Toward a More Substantive Media Ecology: Postman’s Metaphor Versus Posthuman Futures

Toward a More Substantive Media Ecology: Postman’s Metaphor Versus Posthuman Futures | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"The metaphor of “ecology,” common in vernacular and academic discourse about communication media, can inhibit substantively ecological thinking about communication.  While some have attributed the currency of this metaphor to Marshall McLuhan, I argue that this criticism is better directed at Neil Postman, who helped popularize McLuhan under the banner of “media ecology.”  I outline the need for substantively ecological thinking, sketch its ontological and ethical contours, and illustrate the ubiquity of a more metaphorical use of “ecology” as applied to communication media.  I then discuss Postman and some of his intellectual heirs, linking their dualistic thinking to a metaphorical conception, which I argue inhibits full appreciation of interrelations among humans, our cultures and technologies, and the more-than-human world."

Being Critically Reflective - What does it mean?

Being Critically Reflective - What does it mean? | Educommunication | Scoop.it

The terms 'critical' and 'reflection' are sorely misunderstood in education. Being critical is often misinterpreted as being negative. 'Reflection' is also frequently distorted to mean "reflect on what you are doing wrong". Too often the students that we teach give negative feedback when asked to be critical. So to counter act this, educators initiate strategies such as '2 stars and a wish' and SWNI (strengths, weaknesses, new ideas).
These strategies are designed to make reflective practices a more positive experience for students. It teaches them that being critically reflective is not just a negative activity, that it is important to be positive and give feedback to help improve or make something better.

Ecological Literacy: Ecosystems, Patterns, and Society (Part 1)

Part 1: Introduction to Interconnectedness and Cyclicity"Being ecologically literate means understanding the principles of organization of ecological communities (ecosystems) and using those principles for creating sustainable human communities.” -Capra, The Web of Life, 297

One can easily make the argument that the lack of true connection, or even more so, the lack of interconnection, is one of the most ubiquitous conditions of the human experience in contemporary Western society.

What Dead Poets Society Taught Me About Being a Teacher

What Dead Poets Society Taught Me About Being a Teacher | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"Students don't care what you know if they don't know you care. Mr. Keating's students loved him because he was interested in them. He delighted in their successes. He laughed with them (near them, not at them). He truly saw them. And that's pretty much what every kid we teach wants -- to be seen and be noticed."

Manuel Pinto's insight:

They felt like persons, not only like students. But you need time to pay attention and discover every person who lives in every student. How is it possible with 70 or more in front of you, once a week?

How Robin Williams Inspired a Generation to Seize the Day

How Robin Williams Inspired a Generation to Seize the Day | Educommunication | Scoop.it

“Williams seemed to believe that movies could change the world, that by revealing his own flaws and those of the characters he played, we might learn to be better people. I happen to agree. He changed mine, even if I could barely find the words to convey that when I finally got the chance to meet him, briefly, at the press junkets for ‘Insomnia’ and ‘Death to Smoochy’.”

Net Neutrality, Algorithmic Filtering and Ferguson (USA)

Net Neutrality, Algorithmic Filtering and Ferguson (USA) | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"

Ferguson is about many things, starting first with race and policing in America.

But it’s also about internet, net neutrality and algorithmic filtering.

It’s a clear example of why “saving the Internet”, as it often phrased, is not an abstract issue of concern only to nerds, Silicon Valley bosses, and few NGOs. It’s why “algorithmic filtering” is not a vague concern.

It’s a clear example why net neutrality is a human rights issue; a free speech issue; and an issue of the voiceless being heard, on their own terms."
