it because it looks at a definition of blended learning and poses design questions.  But I particularly like the, 'Pre-course - Course - Post-course model it suggests, with the Course element having face-to-face interaction.  Looking at blended design in this way can help answer the question:  What is the best use of the face-to-face time I have available?

Dr. Laura Sheneman's curator insight, June 2, 9:14 AM

A reading transformation can occur in your school much like it has in my classroom, replacing fear and dread with excitement and self-expression. Students will read if they choose the books. They will write with voice and clarity if they have the ability to express their thoughts. They can change from reluctant to inspired readers if it happens on their own terms. All you have to do is flip the experience, turning the practice of reading on its head by making them the creators of their own learning.

Elaine J Roberts, Ph.D.'s curator insight, March 6, 1:32 PM

Schools are going to change; in fact, they are changing and many have changed and mostly because of the ways they have adopted technology and integrated new ways of learning. When I read something like this, I'm even more alarmed for schools that seem to have so little. I worry about how their teachers will learn about variations on such resources and how they will help their students compensate for the lack of direct experience with just the edges of some of these developing opportunities of the future.
