Sete dias com os media
Manuel Pinto's insight:

But here’s the thing: the history of social media actually goes back a lot further, and its roots can be found in blogging, Google, AOL, ICQ, the beginnings of the world wide web and, perhaps surprisingly, CompuServe.

How can we use media literacy in the classroom?

"When questioning why I have not seen media literacy used within schools there are many possible reasons as to why this is the case. Arguably a lack of technological knowledge or skill amongst teachers is a key factor, however it is also possible to question do teachers know what media literacy is and have many teachers considered its benefits within the classroom? Détisser la toile 1/2 - France Culture | Educommunication | Scoop.it

Or, l’imprévisibilité fournit une indication historique précieuse.

“Visual Literacy” available online as a chapter excerpted from the book Media Literacy in the K-12 Classroom, by Frank W. Baker, published by the International Society for Technology in Education. The chapter examines the ability of photography and video—notably the first 10 minutes of the animated feature film WALL-E—in conveying meaning without words. The excerpt also provides details about the Mid-Continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) Corporation’s set of “Language Arts Viewing Standards” K-12 education."

Myths of Technology Series: "Technology Will Replace Face-to-Face Interaction"

Myths of Technology Series: "Technology Will Replace Face-to-Face Interaction" | Educommunication | Scoop.it

We have to see that for some students, technology actually can provide them the voice that they have never had before.  I spoke to one student that said the use of social media actually inspired them to start speaking publicly because they developed confidence through a medium that worked for them.  I think of how many students would benefit and feel more comfortable talking in public when they would be allowed to use a medium that works for them first.

Report: "Children are growing up in a convergent media ecology"

"Both childhood and the media environment are changing and co-determining each other (Livingstone, 2009). Children are growing up in a convergent media ecology (Ito et al., 2009), whereby significant opportunities for sociability, self-expression, learning, creativity and participation are provided by online media and increasingly, mobile media (Hjorth & Goggin, 2009; Goggin 2010). However, children may also experience risks on the internet: since 2006, the EU Kids Online network has investigated online opportunities and risks for children, showing their interdependence (Livingstone et al., 2011): the more children use the internet, the wider range of opportunities taken up, the more they are exposed to risky experiences. The changing conditions of internet access by means of mobile media call for new research on children's online experiences, opportunities and risks of the mobile internet."

Interest-based content curation was only a vision 2 years ago when we launched: in a post Web 2.0 world, we felt that more and more we are the content we publish. Whether we liked it or not, we would all need to become media - a problem for busy professionals who don’t have time or inspiration for that and whose primary expertise is often not to be a content publisher.
