We have to see that for some students, technology actually can provide them the voice that they have never had before.  I spoke to one student that said the use of social media actually inspired them to start speaking publicly because they developed confidence through a medium that worked for them.  I think of how many students would benefit and feel more comfortable talking in public when they would be allowed to use a medium that works for them first.

Given their autonomy, teens can no longer be forbidden to do things, especially online. Rigid bans don’t work because teens are at an age where they are trying to establish their own rules and can easily get around those they disagree with. More importantly, heavy restrictions shut down discussions between adults and teens about how to safely diminish risks, which teens are very interested in doing. 

Contrary to popular belief, cyberbullying remains a problem in high school. Students in these grades should learn the ways that they can speak out and make a difference, both in cases of individual cyberbullying and in building more tolerant and respectful online spaces.

Cell phone ownership also peaks in older grades. That makes it essential to teach these students how to balance their online and offline lives and deal with the stresses of social media. Because teens are constantly building a digital footprint as they send and share content online, it’s also important that they learn how to make a positive impression and to consider the need to get consent before sharing a photo or any other content belonging to someone else.

Somos muchos los que de forma recurrente en este y otros foros hemos planteado que la radio necesita una renovación generacional de oyentes. Si repasamos nuestros artículos, posts y cuentas en las redes sociales, no pasa un día sin que alguno de los que nos dedicamos de un modo u otro a la radio, mostremos nuestra preocupación por su futuro y la vinculemos directamente con un abandono de la audiencia más joven. La Facultad de Comunicación de la Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca no vive de espaldas a esta realidad y desde hace tiempo, asumimos como parte de nuestra responsabilidad y trabajo, acercar la radio a los más jóvenes tanto desde las propias aulas de la facultad como desde la investigación, a través de propuestas y acciones que mejoren la alfabetización mediática y generen una cultura radiofónica en niños y jóvenes.

New social media have become indispensable to people all over the world as platforms for communication, with Facebook being the most popular. Hence, platforms such as Facebook are also becoming crucial tools for ethnographers because much social life now exists ‘online’. What types of field relations stem from such social media-driven ethnography? And what kinds of data do these relations present to the ethnographer? These questions must be considered in order to understand the challenges Facebook and other social media pose to ethnographic methodology. This article focuses on how Facebook may play an important role even in ethnographic work concerned with questions other than how Facebook works as a social medium. Most importantly it allows the ethnographer to keep up-to-date with the field.

« Journal au collège », 17e édition

Cette année encore, pour 17 classes de 4e et de 3e , soit quelque 420 élèves, l’éducation aux médias est passée par l’opération « Journal au collège », menée par L’Alsace , en partenariat avec l’Éducation nationale et le conseil départemental du Haut-Rhin. Le résultat est visible aujourd’hui, dans un supplément de 20 pages distribué gratuitement dans les éditions haut-rhinoises de notre journal.

Au fil des mois écoulés, les journalistes de la rédaction se sont ainsi rendus dans les établissements scolaires pour aider les élèves, en lien avec les enseignants, à choisir leurs sujets et à partir sur le terrain, à construire leur réflexion, puis à rédiger les articles. Ils ont plus généralement abordé leur profession et le monde de la presse, sans oublier une découverte des locaux de L’Alsace à Mulhouse.

Debido a que Gephi es una herramienta de análisis de redes de fácil acceso y poderosa, proponemos un tutorial diseñado para permitir que cada uno haga sus primeros experimentos en dos conjuntos de datos complementarios.
Después de una breve introducción sobre la base de ARS y algunos ejemplos que demuestra el potencial de esta herramienta y da un poco de inspiración, este tutorial se divide en 2 principales "ejercicios": una red geográfica de 1000 individuos envío de cartas por toda Europa y un 2- modo de red de 100 miembros de 10 instituciones diferentes.

Even by the researchers’ own measure, it’s an unusual study. Instead of focusing on the potential deleterious effects of violent toys and imagery on children, they sought to analyze just how violent one of the world’s most popular toys has become since its inception in 1958.

“There is little research studying how violent the toys themselves have become; that is, how the toys’ design might connote, encourage or depict violence, aggression or anti-social behavior,” the study says.

The study’s lead author, Christoph Bartneck, is, incidentally, a former Lego employee and the author of eight books on Lego sets and figures. "My curiosity was triggered when I saw some very old Lego catalogs. Their products and the scenarios in which they were shown looked so peaceful," Batneck told Mashable via email, explaining why he launched the study.

