Report: "Children are growing up in a convergent media ecology"

"Both childhood and the media environment are changing and co-determining each other (Livingstone, 2009). Children are growing up in a convergent media ecology (Ito et al., 2009), whereby significant opportunities for sociability, self-expression, learning, creativity and participation are provided by online media and increasingly, mobile media (Hjorth & Goggin, 2009; Goggin 2010). However, children may also experience risks on the internet: since 2006, the EU Kids Online network has investigated online opportunities and risks for children, showing their interdependence (Livingstone et al., 2011): the more children use the internet, the wider range of opportunities taken up, the more they are exposed to risky experiences. The changing conditions of internet access by means of mobile media call for new research on children's online experiences, opportunities and risks of the mobile internet."

BBC - Teenagers who change the world | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"There are two clichés of teenagers in mainstream media – that of monosyllabic grunting threatening trouble makers, or the front page photo of two long haired blond girls hugging as they celebrate their exam results.

Sure they exist, but Radio 1 wants to shout proudly about all of the young people living in our society and the fantastically diverse lives being experienced in the UK today. "

How To Learn Color Theory In Less Than One Hour

How To Learn Color Theory In Less Than One Hour | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Basic knowledge of color theory can mean the difference between an "amateur" aesthetic and a "professional" one. This applies to nearly every visual medium on the planet: digital photography, painting, website design, video games, fashion (both male and female) – and that's just scratching the surface. Many creative types have skipped learning about the fundamentals of color, or they've forgotten…

| Educommunication | Scoop.it

Where Do Biases Start? A Challenge to Educators

Where Do Biases Start? A Challenge to Educators | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Earlier this year, I was invited to speak to a few hundred African-American male high school students in Jacksonville, Fla. The young people there were searching for answers in the untimely death of their fellow Jacksonville resident Jordan Davis, 17, who was shot and killed at a gas station in November 2012 after playing what perpetrator Michael Dunn called "loud thug music."

"iPad Educators is a great website with the tagline "Redefining Teaching, From Dubia to the World." The website is run by four educators and is non-commercial, which is great because their app reviews are not paid for by the app developers (as I have discovered, many app review sites get paid to write their reviews). iPad Educators also has featured articles and interviews with iPad educators."

Every child should learn to program, but not necessarily how to code - theguardian.com

Every child should learn to program, but not necessarily how to code - theguardian.com | Educommunication | Scoop.it
I am a proud geek and father of three young children. I taught myself to code Basic at the age of 12 on my father’s Commodore 64, and I actively encourage my children to be enthused by the notion of building with digital tools. But I don’t necessarily agree with the notion that every child must learn how to code.

US adds books on poverty and class to dangerous reading list

US adds books on poverty and class to dangerous reading list | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Subjects such as religion, race, gender, sexuality and allegations of sexually explicit content or offensive language frequently top the list.

More worrying, however, is the recent rise in efforts to get books banned that cover poverty and social class. At a time when rising inequality and the demonisation of poorer people (both in the UK and the US) is commonplace, such attempts to remove books that depict the reality of life for people who are struggling should concern us all.

Canadian study aims to learn how digital world shapes kids

Canadian study aims to learn how digital world shapes kids | Educommunication | Scoop.it
A major new study getting underway in Canada aims to find out. It’s led by Dr. Michael Rich, an associate professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. He also works at the Boston Children’s Hospital and runs the Center on Media and Child Health.

The Growing Up Digital (GUD) Alberta project sees him partnering with the University of Alberta and the Alberta Teachers’ Association to follow thousands of Alberta kids into adulthood to learn about their media exposure and trace their educational, medical and developmental outcomes to finally start answering the big questions.

Bringing the World to School: Integrating News and Media Literacy in Elementary Classrooms

Bringing the World to School: Integrating News and Media Literacy in Elementary Classrooms | Educommunication | Scoop.it
For three years, the Powerful Voices for Kids program, a university-school partnership program of the Media Education Lab at the University of Rhode Island, developed a multifaceted approach to integrate news and current events into in-school and after-school instruction in K-6 schools.

Three case studies detailing the program’s impact on an undergraduate novice instructor, an in-school technology mentor, and an experienced classroom teacher illustrate the ways in which different stakeholders at the school approached news integration.

Though approaches, interests, and values of each teacher vary considerably, all teachers share a commitment to the following classroom principles: (1) the use of inquiry to guide lesson development, (2) the role of ambiguity and uncertainty in otherwise structured learning environments, (3) the use of scaffolding and planning to limit and shape students’ experiences with a variety of unpredictable media texts in the classroom, and (4) written reflection on how individual teacher values and motivations contribute to the unique classroom culture. Implications for future professional development in K-6 news literacy are explored.

18 Apps That Will Inspire Creativity In Your Everyday Life - Huffington Post

18 Apps That Will Inspire Creativity In Your Everyday Life - Huffington Post | Educommunication | Scoop.it

Mobile devices like iPads and Androids have transformed the way we experience boredom. No longer is a wayward commuter forced to play Snake or Tetris, occupying themselves in a hardly satisfying, and utterly pixelated virtual reality. The tablet or smart phone-wielding travelers can now immerse themselves in an entire library of art and culture-related distractions, finding solace in everything from a Vincent van Gogh game to a digital version of the Louvre."
