"Average Mohamed" project: "was set up to talk plainly to Humanity" [stories, curriculum, resources] | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"AverageMohamed.com was set up to talk plainly to Humanity. The issue of extremism is one that directly affects us all. I have waited for a constructive logical argument that can reach average people. It has dawned on me that it will take an average guy. It is an average guy who turns average people into extremists. It will take all of us average people to tell them other wise. My mission is simply create a counter ideology with your help and input. Give average parents who deal with their average kids and clergy talking points that can help with theological or even logical talking points countering falsehood propagated by extremists. I live happily in the greatest place a person can call home, amongst a people who cherish peace and offer people like me unparralled oportunity to achieve as much as I want to. It is in their name and that of my children and the right to free speech I do this."

5-Minute Film Festival: 9 Videos on News Literacy | Educommunication | Scoop.it
In our increasingly information-saturated society, it can be challenging for young people (or any of us!) to sort fact from fiction in journalism. We get news from all directions, at all times, on multiple channels; citizen reporting competes with major corporate conglomerates for our attention and our trust. As we get ready to celebrate News Engagement Day on October 6th, what can you do to help your students become more critical consumers of news media? The video playlist below should provide a good entry point to the discussion, and then you'll find some resources for digging deeper.

Digital Literacy Framework - secondary school | MediaSmarts

Digital Literacy Framework - secondary school | MediaSmarts | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Given their autonomy, teens can no longer be forbidden to do things, especially online. Rigid bans don’t work because teens are at an age where they are trying to establish their own rules and can easily get around those they disagree with. More importantly, heavy restrictions shut down discussions between adults and teens about how to safely diminish risks, which teens are very interested in doing.

Contrary to popular belief, cyberbullying remains a problem in high school. Students in these grades should learn the ways that they can speak out and make a difference, both in cases of individual cyberbullying and in building more tolerant and respectful online spaces.

Cell phone ownership also peaks in older grades. That makes it essential to teach these students how to balance their online and offline lives and deal with the stresses of social media. Because teens are constantly building a digital footprint as they send and share content online, it’s also important that they learn how to make a positive impression and to consider the need to get consent before sharing a photo or any other content belonging to someone else.

European Council to foster media literacy and critical thinking

The Council invites member states to "Support efforts to equip teaching staff with the skills and tools needed to address the issues of media literacy and critical thinking in an effective manner with learners of all ages and backgrounds, inter alia by using the School Education Gateway and by promoting peer-topeer learning via the e-Twinning platform. Continue to cooperate with, and take into account the work done by, other multilateral fora, such as the Council of Europe15, UNESCO and the OECD, since the challenges cross borders and affect countries both inside and outside the European Union. Encourage use of the funding opportunities offered by all relevant EU funds and programmes - notably Erasmus+, the Connecting Europe Facility, the European Structural and Investment Funds, Horizon 2020, Creative Europe and Europe for Citizens - to support these efforts."

Jóvenes y cultura audiovisual: nuevos modos de ver televisión

Jóvenes y cultura audiovisual: nuevos modos de ver televisión | Educommunication | Scoop.it

If you're a parent, you probably find yourself asking: how much screen time is ok for kids?

And that's just the first of many questions parents consider when they're dealing with the digital age and child rearing. What's the balance between too much tech and too little tech as kids develop? How is parents' smart phone scrolling affecting a toddler's interaction with their tablet? How can we protect children's privacy as they go online at a younger age? And what's the deal with that creepy Hello Barbie?

A philosophy of empowerment through media literacy education

For 500 years, since the invention of moveable type, we have valued the ability to read and write as the primary means of communicating and understanding history, cultural traditions, political and social philosophy and the news of the day. In more recent times, traditional literacy skills ensured that individuals could participate fully as engaged citizens and functioning adults in society. Today families, schools and all community institutions share the responsibility for preparing young people for living and learning in a global culture that is increasingly connected through multi-media and influenced by powerful images, words, and sounds.

Lego toys are getting more violent, study says

Lego toys are getting more violent, study says | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Even by the researchers’ own measure, it’s an unusual study. Instead of focusing on the potential deleterious effects of violent toys and imagery on children, they sought to analyze just how violent one of the world’s most popular toys has become since its inception in 1958.

“There is little research studying how violent the toys themselves have become; that is, how the toys’ design might connote, encourage or depict violence, aggression or anti-social behavior,” the study says.

The study’s lead author, Christoph Bartneck, is, incidentally, a former Lego employee and the author of eight books on Lego sets and figures. "My curiosity was triggered when I saw some very old Lego catalogs. Their products and the scenarios in which they were shown looked so peaceful," Batneck told Mashable via email, explaining why he launched the study.

Smartphone by default internet users: A qualitative research report

"This qualitative research report focuses on those who conduct the vast majority of their online activities through their smartphone - either through choice or due to external factors limiting their access to alternative devices. Ofcom data show that approximately one in six adults now rely on devices such as smartphones and tablets for online access, and the trend is rising: at 16% in 2015, this is almost three times as likely as in the previous year (6%). The research provides a clear understanding of the needs, experiences and characteristics of people who predominantly access the internet through their smartphone, and what this means in relation to their media literacy. The fieldwork involved 26 two-hour in-depth interviews in five UK cities: Glasgow, Leeds, London, Belfast and Cardiff. During these interviews, researchers explored the digital behaviour and skills of participants across a number of dimensions."
