Children spend six hours or more a day on screens

Children spend six hours or more a day on screens | Educommunication | Scoop.it
The amount of time children spend glued to a screen has risen dramatically in the last 20 years, a new report suggests.
Children aged five to 16 spend an average of six and a half hours a day in front of a screen compared with around three hours in 1995, according to market research firm Childwise.
Teenaged boys spend the longest, with an average of eight hours.
Eight-year-old girls spend the least - three-and-a-half hours, according to the study.
Screen time is made up of time spent watching TV, playing games consoles, using a mobile, computer or tablet.

Schools in Finland will no longer teach 'subjects' | Teaching by Topic

Schools in Finland will no longer teach 'subjects' | Teaching by Topic | Educommunication | Scoop.it

For years, Finland has been the by-word for a successful education system, perched at the top of international league tables for literacy and numeracy.

.

Pasi Silander, the city’s development manager, explained: “What we need now is a different kind of education to prepare people for working life.

.

“Young people use quite advanced computers. In the past the banks had lots of  bank clerks totting up figures but now that has totally changed.

.

“We therefore have to make the changes in education that are necessary for industry and modern society.”

.

Subject-specific lessons – an hour of history in the morning, an hour of geography in the afternoon – are already being phased out for 16-year-olds in the city’s upper schools. They are being replaced by what the Finns call “phenomenon” teaching – or teaching by topic. For instance, a teenager studying a vocational course might take “cafeteria services” lessons, which would include elements of maths, languages (to help serve foreign customers), writing skills and communication skills.

.

More academic pupils would be taught cross-subject topics such as the European Union - which would merge elements of economics, history (of the countries involved), languages and geography.

.

How the McCormick Foundation Has Been Fostering News Literacy

How the McCormick Foundation Has Been Fostering News Literacy | Educommunication | Scoop.it
The need for increased news literacy is obvious to anybody who scrolls through Facebook and finds a friend who has posted a story like “Death Row Inmate Dies of Natural Causes 3 Days into Execution” and thinks the account is real. "Why News Matters," a Robert R. McCormick Foundation program that's now in its third and final year, has aimed to boost news literacy at a time when many Americans are having a hard time separating fact from fiction, or news from opinion. The program has been making grants out of an original $6 million pot to encourage news literacy, training an audience in refining “information skills for the 21st century." The McCormick Foundation, built on a publishing fortune, is one of the largest foundations in the United States, with $1.4 billion in assets.

Mobile Technologies and Empowerment: Enhancing human development through participation and innovation

Mobile Technologies and Empowerment: Enhancing human development through participation and innovation | Educommunication | Scoop.it

«Mobile technologies offer portable, real-time, communication and information access for people who previously had little to no access to affordable communication channels. Mobiles have relatively low physical infrastructure requirements and can reach remote areas in a more cost-effective fashion than other ICTs such as the Internet or fixed phone lines. In some places, mobile devices are simply the only option available. And mobile phones require only basic literacy, making the barriers to entry much lower than with other modern ICTs.»
