"AverageMohamed.com was set up to talk plainly to Humanity. The issue of extremism is one that directly affects us all. I have waited for a constructive logical argument that can reach average people. It has dawned on me that it will take an average guy. It is an average guy who turns average people into extremists. It will take all of us average people to tell them other wise. My mission is simply create a counter ideology with your help and input. Give average parents who deal with their average kids and clergy talking points that can help with theological or even logical talking points countering falsehood propagated by extremists. I live happily in the greatest place a person can call home, amongst a people who cherish peace and offer people like me unparralled oportunity to achieve as much as I want to. It is in their name and that of my children and the right to free speech I do this."

"L’expression « éducation critique aux médias » évoque tout à la fois un projet social et une pratique pédagogique dont les principaux ancrages conceptuels proviennent à la fois des sciences de la communication et des sciences de l’éducation. Ce projet ambitionne de développer des compétences favorisant une participation active, critique et réflexive aux processus de production et de diffusion de la culture et de l’information (Jellner & Share, 2005 ; Hobbs & Amy Jensen, 2009 ; Lee, 2010 ; Gonnet, 2001). La somme de ces compétences est usuellement appelée, dans la littérature anglo-saxonne, « littératie médiatique » (Potter, 2013). Si les perspectives critiques en éducation aux médias ont d’abord trouvé leurs fondements dans les approches visant à appréhender l’impact des médias de masse, elles empruntent désormais de nouvelles orientations à l’ère numérique (Hoechsmann & Poynt, 2012). Les problématiques traitées regroupent tout autant la lutte aux inégalités numériques, la surveillance et la protection de la vie privée, la remise en question des régimes de propriété intellectuelle, les nouvelles formes de censure et d’intimidation, le sexisme, le racisme, les représentations stéréotypées des minorités dans les contenus numériques, les effets de la concentration et de la convergence médiatique sur la qualité et la diversité de l’information. Il est généralement reconnu que les habitudes de production et de consommation médiatique des élèves représentent dorénavant une problématique affectant le secteur de l’enseignement dans son ensemble."

How do refugees find the<br/>right information, before, during and after their<br/>journeys to Germany? | Educommunication | Scoop.it
From November 2015 to February 2016, our research unit conducted in-depth interviews and focus-group discussions with altogether 88 refugees from Iraq and Syria in Berlin. The study centered on the question which information sources they used during the stages of pre-departure, the actual travel, and the period after their arrival in Germany.

The results demonstrate that most of the interviewees did feel well-informed before and during their flight. The most-trusted information about routes and risks was inter-personal communication with individuals who had freshly arrived in the EU. Traditional media, in contrast, hardly played any role for them. A great lack of access to reliable information was perceived after the arrival in Germany, especially because of language barriers.

The narratives constructed and disseminated over various decades about the colonial past have profoundly influenced the relations established between the Portuguese population and ‘immigrants’. The stereotypes conveyed are deeply embedded in the social memory of the Portuguese, influencing intercultural relations. In order to analyse the perceptions of young people about intercultural relations, we conducted focus groups with secondary school students involving the viewing of the film Li ké Terra (2010) and subsequent group discussion. In this article we present the results of the focus groups in articulation with the narrative of the film. The results demonstrate the persistence of certain negative stereotypes concerning the populations descendent from African immigrants, indicating that the memory of the colonial past significantly influences the imaginary and social identity of young people, also contributing to this youth perceiving young black people born in Portugal as immigrants. We argue that documentary and film literacy can play a central role in the reflexive and critical transformation of auto- and hetero-representations of young people, contributing to the decolonisation of the national imaginary.

I had thoughtful teachers and adults who encouraged me to pursue my interests. I think finding a good mentor who will guide you not only in terms of your civic interests, but also in terms of the big picture of one’s life is incredibly important. And speaking of big picture—I felt that the younger me always pursued my civic interests on the side, in addition to school, work, and my other obligations. I think it would be great if we could open up a space of freedom within schools, or within paid occupations, that allow for young people to pursue their civic interests and receive academic and monetary recognition for their work.

In the media literacy literature, the challenges associated with assessment have, to a great extent, been ignored. The purpose of this mixed methods study was therefore to explore the views of media literacy scholars and professionals on assessment challenges through qualitative interviews (n = 10) with the intent of using this information to develop a quantitative survey to validate and extend the qualitative findings with a larger sample of media literacy professionals and scholars from around the world (n = 133). The findings offer an overview of the assessment challenges encountered by these participants.

The inspiring first day of the Second European Media and Information Literacy Forum highlighted many initiatives that are being undertaken in Europe, with the common messages corresponding on national, regional and international level.
Media and Information Literacy (MIL) also received strong recognition by the government of Latvia, with Ms Inara Murniece, Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Latvia present on the opening session of the Forum. Ms Dace Melb'rde, the Minister for Culture of the Republic of Latvia, emphasized the importance of MIL at the official reception organized by the Latvian government, stating: 'MIL is a GPS of the media and information landscape'.

In video veritas, if we divert the old Latin saying: In video, there is truth! The digital media revolution and the convergence of social media with broadband wired and wireless connectivity are bringing breaking news to online video platforms; and, news organisations delivering information by Web streams and TV broadcast often rely on user-generated recordings of breaking and developing news events shared by social media to illustrate the story. However, in video there is also deception. Access to increasingly sophisticated editing and content management tools, and the ease in which fake information spreads in electronic networks requires reputable news outlets to carefully verify third-party content before publishing it, reducing their ability to break news quickly while increasing costs in times of tight budgets.

InVID will build a platform providing services to detect, authenticate and check the reliability and accuracy of newsworthy video files and video content spread via social media.
