Measuring the world's digital natives

Measuring the world's digital natives | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Manuel Pinto's insight:

"A new model developed by ITU for this year’s report estimates the size of the digital native population worldwide, showing that in 2012 there were around 363 million digital natives out of a world population of around 7 billion. This equates to 5.2 per cent of the total global population, and 30 per cent of the global youth population. The model defines digital natives as networked youth aged 15-24 years with five or more years of online experience.

Out of a total of 145 million young Internet users in the developed countries, 86.3 per cent are estimated to be digital natives, compared with less than half of the 503 million young Internet users in the developing world. Within the next five years, the digital native population in the developing countries is forecast to more than double."

Safer Internet Day 2016: Play your part for a better internet

Safer Internet Day 2016: Play your part for a better internet | Educommunication | Scoop.it
One in three internet users are children and they spend more and more time on social media, playing online games or using mobile apps. Surfing the Internet brings thousands of exciting opportunities, but also risk exposing young people to threats like cyberbullying, hate speech or manipulative advertising. The emergence of new trends such as Internet of Toys, live streaming, and an increasingly converged media environment also bring new challenges. The aim of Safer Internet Day is to raise awareness of how to enjoy the online world in a secure and responsible way.

How Social Media Is Shaking Up Public Health and Healthcare

How Social Media Is Shaking Up Public Health and Healthcare | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"From clinical healthcare to public health campaigns, the health industry is increasingly turning to social media to support, promote and increase the spread of information and data in order to improve both personal and community health practices. Social media has provided a space to share preventative information and enabled the creation of support structures to track personal health and build patient-to-patient support networks post-diagnosis. It is both responding to the needs of the health industry and creating numerous challenges that health professionals are required to keep up with -- ranging from privacy issues related to social media sharing practices, to the potential for misinformation related to public health spreading quickly if health agencies aren't ready to dispel rumours.

Media studies: why does the subject get such a bad press?

Media studies: why does the subject get such a bad press? | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"Last summer there was a moment when there were concerns that media studies might be deleted,” says David Buckingham, an expert on children and technology and professor at Loughborough University, who spent much of last year fighting for the subject’s future in English schools.

The moment passed: new specifications for media and film studies qualifications were published last week. But will the updated content, combined with our media-saturated lives, swing more support behind media education for 14 to 18-year-olds, and reverse a decline that has seen numbers taking media GCSE fall from a high of almost 70,000 in 2008 to 50,000 in 2014, while the number of students training to be media teachers on the only specialist PGCE is just 13?"

It’s been 20 years since John Perry Barlow declared cyberspace independence | Educommunication | Scoop.it
WHEN DIGITAL DYSTOPIANS and critics of Internet libertarians need a rhetorical dart board, they often pull out a document written by John Perry Barlow, co-founder of the nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation, a former cattle rancher and Grateful Dead lyricist. On this day in 1996, Barlow sat down in front of a clunky Apple laptop and typed out one very controversial email, now known as the “Declaration of Independence of Cyberspace,” a manifesto with a simple message: Governments don’t—and can’t—govern the Internet.

The Monday Note survey on News applications usage yielded surprising findings:
(1) You rely on very small number of news apps;
(2) Twitter and RSS-related apps score quite high, they are the de facto vector for News;
(3) Once huge, Flipboard is losing ground fast while Apple News is not faring well;
(4) Half of readers surveyed would rather have no ads in exchange for a monthly fee.