Smartphone by default internet users: A qualitative research report

"This qualitative research report focuses on those who conduct the vast majority of their online activities through their smartphone - either through choice or due to external factors limiting their access to alternative devices. Ofcom data show that approximately one in six adults now rely on devices such as smartphones and tablets for online access, and the trend is rising: at 16% in 2015, this is almost three times as likely as in the previous year (6%). The research provides a clear understanding of the needs, experiences and characteristics of people who predominantly access the internet through their smartphone, and what this means in relation to their media literacy. The fieldwork involved 26 two-hour in-depth interviews in five UK cities: Glasgow, Leeds, London, Belfast and Cardiff. During these interviews, researchers explored the digital behaviour and skills of participants across a number of dimensions."

"Désormais chaque individu, professionnel ou particulier est attaché à son organe de contrôle personnel : le smartphone. En effet, depuis bientôt dix ans, les smartphones nous pistent, renseignent, décident, et géolocalisent à chaque instant. « Je suis ici, que puis-je faire là, où encore, comment trouver un restaurant ou un magasin pourvoyeur de nouveautés ? ». Autant de questions que chacun se pose à tout moment de la journée. Les individus pensent moins qu’ils ne cliquent. Leur réaction instantanée est d’exiger, de demander, d’ordonner aux applications multiples et innovantes, plutôt que d’écouter leurs envies, désirs, souhaits ou sensations du moment. Aux applications de trouver, mais aussi de choisir pour eux."

Do critical viewers learn from television?

"What does it mean to be ‘critical’ as a television viewer? How does it influence what we learn and how we learn from television? Although analytical and critical media literacy skills are necessary in order to learn from the media, audience studies suggest that being critical can hinder learning, especially when it involves cynicism, scepticism and distrust of the content. In this article, I explore this contradiction to determine whether being critical facilitates or impedes televisual learning. Based on two focus group discussions conducted with viewers, I argue that there are two ways to be critical when watching television: critical viewing is a form of intellectual distance that is incompatible with learning whereas critical involvement is a form of intellectual proximity with the televisual text that facilitates learning through critical thinking."

"Today, the information gathered from massive learning platforms and social media sites allow deriving a very comprehensive set of learning information. To this aim, data mining techniques can surely help to gain proper insights, personalize learning experiences, formative assessments, performance measurements, as well as to develop new learning and instructional design models. Therefore, a core requirement is to classify, mix, filter and process the involved big data sources by means of proper learning and social learning analytics tools. In this perspective, the paper investigates the most promising applications and issues of big data for the design of the next-generation of massive learning platforms and social media sites. Specifically, it addresses the methodological tools and instruments for social learning analytics, pitfalls arising from the usage of open datasets, and privacy and security aspects. The paper also provides future research directions. "

The term alone — soft skills — reflects the problem. These competencies simply aren’t getting their due in the larger public discussion about upskilling, and maybe it’s because “soft” implies they’re more nice-to-have than must-have.

We can talk about the value of teaching kids STEM subjects earlier or steering students toward more marketable college majors, but soft skills are the foundation for any successful career, regardless of what field you’re in. Engineers aren’t typically associated with these kinds of soft skills, but they need them just as much as anyone — and unlike hard skills, which are always evolving and could be gone with the software update of tomorrow, soft skills never expire.

Communication, leadership, cultural sensitivity, and relationship building — these are some of the most valuable skills you can have in the workplace today, but they’re often eclipsed by a focus on the IT skills shortage.

More young adults in the U.S. are living with their parents than at any time since around 1940, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of census data. This trend is not, as you might assume, solely a consequence of the 2007-09 Great Recession, nor is it limited to the U.S. Across much of the developed world, researchers have noted that more young adults are living at their parents’ homes for longer periods – in some cases because they never left, in others because they moved back after being on their own in college or the working world.

But increasingly we live in a world where technology is deeply embedded into everything we do. Thinking about it simply in terms of “digital literacy” puts you about 5 years behind the curve. It’s really much more than that–less about being connected, and more about being mobile".

"Chic, le baccalauréat approche ! C’est toujours l’occasion de rire un peu. En effet, les initiatives réitérées du ministère pour prévenir la fraude, ces dernières années, s’avèrent si rétrogrades et en décalage tant avec les pratiques numériques habituelles des élèves qu’avec l’avancement de la société et du fonctionnement du monde du travail qu’elles suscitent généralement l’hilarité de ceux qui sont concernés, candidats, surveillants et correcteurs. Quoique…

Il faut imaginer le spectacle d’un proviseur de lycée arpentant avec vigueur les couloirs de son lycée centre d’examen avec, dans ses bras, un détecteur de smartphones faisant bip-bip à chaque fois que l’un d’entre eux, appartenant la plupart du temps à un professeur surveillant, est détecté. Il faut voir aussi l’un de ces surveillants s’interroger et interroger ses collègues pour savoir si la montre que porte tel ou tel élève et qui lui donne l’heure — incroyable ! — est connectée ou pas…"
