"MediaSmarts and the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF) are pleased to announce that marketing and consumerism will be the focus of Canada’s eighth annual Media Literacy Week, to be held November 4-8, 2013.

The official theme of the week: “What’s Being Sold: Helping Kids Make Sense of Marketing Messages”, will encourage educators and parents to talk to children and teens about the marketing they encounter on a daily basis."

"This study of media literacy education at all levels of the educational system considered faculty perceptions of student media literacy competencies, the extent to which media literacy is addressed in class, and the extent to which faculty members consider media literacy education to be important. Data suggest that despite the research and policy focus on media literacy at the K-12 level, educators reported addressing media literacy competencies most frequently within higher education. Results also suggested that training and experience, not youth or digital nativity, are the factors that lead to an interest in teaching about media literacy among faculty."

C’est une des questions que se pose Torbjörn von Krogh, dans un article qui se veut le prolongement de sa thèse de doctorat de l’université Mid Sweden, consacrée à l’imputabilité des médias suisses.

Dans cet article, il étudie surtout l’évolution du traitement de la question de l’imputabilité des médias par l’État suisse, avant d’évoquer le rôle de plus en plus visible du public à ce sujet."

"MILID Scientific Journal is a science journal co-published by the Journalism and Communication Sciences Department of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and Tsinghua University. This scientific journal is one of the collaborative actions carried out under "The UNESCO-UNAOC University Network on Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue (MILID)"

MILID will publish scientific articles in the fields of media and information literacy and intercultural dialogue from an always social and a cultural viewpoint and following the theoretical and methodological approaches. Book reviews will also be published in MILID issues.

MILID will especially value articles from competitive research projects, with a clear articulation of theory and methodology, a well-defined and up-to-date theoretical framework, and which are proposed as a significant contribution to their subject area and field."

Bringing the World to School: Integrating News and Media Literacy in Elementary Classrooms

"For three years, a flagship university-school partnership program developed a multifaceted approach to integrate news and current events into in-school and after-school instruction in K-6 schools. Three case studies detailing the program’s impact on an undergraduate novice instructor, an in-school technology mentor, and an experienced classroom teacher illustrate the ways in which different stakeholders at the school approached news integration. Though approaches, interests, and values of each teacher varies considerably, all teachers share a commitment to the following classroom principles: (1) the use of inquiry to guide lesson development; (2) the role of ambiguity and uncertainty in otherwise structured learning environments; (3) the use of scaffolding and planning to limit and shape students’ experiences with a variety of unpredictable media texts in the classroom; and (4) written reflection on how individual teacher values and motivations contribute to the unique classroom culture. Implications for future professional development in K-6 news literacy are explored.
