«Global citizenship assumes ease of participation in global spaces in which persons are media and information literate and are equipped with competencies and attitudes to deal with the multi-faceted nature of a mediated world in which information is no longer bound by space or time. The unprecedented access to and use of media and Internet technologies for communication and collaboration especially among youth, suggest that effective strategies must be found to enable active critical inquiry and effective media production. The proliferation of mediated spaces throughout education environments, as well as personal and professional environments, does not in itself guarantee that citizens will consider their role as global citizens as they create and consume media. This awareness must be cultivated, encouraged and taught.»

"Media literacy is an increasingly pressing issue for media psychologists and educators who strive to prepare people of all ages to function well in a media-rich, globally connected world.   The ever-expanding integration of media technologies in our daily lives, from social media platforms to mobile apps, have challenged our understanding of just what it means to be literate in the 21st century (Hobbs & Jensen, 2009).  The emerging trend of transmedia storytelling will continue to push the envelope even farther.  Transmedia storytelling goes beyond the need to segment such skills as search and collaboration.  It demands the ability to recognize, understand, and interact with narrative threads across multiple modalities, not just within them.

Transmedia storytelling is the design and distribution of a story that is coordinated across multiple media channels.  Each channel offers unique content, using the strengths of each medium to its best advantage to build a larger, richer story.  Transmedia storytelling is intentionally designed for participation, drawing the audience in as co-creators to expand and develop the narratives."

Transmedia literacy implies engaging critically in nonlinear narratives of all kinds, from entertainment and branding to journalism.  We build mental models unconsciously, to create a holistic understanding.  In entertainment, we revel in narratives of choice--we can actively pursue and evaluate content based on enjoyment, relevance, and identity.  Many other narratives are more subtle, news, commercial and social stories can be equally immersive and persuasive without our awareness.  Transmedia literacy emphasizes the need for mindful attention to the narrative construction that create larger ideaworlds in our off and online environments.

Measuring web traffic to social networks compared to other websites, the UK regulator found some unsuspected results. Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter are seeing less weekly visits from users in major countries around the world.

Public Service Content in a Connected Society: Ofcom's 3rd review of public service broadcasting

"Ofcom is currently carrying out its third review of public service broadcasting (PSB), looking at the period from 2008 to 2013.

Ofcom is required to report on the delivery of public service content over this period, with a view to maintaining and strengthening the PSB system. In order to do so, we have examined changes in both the broadcasting and the wider communications sectors, and their potential effect on the current PSB system.

This document first sets out the wider context in which the PSB system operates. It then assesses the extent to which the system has delivered the purposes of PSB since 2008, and looks at the contribution of other media services such as non-PSB television, radio and online services. It also examines potential future challenges to the system and explores how the system might be maintained and strengthened."

Study finds social media use beneficial to overall health of elderly

"Training older people to use social media improves cognitive capacity, increases a sense of self-competence and could have a beneficial overall impact on mental health and physical well-being, according to a study carried out in the UK and Italy.

During the two-year project, 120 elderly and vulnerable people from two regions renowned for the longevity of its populace – the south west of England and the Marche region of central Italy – were given specially-designed computers, broadband connections and training in using e-mail, Skype, Facebook and other social media tools. A control group simply received their usual care."

Telecoms industries had the largest absolute increase in revenue in 2013, up by £18bn to £842bn. Television revenues continued to grow at the fastest rate among the communications industries, rising by 3.1% in 2013 to £254bn.

"At least half of all internet users had a smartphone in all the countries for which data were available in October 2014. In the UK, 63% of internet users said that they had a smartphone, the third-highest proportion among the EU5 countries after Spain and Italy."

“Tudo o que previa, aconteceu.” É com esta simples frase que Sérgio Denicoli, investigador e professor da Universidade do Minho, olha agora para as conclusões apresentadas na sua tese de doutoramento, aprovada a 30 de Outubro de 2012. “Os factos demonstram que estava correcto”, salienta ao i. Na altura, a Portugal Telecom e a Anacom, regulador das telecomunicações, reagiram em força contra as conclusões da dita tese, mas foi mais para a fotografia. Os processos que foram prometidos contra Denicoli não passaram disso mesmo, promessas. Pouco mais de dois anos depois do doutoramento, a Televisão Digital Terrestre (TDT), que permitiu “a formação de monopólios” pela PT, é mais um activo que está a leilão pela brasileira Oi.
