How The LAMP used media literacy to engage students and boost test scores at one NYC elementary school

How The LAMP used media literacy to engage students and boost test scores at one NYC elementary school | Educommunication | Scoop.it
In the spring semester of 2014, The LAMP was hired to complement an after-school Common Core test-prep program at The Magnet School for Technology and Communications (TMSTC) in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan. The LAMP has partnered with this school for a number of years, delivering in-school media literacy workshops to elementary students covering everything from basic visual literacy to news and advertising literacy. Throughout those in-school programs, The LAMP delivered unique, customized curricula while working with the teachers to incorporate specific learning units. This new assignment, however, was something different. How could we integrate our curricula into a structured test-prep program, providing a fun and interactive learning environment while reinforcing Common Core-aligned skills?

Good News About the Future of News Literacy

Good News About the Future of News Literacy | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Good news about the news business has been almost nonexistent lately, and good ideas for reversing the trend have been pretty scarce as well. But there is an interesting new idea for coping with traditional journalism’s decline: news literacy.

This App Teaches Millennials About the World Before They Try to Change It

This App Teaches Millennials About the World Before They Try to Change It | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Kids these days just want to make the world a better place.

According to a 2011 study by Pew Research, 79 percent of people aged 18 to 24 say having a career that benefits society is “very important,” and another Pew study, from 2010, found that millennials volunteer more often than any other age group. As much as selfies and student load debt, this drive to make a difference defines the Millennial generation.

But 18-year old Patrick Finnegan is worried about his fellow millennials. “A lot of people my age talk about changing the world,” he says. “But they don’t know anything about it.”

Why Core Standards Must Embrace Media Literacy

Why Core Standards Must Embrace Media Literacy | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Today’s young people are growing up in a world full of smartphones, texting, YouTube, Internet access, and instant entertainment and information. But while they may be media-savvy, we maintain that they are not necessarily media- or digital-literate.

Multiple studies have shown that many young people lack the media and information-literacy skills they need to be competent communicators in the 21st century. Many don’t venture beyond the top result when searching online and lack the critical skills to assess the validity of online-search results and identify the sources of information from both online and other media.

In this article the authors emphasize the need to foster media literacy in order to arm the youth with the necessary tools to be more comprehensive when it comes to accessing, evaluating, producing, and critically analyzing media and media messages.

Why Chicago is mandating coding education

Why Chicago is mandating coding education | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel believes the language of the future is code writing -- and he wants every kid in Chicago to be prepared.

In a room full of techies at the Internet of Things World Forum last week, he didn't talk about Chicago's chief data officer or the city's smart parking and LED street lights. Instead, he emphasized the Windy City's commitment to computer science and coding education.

Thought-provoking, John. I think their sample size is way too small to draw any conclusions, however. Nevertheless, it is an interesting twist for further exploration.

Parents, Television And Cultural Change - Analysis - Eurasia Review

Parents, Television And Cultural Change - Analysis - Eurasia Review | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Given a large body of evidence that television influences cultural attitudes, the fear that foreign content erodes local culture may be justified. Such reasoning is often cited in support of the cultural exception that the audiovisual industry routinely receives. This column introduces an economic model of cultural transmission and viewer choice to argue that a competitive TV industry is the best way to ensure cultural survival.
