«Facebook, c’est mort» ! Vive Snapchat ! | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"Une enquête ethnographique que nous avons menée auprès de 20 jeunes de 12 à 17 ans dans trois régions de France confirme la tendance mesurée par deux récents sondages aux USA et concédée par le directeur financier lors des résultats trimestriels[1]: Facebook est un terrain en voie de désaffection, que les ados délaissent au profit de nouveaux services communicants, le plus souvent ignorés des parents et à l’abri des regards de la foule".

"Average Mohamed" project: "was set up to talk plainly to Humanity" [stories, curriculum, resources] | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"AverageMohamed.com was set up to talk plainly to Humanity. The issue of extremism is one that directly affects us all. I have waited for a constructive logical argument that can reach average people. It has dawned on me that it will take an average guy. It is an average guy who turns average people into extremists. It will take all of us average people to tell them other wise. My mission is simply create a counter ideology with your help and input. Give average parents who deal with their average kids and clergy talking points that can help with theological or even logical talking points countering falsehood propagated by extremists. I live happily in the greatest place a person can call home, amongst a people who cherish peace and offer people like me unparralled oportunity to achieve as much as I want to. It is in their name and that of my children and the right to free speech I do this."

InVID - In Video Veritas project

InVID - In Video Veritas project | Educommunication | Scoop.it
In video veritas, if we divert the old Latin saying: In video, there is truth! The digital media revolution and the convergence of social media with broadband wired and wireless connectivity are bringing breaking news to online video platforms; and, news organisations delivering information by Web streams and TV broadcast often rely on user-generated recordings of breaking and developing news events shared by social media to illustrate the story. However, in video there is also deception. Access to increasingly sophisticated editing and content management tools, and the ease in which fake information spreads in electronic networks requires reputable news outlets to carefully verify third-party content before publishing it, reducing their ability to break news quickly while increasing costs in times of tight budgets.

InVID will build a platform providing services to detect, authenticate and check the reliability and accuracy of newsworthy video files and video content spread via social media.

Youth and portuguese cinema: the (de)colonisation of the imaginary?

Youth and portuguese cinema: the (de)colonisation of the imaginary? | Educommunication | Scoop.it
The narratives constructed and disseminated over various decades about the colonial past have profoundly influenced the relations established between the Portuguese population and ‘immigrants’. The stereotypes conveyed are deeply embedded in the social memory of the Portuguese, influencing intercultural relations. In order to analyse the perceptions of young people about intercultural relations, we conducted focus groups with secondary school students involving the viewing of the film Li ké Terra (2010) and subsequent group discussion. In this article we present the results of the focus groups in articulation with the narrative of the film. The results demonstrate the persistence of certain negative stereotypes concerning the populations descendent from African immigrants, indicating that the memory of the colonial past significantly influences the imaginary and social identity of young people, also contributing to this youth perceiving young black people born in Portugal as immigrants. We argue that documentary and film literacy can play a central role in the reflexive and critical transformation of auto- and hetero-representations of young people, contributing to the decolonisation of the national imaginary.

8 digital skills we must teach our children

8 digital skills we must teach our children | Educommunication | Scoop.it

The way children use technology is very different from adults. This gap makes it difficult for parents and educators to fully understand the risks and threats that children could face online. As a result, adults may feel unable to advise children on the safe and responsible use of digital technologies. Likewise, this gap gives rise to different perspectives of what is considered acceptable behaviour.

'I worried people would forget about me': can teenagers survive without social media?

'I worried people would forget about me': can teenagers survive without social media? | Educommunication | Scoop.it
And where’s the harm? Two-thirds of 12- to 15-year-olds in the UK now own a smartphone. For older teens, the figure is 90%. Under-16s spend an average of three hours a day online, which overtook time spent watching television for the first time this year. They watch videos on YouTube, scroll through Instagram (400 million users worldwide), post on Facebook (1.5 billion) and hang out on Snapchat (100 million). Their adolescence will be shaped in ways that are significantly different from the experiences of their parents, most of whom will wonder about the impact of so much screen time.

Teaching Young Children About Bias, Diversity, and Social Justice

Teaching Young Children About Bias, Diversity, and Social Justice | Educommunication | Scoop.it
When my daughter was three years old, I taught her the word "stereotype." She was just beginning to string words together into sentences, had determined that pink was definitely not her favorite color, and asked (demanded, actually) why all the "girl stuff" was pink and the "boy stuff" was blue. Because there's no three-year-old version for a word describing why colors are gendered in our society, I figured that planting the seed might yield fruit soon enough. And somewhat surprisingly, I was correct.

How should reading be taught in schools?

How should reading be taught in schools? | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"When my son was nine years old, he put aside the large Harry Potter novel he had been slowly, but enthusiastically, reading each evening and instead began ploughing through lots of fairly uninspiring books that he brought home from school each day. It turned out the Year 4 teachers had devised a competition at his school - whichever class read the most books would be rewarded with an end of term pizza party. The aim, I presume, was to motivate the children to read. It is ironic then that the effect was that my son stopped reading for pleasure and instead began reading for the numbers. Reading is now increasingly being reduced to a numbers game in schools."
