Mapping Media Literacy Practices and Actions in EU28 - just published

Mapping Media Literacy Practices and Actions in EU28 - just published | Educommunication | Scoop.it
"So what is Europe doing to encourage our media literacy? What measures are being taken at national and European levels to improve our critical appreciation and understanding of the mass media? The European Audiovisual Observatory, part of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, has just published a brand new study - Mapping of media literary practices and actions in EU - 28 - free to download by clicking on the button above. This study has been financed by the European Commission with the goal of analysing the various media literacy initiatives on a national or regional level in order to provide an overview of what is currently being undertaken. This is the first major mapping exercise to survey the field in Europe."

An open letter on DRM [Digital Rights Management] to the inventor of the web, from the inventor of net neutrality

An open letter on DRM [Digital Rights Management] to the inventor of the web, from the inventor of net neutrality | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Wu wrote to Berners-Lee to thank him for his yeoman duty in fighting for net neutrality -- a live issue that has acquired a new and regrettable urgency thanks to the Dingo Babysitter that Trump put in charge of the FCC.

But Wu goes on to draw a connection between the problems of DRM and the problems of network discrimination: DRM is wrapped up in a layer of legal entanglements (notably section 1201 of America's Digital Millennium Copyright Act), which allow similar kinds of anticompetitive and ugly practices that make net neutrality so important.

This is a live issue, too, because the W3C just held the most contentious vote in its decades-long history, on whether to publish a DRM standard for the web without any of the proposed legal protections for companies that create the kinds of competing products and services that the law permits, except when DRM is involved.

Educomunicação: o conceito, o profissional, a aplicação  - acesso livre

Educomunicação: o conceito, o profissional, a aplicação  - acesso livre | Educommunication | Scoop.it

5 Ways to NEVER Be Duped by Fake News

5 Ways to NEVER Be Duped by Fake News | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Sure, most of us know that just because you read something on the Internet doesn’t mean it's true. And lately everyone is talking about fake news — hoaxes, propaganda, and flat-out lies that are intentionally meant to look like real news. Confusingly, President Donald Trump has been attempting to redefine the term to mean anything that is reported by the mainstream media with which he disagrees. Even satire, a worthwhile and thought-provoking writing genre, is often incorrectly lumped together with fake news or taken at face value and mistaken for news.

Reconhece as notícias falsas?

Reconhece as notícias falsas? | Educommunication | Scoop.it

Media at the margins? After the mainstreaming of participatory media practices

"The Journal of Alternative and Community Media is being launched at a point in time that is both interesting and challenging. Key practices and value propositions of what used to be niche media have reached the mainstream and have become cornerstones of everyday communication. Yet many alternative and community media are struggling, and academic attention often remains focused on the classic margins of the media ecology. What has changed, and what does this mean for our academic field? [...]"

How Western civilisation could collapse

How Western civilisation could collapse | Educommunication | Scoop.it
The political economist Benjamin Friedman once compared modern Western society to a stable bicycle whose wheels are kept spinning by economic growth. Should that forward-propelling motion slow or cease, the pillars that define our society – democracy, individual liberties, social tolerance and more – would begin to teeter. Our world would become an increasingly ugly place, one defined by a scramble over limited resources and a rejection of anyone outside of our immediate group. Should we find no way to get the wheels back in motion, we’d eventually face total societal collapse.

How to use Facebook Live for journalism and improve user engagement: Lessons from Spanish-language media

How to use Facebook Live for journalism and improve user engagement: Lessons from Spanish-language media | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"When ranchera singer Pedro Infante died in April 1957, then-nascent Mexican television broadcast his funeral live, with black-and-white images showing a crowd following his funeral procession through the streets of Mexico City. It became a historical television broadcast in that country. Decades later, the mourning for the death of another Mexican popular idol – singer-songwriter Juan Gabriel – was broadcast live last year, although the scope of the images multiplied and transcended borders thanks to many media that broadcast it by Facebook Live. Facebook's live streaming platform emerged in 2015, but was opened to the public in January 2016. News media did not delay getting on board."

eHealth literacy and Web 2.0 health information seeking behaviors among baby boomers and older adults

BACKGROUND:
Baby boomers and older adults, a subset of the population at high risk for chronic disease, social isolation, and poor health outcomes, are increasingly utilizing the Internet and social media (Web 2.0) to locate and evaluate health information. However, among these older populations, little is known about what factors influence their eHealth literacy and use of Web 2.0 for health information.

OBJECTIVE:
The intent of the study was to explore the extent to which sociodemographic, social determinants, and electronic device use influences eHealth literacy and use of Web 2.0 for health information among baby boomers and older adults.

Competencies vs. Skills or What vs. How

Competencies vs. Skills or What vs. How | Educommunication | Scoop.it
While skills are an important part of learning and career paths, they’re not rich or nuanced enough to guide students towards true mastery and success. Skills focus on the “what” in terms of the abilities a student needs to perform a specific task or activity. They don’t provide enough connection to the how. Competencies take this to the next level by translating skills into behaviors that demonstrate what has been learned and mastered in a competent fashion. In short, skills identify what the goal is to accomplish.
