Young people, mobile phones and creative media practices at school

" Digital media has notably changed the lives of young people who use digital devices such as mobile phones as part of their everyday life, communication, social relations, identity build-ing, and creative media production. Mobile phones are used everywhere, even in school where their use is usually banned during lessons. This article concentrates on mobile phone use of students in a secondary school in Finland. Students bring their mobile phone practices to school and break the normal social order of the school in order to create their own space and a sphere of autonomous practices. Students try to find new ways to use mobile phones in the schoolÕs learning settings and use it as a creative tool for different media productions, such as photographing, video making and fan fiction writing. Some teachers try to utilise studentsÕ media practices and give them room for alternative learning methods"

Revisiting Media Literacy through a Digital Lens

Revisiting Media Literacy through a Digital Lens | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"Digital applications have changed my pedagogy and the way that students engage with texts. I am both a teacher and digital media literacy curriculum designer, and in both roles I have reminded myself to be conscious of several pedagogical components of digital media literacy education. It is important: to engage students in media literacy learning in ways that foster their currency in companion digital skills and strategies; to develop instructional experiences that connect youths’ in-school and out-of-school literacy and learning; to offer inquiry into topics that arouse youth passions so to guide them as they become more deeply literate; to balance opportunities for analysis with original composition so that critical examination is lessens negativity and reductionism; and, to think of media literacy as a socially inclusive approach which calls upon civic participation and lifelong learning."

| Educommunication | Scoop.it

"Media and Participation: A site of ideological-democratic struggle" - book in open access now

"Media and Participation: A site of ideological-democratic struggle" - book in open access now | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"Participation has become fashionable again, but at the same time it has always played a crucial role in our contemporary societies, and it has been omnipresent in a surprisingly large number of societal fields. In the case of the media sphere, the present-day media conjuncture is now considered to be the most participatory ever, but media participation has had a long and intense history. To deal with these paradoxes, this book looks at participation as a structurally unstable concept and as the object of a political-ideological struggle that makes it oscillate between minimalist and maximalist versions. This struggle is analysed in theoretical reflections in five fields (democracy, arts, development, spatial planning and media) and in eight different cases of media practice. These case studies also show participation’s close connection to power, identity, organization, technology and quality."

UK audience attitudes towards broadcast media 2016

This report explores UK adults' attitudes and opinions towards television and radio broadcasting, and related areas such as programme standards, advertising and regulation. It summarises the findings set out in the accompanying chart pack analysis of the research results (Annex 1).

The research findings from Ofcom's Media Tracker study provide a valuable source of information on consumers' attitudes, and help inform Ofcom's work on broadcasting standards.

Under the Communications Act 2003, Ofcom has a duty to draw up, and from time to time revise, a Code setting standards for the content of television and radio programmes. This includes rules for the protection of under-18s, the application of generally accepted standards to provide adequate protection from harmful or offensive material, fairness and privacy, sponsorship and product placement in television programmes. This is known as the Broadcasting Code and came into effect in July 2005.

Ofcom recognises that people's views on generally accepted standards may change over time and so should be explored by ongoing consumer research. This report is one of a range of sources that Ofcom draws on in undertaking its broadcasting standards duties.

The emergence of a “digital underclass” in Great Britain and Sweden: Changing reasons for digital exclusion

Research into reasons for Internet non-use has been mostly based on one-off cohort studies and focused on single-country contexts. This article shows that motivations for being offline changed between 2005 and 2013 among non- and ex-users in two high-diffusion European countries. Analyses of Swedish and British data demonstrate that non-user populations have become more concentrated in vulnerable groups. While traditional digital divide reasons related to a lack of access and skills remain important, motivational reasons increased in importance over time. The ways in which these reasons gain importance for non- and ex-user groups vary, as do explanations for digital exclusion in the different countries. Effective interventions aimed at tackling digital exclusion need to take into consideration national contexts, changing non-user characteristics, and individual experience with the Internet. What worked a decade ago in a particular country might not work currently in a different or even the same country.

Conversando con... Ramón Breu sobre cine y educación  | Educommunication | Scoop.it
