The Prestige Cartoon – 'Rick and Morty'

The Prestige Cartoon – 'Rick and Morty' | Educommunication | Scoop.it

" (...)  the first season of Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty, likely the best single season of any American cartoon since The Simpsons Season Four. The show is Simpsons-esque in its core sitcom simplicity, but with a buddy comedy spin: we meet the Smith family — mother (Beth; Sarah Chalke), father (Jerry; Chris Parnell), teenage daughter (Summer; Spencer Grammer), pubescent son (Morty; Justin Roiland), and live-in maternal grandfather, mad scientist, inventor, and interdimensional traveler (Rick; also Justin Roiland). Is E-Reading to Your Toddler Story Time, or Simply Screen Time?

Is E-Reading to Your Toddler Story Time, or Simply Screen Time? | Educommunication | Scoop.it
For years, child development experts have advised parents to read to their children early and often, citing studies showing its linguistic, verbal and social benefits. In June, the American Academy of Pediatrics advised doctors to remind parents at every visit that they should read to their children from birth, prescribing books as enthusiastically as vaccines and vegetables.

On the other hand, the academy strongly recommends no screen time for children under 2, and less than two hours a day for older children.

At a time when reading increasingly means swiping pages on a device, and app stores are bursting with reading programs and learning games aimed at infants and preschoolers, which bit of guidance should parents heed?

Competences in media education: general framework

Competences in media education: general framework | Educommunication | Scoop.it

«The goal of media education is to develop numerous competences in learners. These competences support them in performing a number of tasks related to a variety of media objects (cameras, internet sites, books, blackboards, road signs, etc.). These tasks will be necessary for them to partake and grow in today’s media landscape in the following manner : critically, responsibly, creatively, autonomously, and well prepared for life in society1. The sum of competences linked to media usage can be coined with the new term “media literacy”».

Generation E: Young European expats laying the foundations for Europe's future social fabric | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Every year, thousands of young southern Europeans pack up and leave their native Spain, Portugal, Greece or Italy. They change nation-state in search of new jobs and opportunities. The process is made easier by their countries’ status as parties to the Schengen Convention, permitting free movement of their citizens within 26 European countries. Jessica Sparks reports.

OFCOM report: one in three children aged 5-15 in the UK now has their own tablet

"The report shows one in three children aged 5-15 in the UK now has their own tablet computer, which has nearly doubled in a year (34%, up from 19%).

Twice as many children are using a tablet to go online (42% versus 23% in 2013), while, for the first time, the proportion of children accessing the internet on a PC, laptop or netbook decreased (88%, down from 91% in 2013)

A sharp increase in ownership among very young children means more than one in 10 children aged 3-4 now own their own tablet (11%, up from 3% in 2013)."

5 Great Online Tools for Creating Infographics

5 Great Online Tools for Creating Infographics | Educommunication | Scoop.it

Professional infographic designers rely primarily on a core vector graphics software program to create their infographics designs. The main advantage is that all the icons, charts, images, illustrations, and data visualizations are treated as separate objects that can be easily moved, resized, overlapped, and rotated.

How Videogames Like Minecraft Actually Help Kids Learn to Read | WIRED | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Brecht Vandenbroucke Minecraft is the hot new videogame among teachers and parents. It's considered genuinely educational: Like an infinite set of programmable Lego blocks, it's a way to instill spatial reasoning, math, and logic—the skills beloved by science and technology educators. But from what I've seen, it also teaches something else: good old-fashioned reading and…
