When fiction’s sold as fact

While misinformation isn’t new, it’s more serious now because the information ecosystem has changed dramatically.

In the echo chamber, everyone’s an expert simply because they look something up on the Internet. Like-minded individuals talk among themselves, reinforcing their beliefs. Anything that supports that belief catches on like wildfire, he says, explaining how in a post-truth world, fake news can influence millions.

(An echo chamber is an insular communication space where everyone agrees with the information and more often than not, no outside input is allowed.)

Fake news causes fear and panic, delegitimises leaders, divides societies, endangers lives and brings mistrust to the process of democracy, he says. Citing an example, he shared how a video of Muslims celebrating a cricket match victory was used to feed public anger after the 2015 Paris terror attacks.

“It only took the click of a button to change the title of the video, which went on to generate half a million views in two hours.”

Stop-motion to Foster Digital Literacy in Elementary School

"Although digital media literacy is recognized as providing the essential competencies required for living in a new media age, it has only just started to gain focus just starts to gain focus in Taiwan's elementary education. one of the reasons is examination-oriented education, which diverts scarce resources away from this informal learning. The other reason is that educators tend to think of digital media education as a series of purely technical operations, which might lead student digital media learning to mindless work. Therefore, this study designed a media exhibition based on Kolb's experiential learning model for teaching students concepts of stop-motion films and techniques of film production. A design experiment involved 247 third-grade elementary students who were grouped to visit the experiential exhibition. The findings suggest that the students have improved their knowledge of stop-motion films. Analysis of produced films by students also shows that they have improved their media ability to represent their ideas and communicate with others. Through the analysis of the influence of demographics on the knowledge test, the findings revealed that the experiential exhibition is more effective for female elementary students and students' relevant previous experiences may not affect their acquired knowledge. given those results and observations, we believe that the proposed experiential exhibition is a promising way to carry out digital media literacy education in elementary schools"

Media AND Information Literacy: Evolving Together

"There is no substitute for talking with librarians and community leaders to catch the sense of excitement and promise around the virtual - and physical - reinvention of libraries. In every setting, whether in an academic library or a public library, a maker space or a study space, libraries are actively seeking out new ways to serve patrons, and expanding notions of what it means to be an educated citizen, prepared for the world today. Libraries are well prepared to support anywhere, anytime learning, and librarians are strong advocates for citizens' understanding their rights and responsibilities regarding intellectual freedom and education".

How to Teach Media Literacy in a Virtual Classroom

How to Teach Media Literacy in a Virtual Classroom | Educommunication | Scoop.it
The last year has brought renewed calls for investments in news literacy education as a way to teach media consumers to sort fact from fiction.

It’s a daunting task given the cottage industry dedicated to peddling fiction, our complicity in spreading hoaxes on social media and our inability to agree on basic facts. Add to those concerns the glut of online information that isn’t wholly false but is intentionally misleading, our entrenched confirmation biases that limit the effectiveness of fact checking and research showing that students — the primary target of news literacy education — have difficulty evaluating the credibility of online information and can be easily duped.

Is Social Media Killing Democracy? Computational Propaganda, Algorithms, Automation and Public Life

"The design and implementation of social media platforms has put several advanced democracies into a kind of democratic deficit. First, social algorithms allow fake news stories from untrustworthy sources to spread like wildfire over networks of family and friends. Second, social media algorithms provide very real structure to what political scientists often call “elective affinity” or “selective exposure”. We prefer to strengthen our ties to the people and organizations we already know and like. Third, technology companies, including Facebook and Twitter, have been given a moral pass on the normative obligations for democratic discourse that we hold journalists and civil society groups to. Using evidence from the ERC-funded Consolidator Award on Computational Propaganda, I discuss the ways in which social media platforms have become they key infrastructures for political discourse, identify how these technological affordances have put us into a democratic deficit, and conclude with some ideas about ways in which social media platforms could be a better infrastructure for deliberative democracy."

Digital economy and society in the EU - data and interactive maps

Digital economy and society in the EU - data and interactive maps | Educommunication | Scoop.it
For many people in the EU, using the internet has become a common activity: 82 % were internet users, meaning they had been online at least once during the last 3 months prior to the 2016 survey.

Most internet users said that they accessed the internet regularly during these 3 months: 87 % of them were online every day and a further 10 % at least once per week, but not daily. The highest shares of daily internet users were found in Italy (96 %) and Luxembourg (95 %).

Nowadays, internet users have many options as to how they can go online and they often use more than one device to do so. In 2016, mobile/smart phones were the most frequently used device as reported by 79 % of internet users in the EU, 64 % said they used a laptop/netbook, 54 % a desktop computer and 44 % a tablet.

Ofcom report: Adults' Media Lives

"Ofcom's Adults' Media Lives study was set up in 2005 to provide a small-scale, rich and detailed qualitative complement to Ofcom's quantitative surveys of media literacy. The project follows the same 19 individuals over time, and interviews them on camera each year about their media habits and attitudes. The interviews provide evidence about the motivations and the context of media use, and how media services and devices are part of daily life and domestic circumstances. The project also provides us with rich detail of how media habits and attitudes change over time, in particular linked to life-stage."
