Finnish Media Education. Promoting Media and Information Literacy in Finland. | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"In Finland, media and information literacy (MIL) is seen

as civic competence; important to every citizen from an early age.
The term media education (mediakasvatus in Finnish) refers to
the educational actions promoting MIL and the skills related to it.
Take a look at how Finnish media education is promoted through
national policies and in various organizations and projects.
Get a taste of a few shining examples based on joint national
efforts, and see a brief history of how Finland has developed
into a forerunner in media education."

Surprise! Young people don't trust the media | Educommunication | Scoop.it
A lack of trust in the mainstream media isn’t just a phenomenon among Donald Trump supporters — it’s common among young people all along the political spectrum.

A newly released study from Data & Society and the Knight Foundation found that today’s teenagers and young adults have worryingly low levels of trust in the news media.

Digital Game Dynamics Preferences and Player Types

Digital Game Dynamics Preferences and Player Types | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"One of the easiest ways internet users can protect their accounts from hackers is two-step authentication, but a new survey found that most American internet users don’t even know what that is. The survey, released today by the Pew Research Center, asked 1,055 American adults 13 questions about computer security. Most of the respondents answered more than half of the questions incorrectly. About 90% of the respondents were unable to identify what multi-factor (or two-step) authentication looks like, and about half were unable to identify a phishing email. In many cases, respondents didn’t even venture a guess, and instead indicated that they weren’t sure of the answer."

Media literacy anytime, anywhere learning

Possible Effects of Internet Use on Cognitive Development in Adolescence

The rise of digital media use and the ability to be in almost constant connection to the Internet has raised a number of concerns about how Internet use could impact cognitive abilities. In particular, parents and policy makers are concerned with how being ‘constantly online’ might disrupt social and cognitive development. This review integrates the latest empirical evidence on Internet use with relevant experimental studies to discuss how online behaviors, and the structure of the online environment, might affect the cognitive development of adolescents. Popular concerns are discussed in light of the reviewed evidence, and remaining gaps in knowledge are highlighted.

We chose Agency as the issue’s theme because there is ongoing debate over how users can exercise agency within environments comprised of big data, multinational media corporations and invisible pervasive surveillance.

We were very lucky to engage the cooperation of a range of international scholars  (see the Table of Contents below) who have shared their experiences and perceptions to produce a valuable exploration of Agency in the 21st century.

Access and citizen participation. An update of indicators for the democratization of communications

Access and participation are concepts that emerged in the 70s as indicators of the levels of democratization of audiovisual communications. The work seeks to update these notions in a new scenario defined by the convergence between divergent sectors in the past such as audiovisual, computing and telecommunications. For this, is carried out a review of the most recent theoretical developments that address the changes in the broad sector of communication from the view of communication policy proposals and recommendations of legislation emanating from documents of international human rights. Reflection suggests that the actual technological potential to provide a converging universal service, providing internet, audiovisual and telephone services throughout Argentina, it can be seriously limited by onerous conditional modes of access, that can reproduce stratified communication citizenships. This work tries to generate indicators of access and participation that condense particular situations but with a historical look that also consider the increasingly rapid convergence process dynamics.

Developing Digital Skills and Competences: A Quick-Scan Analysis of 13 Digital Literacy Models

Developing Digital Skills and Competences: A Quick-Scan Analysis of 13 Digital Literacy Models | Educommunication | Scoop.it
The development of digital literacy has become a key element on the agenda of scholars, practitioners and policymakers worldwide. To this end, actors in the field often make use of conceptual models on digital literacy. As these models inevitably play a role in shaping the public debate on digital literacy, it is important to gain insights into the concepts and ideas they put forward. This article aims to: (1) unravel the complexity and diversity of concepts regarding digital skills, literacies and competences; (2) identify the concepts promoted in 13 selected models on digital literacy; and subsequently (3) analyse the concepts that shape and/or dominate the scholarly and public debate on digital literacy. The results of this article are based on a literature review and quick-scan analysis of 13 digital literacy models that have been published and used by actors in the field between 2004-2014. The frameworks were mapped in a matrix and compared on the basis of 39 indicators, clustered in five categories: operational, technical and formal; information, cognition; digital communication; digital content creation; and strategic. The results of the analysis point towards an unbalanced focus on certain skills and competences, with particular emphasis on a series of operational, information-searching, and communication skills

Media Education Competitions: An Efficient Strategy For Digital Literacies?

Media Education Competitions: An Efficient Strategy For Digital Literacies?  | Educommunication | Scoop.it

In this paper we present results from research in Portugal about competitions in schools that involve digital education (2010-2015). The aim of this study is to discuss its effectiveness as a strategy for developing Media Education. The 16 activities we have collected are mostly targeted at the school population and show an emphasis on media production, a dimension that is often not considered part of formal learning, which is more focused on reading than on writing. The results lead us to raise questions about the importance of non-formal education. Interestingly, most of these initiatives have been designed to take place in the school context and are, in various ways, supported by the Ministry of Education, a situation which blurs the boundaries between formal and non-formal learning. The analysis of the data leads us to this specific recommendation: these initiatives should be formally evaluated in order to understand their real impact on the acquisition of news media education skills.

Privamo-los do silêncio, do ar livre. Deixamos a tecnologia anular-lhes os sentidos. E deixar que aprendam à medida do seu próprio ritmo.
