For years, Finland has been the by-word for a successful education system, perched at the top of international league tables for literacy and numeracy.

Pasi Silander, the city’s development manager, explained: “What we need now is a different kind of education to prepare people for working life.

“Young people use quite advanced computers. In the past the banks had lots of  bank clerks totting up figures but now that has totally changed.

.

“We therefore have to make the changes in education that are necessary for industry and modern society.”

.

Subject-specific lessons – an hour of history in the morning, an hour of geography in the afternoon – are already being phased out for 16-year-olds in the city’s upper schools. They are being replaced by what the Finns call “phenomenon” teaching – or teaching by topic. For instance, a teenager studying a vocational course might take “cafeteria services” lessons, which would include elements of maths, languages (to help serve foreign customers), writing skills and communication skills.

More academic pupils would be taught cross-subject topics such as the European Union - which would merge elements of economics, history (of the countries involved), languages and geography.

The need for increased news literacy is obvious to anybody who scrolls through Facebook and finds a friend who has posted a story like “Death Row Inmate Dies of Natural Causes 3 Days into Execution” and thinks the account is real. "Why News Matters," a Robert R. McCormick Foundation program that's now in its third and final year, has aimed to boost news literacy at a time when many Americans are having a hard time separating fact from fiction, or news from opinion. The program has been making grants out of an original $6 million pot to encourage news literacy, training an audience in refining “information skills for the 21st century." The McCormick Foundation, built on a publishing fortune, is one of the largest foundations in the United States, with $1.4 billion in assets.

In considering all the various news outlets and sources available to us every minute of every day, it is hard to ignore the different interpretations, perspectives, and points of view we are exposed to on a regular basis.  Media impacts what we think and how we feel.  It often plays on our sympathies as well as our emotions.  We are sent information regarding sensationalized news topics constantly throughout our day.  There are various outlets from which we receive constant updates and notifications through Internet, TV, and Radio, to name a few.  Many hours are spent daily staying connected to stories we hear, waiting for updates and further information. These notifications and updates spread through social networking offering a new way to communicate, share, and comment on news events using technology. What story does it tell? What message is bring conveyed?  Is the news source trying to sway your opinion by how they are delivering the story and the images they share?

Les pratiques de consommation des web séries par les lycéens

Présentes sur le web depuis plus d’une dizaine d’années, les web séries sont un phénomène récent, tantôt média, tantôt création artistique iconoclaste. Encore mal définies par la littérature, à l’instar des séries télévisées, et absentes des principaux médias français, les web séries ne sauraient à l’heure de la société de l’information être considérées comme un phénomène marginal.

L’importance grandissante de ce nouveau média, dans un contexte de mutation, couplée au faible nombre d’étude lui étant consacrée, nous pousse à nous intéresser à ce sujet. Nous souhaitons ainsi nous pencher auprès de la réception des web séries auprès des lycéens, comprendre s’il s’agit du public de ce média en pleine expansion, et comprendre ses enjeux de diffusion et de pénétration. Nous avons pour objectif d’observer si les web séries rentrent dans les pratiques culturelles et numériques des lycéens, et comprendre comment elles s’articulent avec leurs autres pratiques, définitivement orientée vers Internet.

La Semaine de la presse et des médias dans l’école — ne comptez pas sur moi pour y ajouter ce stupide ® dont on l’affuble depuis des années — est une institution. Ancienne, c’est la vingt-sixième édition cette année, et donc vénérable mais pas très branchée car personne parmi ceux qui l’animent n’a jamais pensé à écrire un article à son sujet dans Wikipédia.

50 ans de pédagogie par les petits écrans [eBook]

"Des chercheurs en sciences de l’éducation retracent l’histoire de la pédagogie assistée par les nouveaux médias depuis cinquante ans : de la télévision à l’informatique. 

Ces analyses sont complétées par des témoignages d’enseignants qui ont expérimenté en classe ces nouveaux médias. La première partie (parcours d’exposition) décrit plus spécifiquement l’exposition et une large sélection de photos des vitrines agrémente le texte.

Par ailleurs, des liens renvoient à vingt-trois vidéos réalisées pour l’occasion qui présentent l’histoire de la télévision scolaire avec les témoignages de ses réalisateurs. L’ouvrage met ainsi en valeur la richesse de l’exposition et permet d’en prolonger chez soi l’exploration.

“New media” does not change the essence of what media literacy is, nor does it affect its ongoing importance in society. Len Masterman, a UK-based professor, published his ground-breaking books in the 1980’s and laid the foundation for media literacy to be taught to elementary and secondary students in a systematic way that is consistent, replicable, measurable and scalable on a global basis – and thus, timeless. Masterman’s key insight was that the central unifying concept of media education is that of representation: media are symbolic sign systems that must be decoded. This paper explores the development and the application of the Core Concepts of media literacy, based on Masterman’s groundbreaking work, in Canada and in the U.S.
