We Shouldn't Ignore Media Literacy

We Shouldn't Ignore Media Literacy | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"

While there are other factors in play, basically whenever learning is disconnected from the learner, the innate joy of learning disappears and the learning system becomes highly inefficient. When the teacher is not even speaking the language of the learner, let alone dealing with relevant subject matter, then the incredible human capacity for learning and self empowerment is at great risk. We refer to it as our nation's cognitive surplus. Now imagine if students were allowed to speak their own language in school.

Ignoring Media Literacy also leaves our children defenseless when they are surrounded by the constant barrage of targeted media. Put another way, we are selling our children for a buck.

What are the solutions to incorporate media into the classroom?"

Estudo ERC: Públicos, consumos de noticias e plataformas digitais | Educommunication | Scoop.it

Daniel Tan's curator insight, May 20, 7:40 PM

I think all these online response systems requiring the use of the students' devices are wonderful. However, is there an impact, perhaps one that might be significant enough, of the use of students' devices in that the device is personal. Do students using an older device relatively to others in the class be sensitive in its use When majority of the classmates have the latest ohone device models. Also when teachers and faculty be comfortable of students while using the devices in the exercise are distracted (actual or presumed or perceived) with other apps during that exercise?

Also when the wireless access point be robust and reliable enough when it experiences a surge/flood of signals when large numbers of simultaneous responses are transmitted in a small time window.

My observation is that teachers do not want to be encumbered with such distractions, uncertainty and confrontation when only partial student responses are recorded due to technical issues. The latter also leads to the technical support of student devices which is unknown (which version of OS), unfamiliar (what other apps or potential of interdependencies) and uncertainty (are you sure they are not checking on their apps while others are still thinking of their responses?)

Chris Carter's curator insight, May 20, 8:11 PM

There are a number of student response systems. The more important question, rather than which one are you using, is are you using any one at all?

MSU_TCEE's curator insight, May 26, 5:31 PM

Will cost you to get benefit of asking multiple questions, securing data & privacy, and being able to export data. $75/year for basic protections & additional questions, or $180 to add colleagues and get all Mentimeter has to offer. Device agnostic - works across platforms. Real time answers to multiple choice, open-ended or scaled responses.

O novo mundo da TV Digital

O novo mundo da TV Digital | Educommunication | Scoop.it

The schools in Europe are not using films and audiovisual material to the full

The schools in Europe are not using films and audiovisual material to the full | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"The main findings of the study:

In the schools: film literacy is not recognised as a subject, and most often film serves as an illustration of other subjects. The teaching of film literacy is often dependent on the initiative of individual teachers, who also provide the material to be shown on DVD.In the film industry: licencing of films to be shown in schools is not a priority for the industry, although very good licencing schemes exist in some Member States. In copyright law: EU Member States have implemented the exception for illustration in very different ways and there is a lot of legal uncertainty on the conditions in which films can be used in the context of teaching."

Written Communication May Be 40,000 Years Old

Written Communication May Be 40,000 Years Old | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"It’s common knowledge that the first systematic use of written symbols as a means of communication emerged in Sumer around 3,000 BCE, but now a Canadian researcher is suggesting that as far back as 40,000 years ago our ancestors communicated in writing. Genevieve von Petzinger, an anthropologist from the University of Victoria, studied hundreds of markings from 300 sites in addition to personally visiting and examining 52 caves where ancient humans had lived located in Spain, Portugal, Italy, and France. She then collected these markings in a database and looked for repeated use of the same symbol as well as for patterns of use for the different symbols. What she discovered was surprising: (...)"

Libertad como desconexión (Daniel Innerarity)

Libertad como desconexión (Daniel Innerarity) | Educommunication | Scoop.it
