Rethinking how to do and what to do in libraries for teens

Rethinking how to do and what to do in libraries for teens | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"Nothing is as it was just a decade ago when it comes to libraries and teens. The changes that we see are partly a result of the technology that is a part of teen lives every day of their lives. If teens no longer have to visit the library to find information and to check-out materials for pleasure based reading, what is the role of library teen services? A role still exists but it is a role that requires library staff working with teens to focus not on the physical book or article but instead focus on the way to connect teens with what they need no matter where they are. Library staff need to mentor teens to help them gain skills and knowledge that connects with personal and educational interests. And, anyone working with teens needs to be able to create flexible welcoming environments that are available for teens to connect, create, collaborate."

Michael Wesch: How the Internet has changed us

Michael Wesch: How the Internet has changed us | Educommunication | Scoop.it

Michael Wesch is a cultural anthropologist exploring the effects of new media on society and culture. He spoke to a group at the Playhouse Theatre:

"I think we are really doing a disservice to them at the moment. I believe very strongly in students being able to read and write very well but I think we need to expand what we mean by reading and writing to include these new media forms. And we need a level of media literacy that includes a sophistication about how to use what media form, when, why and also when to shut it all and to have a moment to really think through it all properly."

Average student checks phone 11 times per day while in class | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"Barney McCoy, an associate professor of broadcasting, embarked upon his study after launching his teaching career seven years ago and noticing the instructional challenges presented by students' digital devices.

From the front of his classroom on multimedia, he often saw the smart phones creeping out.

The view from the back of a classroom while a colleague taught Mass Media Principles was equally telling.

"They've got their laptops open, but they're not always taking notes. Some might have two screens open-Facebook and their notes," McCoy said."

Empowering Young Girls through Social and Media Literacy Education

Empowering Young Girls through Social and Media Literacy Education | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"During my research I felt tremendously inspired watching young girls (age 8-11) talking about their media experiences and I became more and more intrigued by their different ways of perceiving and expressing femininity, observing and hearing their stories, their reality of living in a media world saturated by images and messages which constantly suggest girls to act in a certain way.

From advertising to TV programs, from videogames to magazines, from songs’ lyrics to music videos, the emphasis is relentlessly on showing off a good-looking and sexy outer shell, when there is so much more in every girl to be nurtured and cherished.

Perhaps the most important thing that I learned from my micro-cosmo of young girls is that they learn from very young age that a girl/woman is appreciated by society mostly on the basis of her look & sexiness."

"Ceci tuera cela ?

| Educommunication | Scoop.it

MIL vs IL at the European Conference on Information Literacy (ECIL)

MIL vs IL at the European Conference on Information Literacy (ECIL) | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"To illustrate, Ralph asked us which was the broader term - information or media literacy. Most of the room thought 'information', but he said doing the same at a media literacy conference brought back the opposite result. All well and good, but I think this approach is seriously mistaken."

Manuel Pinto's insight:

Another point of view:

"Albert had participated in a number of the UNESCO-sponsored meetings on Media and Information Literacy, and he increasingly felt that it made sense to work with the media literacy people, with whom IL people had a lot of common interests.
Therefore he has taken on the term of MIL as an umbrella concept. He sees it as a dynamic container concept. He defined it as a lifelong learning competence, with associated attitudes, skills and knowledge."
