"Average Mohamed" project: "was set up to talk plainly to Humanity" [stories, curriculum, resources]

"Average Mohamed" project: "was set up to talk plainly to Humanity" [stories, curriculum, resources] | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"AverageMohamed.com was set up to talk plainly to Humanity. The issue of extremism is one that directly affects us all. I have waited for a constructive logical argument that can reach average people. It has dawned on me that it will take an average guy. It is an average guy who turns average people into extremists. It will take all of us average people to tell them other wise. My mission is simply create a counter ideology with your help and input. Give average parents who deal with their average kids and clergy talking points that can help with theological or even logical talking points countering falsehood propagated by extremists. I live happily in the greatest place a person can call home, amongst a people who cherish peace and offer people like me unparralled oportunity to achieve as much as I want to. It is in their name and that of my children and the right to free speech I do this."

Do critical viewers learn from television?

"What does it mean to be ‘critical’ as a television viewer? How does it influence what we learn and how we learn from television? Although analytical and critical media literacy skills are necessary in order to learn from the media, audience studies suggest that being critical can hinder learning, especially when it involves cynicism, scepticism and distrust of the content. In this article, I explore this contradiction to determine whether being critical facilitates or impedes televisual learning. Based on two focus group discussions conducted with viewers, I argue that there are two ways to be critical when watching television: critical viewing is a form of intellectual distance that is incompatible with learning whereas critical involvement is a form of intellectual proximity with the televisual text that facilitates learning through critical thinking."

Big data for social media learning analytics: potentials and challenges

"Today, the information gathered from massive learning platforms and social media sites allow deriving a very comprehensive set of learning information. To this aim, data mining techniques can surely help to gain proper insights, personalize learning experiences, formative assessments, performance measurements, as well as to develop new learning and instructional design models. Therefore, a core requirement is to classify, mix, filter and process the involved big data sources by means of proper learning and social learning analytics tools. In this perspective, the paper investigates the most promising applications and issues of big data for the design of the next-generation of massive learning platforms and social media sites. Specifically, it addresses the methodological tools and instruments for social learning analytics, pitfalls arising from the usage of open datasets, and privacy and security aspects. The paper also provides future research directions. "

Who Are You Calling Soft? The Value Of Soft Skills In A Tech-Obsessed Economy

Who Are You Calling Soft? The Value Of Soft Skills In A Tech-Obsessed Economy | Educommunication | Scoop.it
The term alone — soft skills — reflects the problem. These competencies simply aren’t getting their due in the larger public discussion about upskilling, and maybe it’s because “soft” implies they’re more nice-to-have than must-have.

We can talk about the value of teaching kids STEM subjects earlier or steering students toward more marketable college majors, but soft skills are the foundation for any successful career, regardless of what field you’re in. Engineers aren’t typically associated with these kinds of soft skills, but they need them just as much as anyone — and unlike hard skills, which are always evolving and could be gone with the software update of tomorrow, soft skills never expire.

Communication, leadership, cultural sensitivity, and relationship building — these are some of the most valuable skills you can have in the workplace today, but they’re often eclipsed by a focus on the IT skills shortage.

In the U.S. and abroad, more young adults are living with their parents

In the U.S. and abroad, more young adults are living with their parents | Educommunication | Scoop.it
More young adults in the U.S. are living with their parents than at any time since around 1940, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of census data. This trend is not, as you might assume, solely a consequence of the 2007-09 Great Recession, nor is it limited to the U.S. Across much of the developed world, researchers have noted that more young adults are living at their parents’ homes for longer periods – in some cases because they never left, in others because they moved back after being on their own in college or the working world.

50 reasons it's time for smartphones in every classroom

50 reasons it's time for smartphones in every classroom | Educommunication | Scoop.it

There are many ways to use a smartphone in the classroom, but it continues to be a touchy subject.

Privacy, equity, bandwidth, lesson design, classroom management, theft, bullying, and scores of other legitimate concerns continue to cloud education’s thinking about how to meaningfully integrate technology in the learning process.

To be clear–learning can happen in the absence of technology. (...)
But increasingly we live in a world where technology is deeply embedded into everything we do. Thinking about it simply in terms of “digital literacy” puts you about 5 years behind the curve. It’s really much more than that–less about being connected, and more about being mobile".

| Educommunication | Scoop.it

Social Learning Vs Informal Learning: Can You Tell The Difference?

Social Learning Vs Informal Learning: Can You Tell The Difference? | Educommunication | Scoop.it

Learning can happen anytime, anywhere, with those around us serving as invaluable sources of inspiration, experience, and knowledge. In many respects, the world is our teacher, but we must be aware of how to tap into the educational opportunities it can offer. Both social and informal learning models are rooted in this ideology.

The Ethnographic Use of Facebook in Everyday Life

The Ethnographic Use of Facebook in Everyday Life | Educommunication | Scoop.it
New social media have become indispensable to people all over the world as platforms for communication, with Facebook being the most popular. Hence, platforms such as Facebook are also becoming crucial tools for ethnographers because much social life now exists ‘online’. What types of field relations stem from such social media-driven ethnography? And what kinds of data do these relations present to the ethnographer? These questions must be considered in order to understand the challenges Facebook and other social media pose to ethnographic methodology. This article focuses on how Facebook may play an important role even in ethnographic work concerned with questions other than how Facebook works as a social medium. Most importantly it allows the ethnographer to keep up-to-date with the field.

« Journal au collège », 17e édition

« Journal au collège », 17e édition | Educommunication | Scoop.it
