» By Any Media Necessary: The New Activism of American Youth | Educommunication | Scoop.it
There is a widespread perception that the foundations of American democracy are dysfunctional, public trust in core institutions is eroding, and little is likely to emerge from traditional politics that will shift those conditions. Youth are often seen as emblematic of this crisis — frequently represented as uninterested in political life, ill-informed about current-affairs, and unwilling to register and vote.

By Any Media Necessary offers a profoundly different picture of contemporary American youth. Young men and women are tapping into the potential of new forms of communication such as social media platforms, spreadable videos and memes, remixing the language of popular culture, and seeking to bring about political change — by any media necessary. In a series of case studies covering a diverse range of organizations, networks, and movements involving young people in the political process — from the Harry Potter Alliance which fights for human rights in the name of the popular fantasy franchise to immigration rights advocates using superheroes to dramatize their struggles — By Any Media Necessary examines the civic imagination at work.

Eduteka - La falacia del nativo digital | Educommunication | Scoop.it

News Literacy Training

News Literacy Training | Educommunication | Scoop.it
“News media literacy” isn’t just about being able to read and understand the news; the term also refers to the ability to analyze the news for reliability and accuracy and distinguish between fact, opinions and assertions. This task — for the journalist and the citizen in a democratic society — grows increasingly difficult in the digital age as the number of news generators proliferates and the process of creating content becomes less uniform.

Quel apport pédagogique des jeux sérieux ? | Educommunication | Scoop.it

5 Myths About Digital Natives - Top Hat Blog

5 Myths About Digital Natives - Top Hat Blog | Educommunication | Scoop.it

Today, there are seven billion people on the planet and 363 million of them fall into a demographic called digital native. Digital Native is a term used by Marc Prensky in 2001 that is being used to label the group of students born after the introduction of digital technology. These students have grown up being connected to the world, using touch-screens, and finding new ways to share the experiences they are having. Their devices are almost an extension of themselves and many of the online activities they participate in seem to be centered on narcissism or social activity.
Those of us who grew up in the time before the Internet are not sure how to connect with these new kinds of students.  Digital natives often have trouble communicating, consider themselves global citizens without knowing much about the world, and question social constructs like love and dating. Despite what we as professors think we know about digital natives, there are clearly some myths being perpetuated about what these students know about technology and what they expect out of their educational environment.

Millennials as Digital Natives: Myths & Realities

"“Millennial” is currently one of the most popular buzzwords in the media. As of 2015, Millennials became the largest generation in the American workforce (35%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics). There are many characteristics that make Millennials interesting to study — their racial diversity, their status as the most educated generation to date, their low marriage and fertility rates, just to name a few. But what is perhaps most relevant to UX professionals is this generation’s childhood experiences with technology, and how they shape its behaviors today. Before discussing Millennials’ digital upbringing, however, we have to establish one essential definition. Who Counts as a Millennial?"

"Media and Participation: A site of ideological-democratic struggle" - book in open access now

"Media and Participation: A site of ideological-democratic struggle" - book in open access now | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"Participation has become fashionable again, but at the same time it has always played a crucial role in our contemporary societies, and it has been omnipresent in a surprisingly large number of societal fields. In the case of the media sphere, the present-day media conjuncture is now considered to be the most participatory ever, but media participation has had a long and intense history. To deal with these paradoxes, this book looks at participation as a structurally unstable concept and as the object of a political-ideological struggle that makes it oscillate between minimalist and maximalist versions. This struggle is analysed in theoretical reflections in five fields (democracy, arts, development, spatial planning and media) and in eight different cases of media practice. These case studies also show participation’s close connection to power, identity, organization, technology and quality."
