Why middle class are unplugging their kids | Educommunication | Scoop.it
New York plans to build one the largest municipal Wi-Fi networks in the world, delivering Internet access to poorer areas and, Mayor de Blasio boasts, “bridging the digital divide.”
Setting aside how serious that gap really is — every fifth-grader I see, no matter what neighborhood they live in, has a smartphone — is this really the divide we should be worried about?

Integrating technology into the classroom can be motivating, exciting and rewarding for both students and teachers.  It can also be scary and uncomfortable to try something new.  Teachers who hesitate to use technology in the classroom may not realize, however, that doing so does not mean abandoning what has worked for them in the past.

Libro - Generaciones y Tecnología

Libro - Generaciones y Tecnología | Educommunication | Scoop.it

In particular, we examined whether internet use and engagement in several different types of social activities might help older adults to maintain health literacy.

Today, I am happy to be sharing with you some reflections on many of those same issues from two of the Next Generation leaders of the Media Literacy Movement.
Belinha S. De Abreu, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Technology at Fairfield University, currently serves as the Vice President for the National Telemedia Council. Paul Mihailidis, an assistant professor in the school of communication at Emerson College, is the Associate Director of the Engagement Lab at Emerson College, and Director of the Salzburg Academy on Media and Global Change. Mihailidis sits on the board of directors for the National Association of Media Literacy Education. Together, they have edited an important new anthology, Media Literacy Education in Action: Theoretical and Pedagogical Approaches, which offers us a snap shot of Today’s media literacy movement.

Protecting your child's digital identity | Digital CitizenShip | eSkills

Protecting your child's digital identity | Digital CitizenShip | eSkills | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Child identity theft is considered to be one of the fastest-growing crimes. Kids’ identities are stolen over 50 times more than those of adults! We’re often so focused protecting our kids from so many threats in the real world; we forget that in cyberspace bad guys are stealing children’s identities to open credit cards, apply for loans, rent homes and even receive health care. Bad guys make money by selling and reselling the same child’s identity over and over. And they get away with it because parents don’t think about monitoring their son or daughter’s identity.

Why is this important? Children could potentially lose out on future jobs, internships and loans that require a clean background check or credit report—all because they were victims of identity theft as kids. That’s a future I’m trying to help my daughters avoid. Growing up in the real world is difficult enough that I don’t want their digital lives to hold them back.

Did you know that children's identity is stolen over 50 times more than adults? I had no idea until reading this article. People who steal children's identity use their information to open credit cards, apply for loans, and this can affect kids ability to gain jobs in the future as a result. One day these children will be the future of America so it is vital that actions are taken by parents to ensure that their children are being safe online, and that no one is taking advantage of them.

Maximising the opportunities for kids online

Maximising the opportunities for kids online | Educommunication | Scoop.it
In commenting on Ofcom’s 2014 Children and Parents: Media Use and Attitudes report, I argued that children are still not gaining many of the benefits of the digital age – partly because we don’t know what we want for them (or what they want for themselves); we do not as a society provide enough varied, imaginative and yet child-friendly resources for them; and often children or their parents and teachers do not know what is or could be available to them.

Explaining Tragedy in the News to Kids

Explaining Tragedy in the News to Kids | Educommunication | Scoop.it

«talking to children about tragedy in the news […] to help our children cope with traumatic news events, such as a natural disaster, a plane crash, or a terrorist attack. In today’s world, there’s no hiding from the media, but there are ways to share information about the news, and help kids manage any fear or anxiety. From discussing the facts, to offering them comfort by seeing the good in a story, you can moderate the media’s effect on your child. […] Media literacy is an important component of the language program in the Ontario curriculum, and they are learning it at school, starting in grade 1.»
