Conceptualizing ‘Critical Media Health Literacy’

In Canada, as elsewhere, there is considerable concern about adolescents’ health. Much of the blame is thought to lie in the social context for today’s adolescents and their interaction with and dependence on various media. Yet, it is not clear whether and how adolescents learn to engage critically with media messages about health. Emerging from the authors’ previous work in conceptualizing and measuring adolescent health literacy, this article presents the results of a conceptual analysis process using the terms health literacy, critical health literacy, media literacy, critical media literacy, media activism, and critical viewing among others—to arrive at the unique construct of critical media health literacy (CMHL).

Too much information and not enough of it

Too much information and not enough of it | Educommunication | Scoop.it
How is it that, at the mention of big news, people’s first instinct would be to turn, not to a trusted media outlet, but to Google?

We’ve reached a point where we have both too much information and not enough of it — and where the audience for news is clearly jaded.

The Facebook Phenomenon | Educommunication | Scoop.it

Telematics and Informatics | Vol 30, Iss 1, Pgs 1-60,

Though Facebook is only in its adolescence, the organization seems to grow by leaps and bounds. The essays in the special issue where chosen because they contribute unique insights into the way Facebook is used, and the way it has begun to change social behavior. The authors capture Facebook’s unique characteristics and historically situate their positions to provide an understanding of the impact of Facebook, and the way it has the power and potential to change the way we do things.

The Pedagogy of Critical Enjoyment: Teaching and Reaching the Hearts and Minds of Adolescent Learners Through Media Literacy

The Pedagogy of Critical Enjoyment: Teaching and Reaching the Hearts and Minds of Adolescent Learners Through Media Literacy Education, by Theresa Anne Redmond

in JMLE, Vol 4, No 2

While there is consensus regarding the definition of media literacy, classroom-based studies of media literacy education in action are few and research that investigates how teachers implement media literacy in practice are needed, including information about why it is taught, what is taught, and how it is taught. Through a purposefully selected case of media literacy at the middle level, this study analyzes three veteran teachers’ media literacy practice identifying critical enjoyment as a fresh approach to media literacy education that moves beyond the purposes of protection, preparation, and appreciation.

Jacques Ellul and philosophy of technology, on the centenary of his birth

Jacques Ellul and philosophy of technology, on the centenary of his birth | Educommunication | Scoop.it

“People see him as just a bringer of bad news, but the two most important things in his writing aren’t taken into account. One is the comprehensiveness of his explanation of the technological phenomenon. The second is his powerful moral concern. Those two aspects of Ellul’s thought are not as influential as I’d like them to be.”

“Technology becomes our fate only when we treat it as sacred,” says Darrell J. Fasching, a professor emeritus of religious studies at the University of South Florida. “And we tend to do that a lot.”
