MILID Yearbook 2014: Global Citizenship in a Digital World

MILID Yearbook 2014: Global Citizenship in a Digital World | Educommunication | Scoop.it

«Global citizenship assumes ease of participation in global spaces in which persons are media and information literate and are equipped with competencies and attitudes to deal with the multi-faceted nature of a mediated world in which information is no longer bound by space or time. The unprecedented access to and use of media and Internet technologies for communication and collaboration especially among youth, suggest that effective strategies must be found to enable active critical inquiry and effective media production. The proliferation of mediated spaces throughout education environments, as well as personal and professional environments, does not in itself guarantee that citizens will consider their role as global citizens as they create and consume media. This awareness must be cultivated, encouraged and taught.»

Reading Photographs (Handout)

Reading Photographs (Handout) | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"“Photographs invite us to see them as transparent representations, as a kind of historical record. Yet photographs are inevitably fragments. Sontag argues that the moral and political meanings of an image areestablished by the context in which it appears. And the context is changeable and changing: a single image, particularly a political image, may be inserted in different historical circumstances, matched with other anddifferent photographs, and used as evidence for divergent points of view.” -Melani McAlister,

Health literacy is about people having enough knowledge, understanding, skills and confidence to use health information, to be active partners in their care, and to navigate health and social care systems. Health Literacy is being increasingly recognised as a significant public health concern around the world.

Scotland’s 2020 Vision for Health and Social Care focuses on prevention, anticipation and supported self management. Addressing health literacy is at the heart of this commitment to delivering a safe, effective and person-centred healthcare system.

UNESCO: World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development

UNESCO: World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development | Educommunication | Scoop.it
World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development offers a new look at recent evolutions in media freedom, independence, pluralism and journalist safety. These areas are explored at the international level and with respect to gender and global media.

The overarching trend observed throughout is one of disruption brought on by technology and to a lesser extent the global economic crisis, with mixed results for freedom of expression and media development. The publication comes at a critical moment for press freedom amid unprecedented opportunities for expression of new voices as well as new forms of restriction, surveillance and control. World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development is a key resource for governments, the media, academia, the private sector and civil society and is an essential read for anyone interested in the contemporary

Beyond Worksheets, A True Expression of Student Learning

Beyond Worksheets, A True Expression of Student Learning | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Possession of facts is not learning. What is an important skill is the ability to sift through abundant information, identify what is valid and meaningful, then use it to create meaning and express it. This is why student creation is so important in the new economy of information.

Ken's Key Takeaway:
"Far beyond filling out answers on a worksheet, these assignments allow for individual talents and personality to shine through. While it’s unlikely that you have ever heard a person say, “that worksheet changed my life,” most people have an assignment from their childhood that they remember with pride because it was meaningful to them. More often than not, that memorable assignment was one that allowed them to build and create."

Vineta Erzen's curator insight, November 21, 5:28 AM

Can a  true expression of student learnig  be discovered through worksheets snad tests?  A quote from the post I find 'expressive': '' While it’s unlikely that you have ever heard a person say, “that worksheet changed my life,” most people have an assignment from their childhood that they remember with pride because it was meaningful to them. More often than not, that memorable assignment was one that allowed them to build and create.''

OFCOM report: children's digital day

This Ofcom  research "shows children are topping up traditional live TV viewing by watching online video clips and catch-up TV.

It shows that older children aged 11-15 are watching half the amount of live TV per day as adults (1 hour 32 minutes versus 2 hours 58 minutes).

In contrast, older children are spending six times longer than adults watching short online video clips on sites such as YouTube and Vimeo (33 minutes versus 5 minutes).

Half (45%) of 11-15 year olds watch online video clips on websites every week compared with 20% of adults."

| Educommunication | Scoop.it
Surge assim a televisão interativa.

What Kids Are Reading: A Renaissance Learning Report

What Kids Are Reading: A Renaissance Learning Report | Educommunication | Scoop.it
In its latest report about reading, for the 2013-14 school year, Renaissance Learning gathered data from its Accelerated Reader-hosted database, utilized in more than 31,600 primary and secondary schools last year. The database includes book-reading records for more than 9.8 million students, who read more than 330 million books.

Among the general reading highlights:

• On average, students read the most books in grades 2 and 3 (about 57 and 51 per year, respectively), and the fewest in grades 11 and 12 (about 5 per year in each).

•The average number of words students read in books per year begins at about 25,000 in grade 1, rises each year until its peak at about 436,000 in grade 6, and then decreases to the low 300,000s by the end of high school.

1) redefinir o conceito de órgão de comunicação social, no sentido de estabelecer quais os conteúdos que estarão sujeitos a regulação;

2) definir diferentes níveis de regulação, consoante a natureza de cada órgão de comunicação social;

3) discutir em que medida o quadro legal existente permite o apropriado enquadramento destes novos media e identificar pontos carecidos de alteração legislativa;

| Educommunication | Scoop.it
