From panic to ‘literacy’ | Educommunication | Scoop.it
The debate is an ongoing one: whether the new millennials, who spend, on average, up to eight hours every day engaging with new media, will turn out just as any other generation before them or, as some pundits lament, into the ‘dumbest generation’ of ‘narcissists’ who are unable to keep eye...

Friending vs Following

Friending vs Following | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"With “friending” as on LinkedIn, Facebook you are establishing a fact. You say “we’ve met in the past and want to be formally connected in case of something useful happening in the future”. On LinkedIn, this means the people you connect with can help you in finding a reference, a job, a new employee, etc. On Facebook it means something your friend does may show up in your news feed if relevant and you are ok with them seeing what you share.

But “following” is a very different action. When you follow someone or something, you are effectively saying “I’d like to hear what you have to say tomorrow”. This is powerful. Very different than friending — it means I’m inviting you into my world."

Hey, Kids, Look at Me When We’re Talking

Hey, Kids, Look at Me When We’re Talking | Educommunication | Scoop.it
A few years ago, I was having drinks one night with Clifford Nass, a restlessly creative communication professor at Stanford University who had a reputation for out-of-the box thinking. Dr. Nass told me about research he was doing that suggested young people were spending so much time looking into screens that they were losing the ability to read nonverbal communications and learn other skills necessary for one-on-one interactions.

10 Great Role Models for Boys

10 Great Role Models for Boys | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"

Let's play fill in the blank: "You swing like a g---"; "Boys don't c--"; "Be a m--." If you think it's easy to guess the answers, imagine how boys feel. From chisel-chested action stars to scorched-earth video game heroes to tough-talking TV guys, the media's images, characters, and messages are loud and clear: to be a man, you must be intimidating, stoic, and domineering.

These cultural stereotypes are not only dated, they're not true. And they can limit boys from developing their full potential as sensitive, nurturing, and authentic human beings.

But new role models are emerging, in both traditional and new media. "

79 Theses on Technology. For Disputation.

79 Theses on Technology. For Disputation. | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"Alan Jacobs has written seventy-nine theses on technology for disputation. A disputation is an old technology, a formal technique of debate and argument that took shape in medieval universities in Paris, Bologna, and Oxford in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. In its most general form, a disputation consisted of a thesis, a counter-thesis, and a string of arguments, usually buttressed by citations of Aristotle, Augustine, or the Bible. But disputations were not just formal arguments. They were public performances that trained university students in how to seek and argue for the truth. They made demands on students and masters alike. Truth was hard won; it was to be found in multiple, sometimes conflicting traditions; it required one to give and recognize arguments; and, perhaps above all, it demanded an epistemic humility, an acknowledgment that truth was something sought, not something produced."
