Promoting media literacy education i China: a case study of a primary school

"With the changing media environment, media literacy education is an emerging field in China. Many studies have shown the significance of media literacy education, but they have mostly been conducted in the Western context, and there have been a few studies investigating media literacy education in the Asian context. Based on this understanding, this study aimed to explore the implementation of, and approaches to, media literacy education in a Chinese primary school. It aimed to shift media literacy education from an international context to a local setting, and offers a point of reference to enrich the theory and practice of the process of localisation. The research questions focused on how media literacy education was initiated in the context of the national curriculum reform in mainland, and two ways in which it was implemented in a primary school. It was a qualitative case study, using observation, interview, focus groups, group meetings and document analysis as the main methods of collecting data in the field."

Media Literacy for Older People facing the Digital Divide

Media Literacy for Older People facing the Digital Divide | Educommunication | Scoop.it

«This paper proposes a number of new methodological approaches to tackle the design of digital literacy programs for older people based on criteria such as degree of autonomy and the possibilities for enjoying everyday life, proposing the development of programs based on contextualism, incrementalism, motivation and absorption processes.»

“O ciberbullying atinge todas as classes sociais”

“O ciberbullying atinge todas as classes sociais” | Educommunication | Scoop.it

THE POWER OF WORDS: INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY:  This year on December 10 we will be celebrating 65th International Human Rights Day, the remarkable day when in 1948 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This was the first time in the history of humanity when the real value and importance of human rights were globally recognized while setting “a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction”.

Journal of Games Criticism - inaugural issue

" In the last few decades, video games have reached audiences that rival the size of other mass media audiences, establishing themselves as having genuine cultural impact along with television and film.  On one hand, the impetus to treat them as such is still in its infancy, but, on the other hand, video games studies have an expanding presence online in the form of blogs.

The Journal of Games Criticism (JGC) is a non-profit, peer-reviewed, open-access journal which aims to respond to these cultural artifacts by extending the range of authors to include both traditional academics and popular bloggers. The journal strives to be a producer of feed-forward approaches to video games criticism with a focus on influencing gamer culture, the design and writing of video games, and the social understanding of video games and video games criticism."

Young Canadians' Life Online Full Report

"This report is drawn from a national survey of Canadian youth conducted by MediaSmarts in 2013. The classroom-based survey of 5,436 students in grades 4 through 11, in every province and territory, examined the role of networked technologies in young people’s lives. Life Online (the first in a series of reports from the survey) focuses on what youth are doing online, what sites they’re going to, their attitudes towards online safety, household rules on Internet use and unplugging from digital technologies."

In networks, cooperation trumps collaboration | Harold Jarche

In networks, cooperation trumps collaboration | Harold Jarche | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"Real network models are new modes, not modifications of the old ones, and cooperation is how work gets done. Some examples:

Wirearchy: a dynamic multi-way flow of power and authority based on information, knowledge, trust and credibility, enabled by interconnected people and technology.

Heterarchies are networks of elements in which each element shares the same “horizontal” position of power and authority, each playing a theoretically equal role [wikipedia].

Chaordic refers to a system of governance that blends characteristics of chaos and order. The term was coined by Dee Hock the founder and former CEO of the VISA credit card association [wikipedia]."

Howard Rheingold's curator insight, January 24, 2014 7:08 PM

Once again, Harold Jarche sees deeply into the intersection of human thought, network dynamics, and the power of augmentation by digital media. The use of powerful individual media, from smartphones to laptops to wearables, and global digital networks is only part of the picture of augmented collective intelligence. Understanding the different forms of collective action, their motivations and limitations, is key. Understanding the differences between cooperation and collaboration, hierarchies and heterarchies, for example.
